We tried a new format for our RTT reading this year with people choosing a month and setting up a theme for the rest of us to follow.

As everyone seems to want to continue with this format, please choose a month which I will list here:

January: cbl_tn - First Encounters
February: Roro8 - Storico Italia
March: cbfiske - Meeting Madness
April: DeltaQueen - A Family Affair
May: CurrerBell - Oh What a State of Affairs
June: .Monkey. - Fight For Your Rights
July: KatieKrug - Viva La Revolucion
August: Majkia - Art: Making It, Preserving It, Collecting It, Stealing It
September: Countrylife - A Historically Significant Event
October: Tess_schoolmarm - Gothic
November: Familyhistorian - Noir or Darkness
December: cindydavid4 - Twisted Fairy Tales

I had this group on ignore for, well at least a couple years, just because the way you guys did things didn't work with the way I read, so I couldn't really participate (and I view Talk on "all topics"), even though I like the idea of the group. But it was just pointed out to me earlier this month or late last month, that you had done this monthly thing now. I do hope that continues because I'd like to, potentially, join in with it for next year!

If you do continue it, I'd not mind doing a month. :)

I've quite enjoyed the change in format for 2016 and would be happy to go with it again in 2017.

I'm certainly up for re-upping. I use this group extensively in coordination with ROOTing.

I really like the monthly set up also. Let's keep it!

I've taken over the quarterly set up and I'm continuing it as is, but am more than willing to do it differently if folks want that changed too.

I am happy with the monthly organization. I also use this challenge for ROOTing. There's almost always something on my shelves that will fit the monthly theme!

>5 majkia: Oh no, no, no, no, no as to any change in the quarterly set-up. It works perfectly as it is so that we have the variety of time-periods for one of the challenges rather than topics/themes.

I agree with everyone else. I like 2016's monthly format, and the quarterly format is perfect as is.

I think the present format works well and we can always change it another year if we find it isn't working well anymore.

It looks like everyone is happy with our current set up. Now we need volunteers for next year.

I'll edit the first message so that we can easily keep track of who's doing what month.

Just putting in my two cents. I've enjoyed the 2016 monthly and quarterly formats also. Now to choose a month for next year...

I'll volunteer for September.

I would like February please.

I'd like to volunteer for March. Thanks.

I'll put myself down for April.

16CurrerBell
Oct 26, 2016, 4:27 pm

I'll be doing one, but I don't have any special month in mind so I'll just wait and see what isn't taken.

Oct 26, 2016, 5:13 pm

I'll take January if no one else wants it.

I plan to retire in October so I'll have lots of time in November, right? I'll take on November.

>22 Familyhistorian: Thanks, Judy. I still have to get through three more seasons so not really there yet. I am part looking forward to and part dreading retirement but know I can't keep up the pace I am going as I seem to keep adding new things to do.

23DeltaQueen50
Nov 18, 2016, 12:47 pm

Meg, I think you will be amazed at how busy you will be when "retired". I can't believe that I used to fit a full time job into my daily schedule!

24majkia
Nov 18, 2016, 1:17 pm

>22 Familyhistorian: I so concur with DQ. I can be as busy as I want to be since I've retired. Saying NO is a challenge for me, but I'm learning how to say it!

25Familyhistorian
Nov 19, 2016, 1:30 am

>23 DeltaQueen50: That's what I hear, Judy. One of the people at a meeting I was at last night just retired about 6 months ago and he was talking wistfully about taking a trip but he is just too busy! I think I might be ok. I have been taking on commitments as though I was retired for a while now so hope to space things out a bit when I don't have to go into work full time.

26Familyhistorian
Nov 19, 2016, 1:34 am

>24 majkia: I hope that you aren't busier than you want to be. I want to concentrate on writing when I retire so I think the "no" won't be that much of a challenge as I have deadlines to meet.

Hi - new here. What kind of themes do you read about? How are they chosen? thanks

28DeltaQueen50
Editado: Dic 7, 2016, 2:11 pm

>27 cindydavid4: Welcome to Reading Through Time, for the last year we have been taking turns being the host each month and setting a theme for all of us to read. Last year the themes were:

JANUARY 2016: Women In Command
FEBRUARY 2016: Celebrating The Writers
MARCH 2016: Discoveries and Innovations
APRIL 2016: Women And War
MAY 2016: History of Labor, Unions or the Working Class
JUNE 2016: School Days, School Days
JULY 2016: Weather Related Natural Disasters
AUGUST 2016: Journeys
SEPTEMBER 2016: Water, Water Everywhere
OCTOBER 2016: Month of Mystery
NOVEMBER 2016: Presidents, Veeps & Elections
DECEMBER 2016: Choice of Two Eras - Regency or Victorian

Most of our themes are open to interpretation by the members. It's fun to see a theme posted and go off and find a book to read that will fit the theme. We also keep track of the books everyone reads on the Wiki's (the link is on the Group Home Page)

Our January 2017 theme is "First Encounters" so the reader is to pick a book to read that has the first contact between cultures.

