It's not fantasy but I'm enjoying checking out The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

>7 SF_fan_mae: The Collegium Chronicles is the only part of the Valdemar series that I haven't read. What do you think so far?

Last year I took the opportunity to re-read the whole series in order, from Gryphons to Owls; I had previously read it in pieces over the years, and I had a great time being submerged in the entire story. (I still tear up a little whenever someone gets Chosen).

I've started reading Shadowmarch by Tad Williams, it gets off to a good traditional fantasy start. You can see the bones of the original television intent.

Managed to finish both the fantasies I was reading: Arcanum by Simon Morden and The Free by Brian Ruckley. The former was mostly OK, but I really enjoyed the latter.

Next up is Uprooted by Naomi Novik.

Just finished the The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin. I picked it up since it won the Hugo but I didn't realize it was the first book in a series.

Currently digging into an OOP "lost treasure" with The Sword of Winter. I'm really loving it, and I'm in a bit of mourning over the fact that this author doesn't have any other fantasy on her bibliography. The protagonist in this is so great... It's already killing me that, once I finish this book, there's nothing else out there to continue her story.

I just flew through the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb - someone suggested Assassin's Apprentice and I had to finish the trilogy. It wraps up really well at the end. A few threads are left, enough to lead into the next trilogy, but the loose ends are tied up satisfactorily.

I would recommend these books to anyone who likes medieval fantasy. The characters are really interesting and I will miss them now that it's done.

>19 Darth-Heather:, liked the first two books, but the third not so much; Fitz goes passive and a bit dense, and the ending felt very rushed to me.

I prefer the next trilogy, Liveship Traders; haven't read past that so far.

Heh, Darth-Heather... imagine getting to that ending and not knowing that there would be two other trilogies of Fitz's future adventures. Those loose ends were reason for a LOT of angst for me at one time. :)

Me: Currently in some kingdom with very complicated naming conventions that I'm not even making an effort to parse - just letting my eyes glide right past them - in The Goblin Emperor.

I'm currently reading Warriors 1 which has some science fiction, historical fiction, and fantasy in this catch-all first volume of this anthology.

>25 Cecrow: I just finished the Silverberg entry, I really liked it. Honestly, I only got this volume five years ago for one story in particular (The Mystery Knight by Martin) and this is the first time I'm reading all the other stories as well. So far, only the Haldeman story that kicks off this volume is the only one that hasn't impressed me--it was just alright.

Finished uprooted by Naomi Novik. Loved it. Fairy tale at its best.

Next up is The City Stained Red by Sam Sykes.

>10 Darth-Heather:
I enjoyed the Collegium Chronicles, especially the first and last books. It probably would have been fine as a trilogy, stretching it to 5 books felt very padded, especially all the Kirball games, since the supposedly famous game had never shown up in any books that took place later. I've reread favorite parts over the years, but it would be a fun series to go back and read in order.
