password = ROOTS

Fall is here and we have only three months left to the challenge. We just squeaked by making the monthly goal, so that means we have to work harder to keep up. The cooler temperatures may keep us inside, and that's a perfect reason to cuddle up with a good book.
Throw a log on the fire, sit down in your reading chair, grab your warm blanket and book and READ!

Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2016 and how many books they read by the end of July.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.

I have removed twelve members to a separate list because tthey have yet to read one ROOT. They may have forgotten that they set a goal, or real life may have gotten in the way, but until they start up, we will not let their numbers affect the group goal.

If there is © next to your name, I see a ticker on your thread that is not in the ticker thread. If you could copy the code to the Ticker thread it would be a huge help each month.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.

So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

Finished Present at the Future: From Evolution to Nanotechnology, Candid and Controversial Conversations on Science and Nature by Ira FlatowThis is a book of popular science style essays. All the essays come from guests on the author's radio talk show, NPR's Science Friday. It was amazing how prescient a ten year-old book could be. When it was written some of the essays bordered on prophecy and now some of those things are real. These are light and easy-to-read essays meant for a general audience or an introduction to a topic. They are not in-depth and make no attempt to be. They are enjoyable reading that give the reader a good background and will allow the reader to explore more on their own if they wish to do so.

Sorry, I haven't been around much the last 10 days but I have a good excuse.

Last Monday I had surgery on my knee again to repair some cartilage and scar tissue issues so i've been a bit incapacitated. Then Tim had chest pains Saturday night and I had to call 911 to have him taken to the hospital. Finally got home 4AM minus one husband who was still in ICU and then Tim's brother called 7AM to find out what was going on. Happily, the doctors say there was no heart attack but he's got Doctor appts. this week to try to figure out what's going on. You'd think that waiting rooms would be a great place to catch up on your reading, wish I could say I did.

Hopefully things are settling down.

I have been having trouble updating my tickers as well, torontoc. So I just made a new one.

I am sitting on 12 ROOTs for the month and 87 for the year. I don't know that I will try for more in these next few days or not. I have been letting a lot of 'good reads' slide this year to kick my ROOTs!

I have redone my personal ticker so that is accurate but won't touch the group ticker.

Great job everyone. It's a good year for ROOTing.

Two more short ones down! \o/ Negotiating with the Dead and Art and Fear bring me to 29/30 but I am baffled by the ticker. I have tried all the tricks and it doesn't update. Dang. Anyway, the percentage is wrong, but no worries. The important thing is I have one more to read! I have been neglecting the news ones sadly...they weep on their shelves...yes, plural. Oh my.

Updating the ticker:

Folks who are having trouble with their tickers, I think the problem may be with your browser cache. In order to make pages load faster, most modern browsers "cache" images, that is, they store the images on a page for the next time you come back to the page. You should be able to get the ticker to advance if you clear your cache.

How to do that? I've tried it in both Firefox and Chrome.

==========

Firefox:

In Firefox (version 49.0.2 on Win 8.1) it seems to be sufficient just to refresh the browser page. You do that by going to the address bar for the LibraryThing page on which your ticker appears – then clicking on the circular-loop-arrow icon. That's working for me. Also, you should be able to refresh the page by hitting the F5 function key.

==========

Chrome:

In Chrome (version 54.0.2840.71) it seems that you have to clear the history, which is a little more complicated. In the far upper right corner of the browser window (right below the x for closing) you'll see an icon of three vertically aligned dots. Click that icon, then mouse over History, then click again on History when it appears in the drop-down menu. (Alternatively, using the keyboard, you can just hit Control-H.) This will open a "History" page in a new browser tab.

On that "History" page, click the button that says Clear browsing data... and you'll get a pop-up. Check all of the boxes and then set the drop-down for Obliterate the following items from: to read the past hour. Don't erase anything beyond the past hour or you might lose browsing history (passwords, that kind of thing) that you want to keep.

You'll probably have to refresh the browser window for the LibraryThing thread to which your ticker is posted. It might also help if you close that window altogether before you clear the browsing data.

==========

As you can see, Chrome's a little trickier than Firefox. (I haven't bothered trying IE, which I never use.) The whole idea, though, is to clear the browser cache for the LibraryThing page to which you've got the ticker posted. This should do the trick – at least it works for me.

Folks, can someone of a techie bent play around like I have and verify that I haven't said something stoopid? It's a tricky set of directions, and I may have some typo that confuses everything, but I think my directions are correct as written.

The problem isn't with the ticker itself. The problem is with the browser, that's caching images such as the ticker. You need to get that image cleared out of your browser cache.

Good luck
Mike

>114 CurrerBell: Mostly you don't have to check all the boxes, just the one that says "cached images and files" on Chrome. But lots of times if I wait an hour or two and then recheck things have updated. I think you
re right that it's a browser issue. I clear history and cache about once a week just to keep my browser ticking happily. I use a mac, so if you are pc...that is to say, if you USE a pc it may be different.

I think it's a bit easier to use the menu bar for Chrome: drop down history, then way at the bottom choose "full history" then "Clear browsing data" then check what you want to clear...you don't have to clear all the things, usually just cache and maybe "hosted app data"...not sure about that one.

Hello everyone! Alright, so October was slightly better than I thought it would be. I knew that I would probably do much better than September's dismal reading total and I have to admit that I certainly did. I only read two less ROOTs this month than last October, which actually wasn't that bad!

Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for October:

Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 0

Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 1