If you are not interested in a particular theme, or just can't fit a book into any month there is no problem if you just skip that month.

I hope you join in and perhaps once you are comfortable you will want to host a month yourself.

As well as the monthly themes, Majkia runs the Quarterly Reading Through Time Challenge. Every three months a time period is set and one can read various books set in that time period.

Dic 15, 2016, 5:33 pm

I'll take May since no one else seems to be in a hurry to get at it. I really don't have any particular month that's important to me so I figured I'd wait and let other folks take first shot. This year I really did want June for the "school days" theme, but what I'm planning for 2017 doesn't really have any particular month associated with it.

I am currently wracking my brain for a good theme topic for February.

At last I have had inspiration.

The February theme is up.

I'm not sure why that February thread has such a weird URL, and why I can't find it easily, so for future reference here's the link: http://www.librarything.com/topic/243693#5838957. Never mind the shortened one works. http://www.librarything.com/topic/243693

I'd be happy to take July!

(Is there a list somewhere of themes already done, so I don't end up repeating one?)

>38 katiekrug: Hi Katie, Jean has a thread here https://www.librarything.com/topic/243697 where she has started to fill in the 2017 themes. I kind of jumped the gun for November's theme which hasn't made it to her thread yet. November will be "Noir or Darkness".

Editado: Dic 20, 2016, 10:50 pm

>38 katiekrug: >40 Familyhistorian: And my theme for May is probably going to be, Oh What a State of Affairs! Pick a reading which is particularly representative of one of the fifty states. (In recognition of the fact that some very active members of this group are non-U.S., substitute "country" for "state" if you so prefer.)

ETA: My own state (not the one I live in, but the one I'll be reading on) is Maine. If I can find my copy around the house somewhere, I'll probably read Thoreau's The Maine Woods.

42.Monkey.
Editado: Dic 21, 2016, 5:41 am

And June will be Fight For Your Rights, reading something that deals with a struggle for equality/freedom (which could be things like civil rights in the US or elsewhere (e.g. minorities, LGBTQ), or like people stuck behind the Iron Curtain or under any dictator/totalitarian government, etc).

Thanks for volunteering, Katie. I have added you to the list at the top.

I am loving all these themes that are showing up. Looks like we are going to have a great year of reading ahead of us.

46DeltaQueen50
Dic 30, 2016, 7:26 pm

We have a host for October now as Tess_schoolmarm has volunteered with the theme being "Gothic". We have the month of December left if anyone wants to host.

Thanks - I originally did a project for my Children's Lit class in college where compared fairy tales around the world, and got hooked on the topic. (and yes, I am a fan of Once Upon a Time!) Have a ton of possible reads, but need to find some current research articles to go along with it. When the time comes, do I send you the links of books and articles to post, or do I open the thread and put it in the first post?

54DeltaQueen50
Mar 17, 2017, 9:05 pm

>53 cindydavid4: I am a fan of re-worked fairy tales as well. You set up the thread whenever you are ready including any links you think are needed. The thread can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish, there are no rules. If you have any questions, just ask away.

58cindydavid4
Mar 19, 2017, 5:13 pm

>57 CurrerBell:, that Donoghue is probably my favorite collection. Love how she take one character from the story and weaves her into the next. Some real creative ideas in there! I don't have the Virago Book of Fairy Tales. Once upon a time I had four of Arthur Lanes Fairy Books of Many Colors. I had old copies of the red, blue and green. But my mom cleaned out my room when I went off to college and decided to give them to some kids of a friend of hers. Errrg. Should probably look to buy a set, I suspect they would be easy to get

59cindydavid4
Mar 19, 2017, 5:15 pm

Oh and don't forget The Book of Lost Things. Not written as a collection, but a novel about a boy who enters a fairy land where the tales are changed. Its rather graphic and the ending is rather disturbing, but its well worth reading for the tales that are told.

The Wiki's are fixed and ready for use. The information is there but the format is slightly different. CurrierBell has generously offered to reorangize the format after everyone has put their information in.

I have posted the new links to the wiki's on our main page and I have left the old links there for now in case anyone needs to refer back to them.
