AUGUST ROOT - Progress Thread

Another month has passed and we are still doing great as a group! Sometimes in the summer we start to fall behind our goal, but we are still ahead and the end of summer is upon us. There's still time to get some of those ROOTS read at the beach or while you are still "enjoying" the warm weather.

Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2016 and how many books they read by the end of July.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.

I have removed twelve members to a separate list because tthey have yet to read one ROOT. They may have forgotten that they set a goal, or real life may have gotten in the way, but until they start up, we will not let their numbers affect the group goal.

If there is © next to your name, I see a ticker on your thread that is not in the ticker thread. If you could copy the code to the Ticker thread it would be a huge help each month.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.

I am quick off the mark for August with my first ROOT finished yesterday -- The Prince, by Niccolò Machiavelli (Oxford World's Classics edition, translated by Peter Bondanella and Mark Musa).

Oh, NO! I lost a star!!!

I'll do better, now that I'm not taking off for two weeks to see my grandbaby.

My first book of August is also a ROOT: Appaloosa by Robert Parker. It's the first-time I've read anything by this author, and it's pretty good. I just wish some authors didn't feel the need to use curse words so much.

And yes, I *do* appreciate all you do with the ROOT group, Cheli. This bunch have helped me so much the last few years, getting those older books either read, or removed, or sometimes both.

Still ahead of where I need to be, but my chunkster in July slowed me down and I still haven't finished it.

Just finished #29 Crime and Punishment which was everything I expected and hoped for: Incredibly satisfying.

On a ROOT roll here: 11 so far this month!

I have read two ROOTs, but cleaned out the bookshelves in the spare bedroom, removing 9 more books I have had for over a decade and probably will never read.

I hope that atones for my very poor showing last month...

I have a question- how do you guys motivate yourselves? I have hit a wall and can't seem to be able to get around it no matter how I try. It's frustrating, looking at the pile of TBRs and knowing that it isn't going down any time soon. Any advice or words of encouragement are welcome.

Be selfish- read what interests you right now- not because you feel compelled to read for a specific challenge.

>16 enemyanniemae: I'm counting ALL my own books - also the new ones I buy. My first year in the challenge I did it differently - a ROOT had to be on the shelves for at least a year - but it was demotivating so I changed it. Mixing it up keeps me more interested in the old ones, when I read them.

Just have fun looking for a new ROOT in my TBR pile. It should not be a burden, but you have to make it interesting and FUN! And >17 torontoc: is right, be selfish. If you want to read something else that's okay. Maybe you can get your motivation back that way.

>16 enemyanniemae: I count all books I own, as well, and I even count rereads (they too are part of my library). That gives me broad parameters. I also commute by bus, so I read ROOTS on the commute and library books at home. This helps me feel like I'm making progress on both fronts.

All books I own are my own tomes, so there :) I just don't count borrowed or library books. I think you should feel free to widen your parameters a bit if you feel cramped.

One other thing I do: If I really don't know what to read anymore and I'm just standing there staring at my books, I sometimes pick a book at random and simply read that. It helps me to get through slumps if I can't choose or feel like no book is right at that moment. Simply starting something, anything, helps to get going...

I'm having a very good month so far, with 6 ROOTs finished already :)

Second for the month, Susanna Moodie, Roughing It in the Bush, 48/75.

>16 enemyanniemae: I only count books I have owned for over a year (and only count rereads if the format is new - generally audiobook editions of books I had previously read in print). But I set my goal low so that I would have time to read newer books & library books as well.

In terms of motivation, I try at the beginning of the month to look through my ROOTs to see if I have any that will work for the month's challenges (over in 2016 Category Challenge group) and can generally find several to choose from. That helps motivate me to read those instead of getting books from the library to some extent (I still struggle with my library addiction though!).

I also find it helps to ignore the size of my TBR or backlog and focus on what progress I have made. I don't think that I will ever get my TBR under control so if I think about it too much it can become paralyzing. Just be happy with each book that you can claim (even if it doesn't make a dent in the total you "have to" get to).

One other thing I do to help is occasionally I will get from the library or LibriVox an audiobook edition of a book I own in print or on my Kindle - I have more time for listening to audiobooks these days than for sitting down and reading. I then count that print or ebook as done (even though I actually used a different format).

I have finished two more Kindle ROOTs - my thread and personal ticker updated but I didn't adjust the group tickers.

ETA: Like you, I tie ROOTing in with challenges ... Reading Through Time and (for this month) All Virago/All August. And now, back to rereading A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, which I haven't read in over forty years and which will count to the RTT Arthurian theme for the third quarter of this year. (But it won't count as a ROOT because I'm reading it in the Library of America edition of Twain's historical novels, so I'll be rereading Joan of Arc for the fourth RTT quarter, Medieval, and The Prince and the Pauper for RTT-Renaissance in the first quarter of next year, at which time it will satisfy a ROOT for the entire LoA volume.)

Finished my second ROOT for August: Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe. Updated both personal and group tickers.

My count says that I have read 43. That would NOT get me to my goal, but I will make it this month. I have several titles I am about to finish that will get me to my goal.

When I am really struggling with motivation to read a weighty ROOT I sometimes set up a rule to read a chapter of the ROOT and then read a chapter of another book that is pure pleasure. I usually find that once I start the ROOT I get sucked in and no longer need the strategy. When this does not occur and it is continually a struggle I reconsider whether the ROOT is worth finishing as there are so many other worthy reads in this wide world. Best of luck with getting over the hump.

#36 for the year, first of the month, Books of Bale by John Arden. This one took me quite a while, but was well worth it.

I went through my TBRs one by one the last time I had a slump and thought about why I didn't want to read it. Quite often it was because it was a mistake buy, I would probably never really want to read it so I got rid of it. I also boxed up a few that I didn't want to read at the time but didn't want them staring at me when I went to the bookcase so I boxed them up and put them in the closet. I made a deal with myself that I would look at them again at the end of this year (it was mid 2015 when I put them out of sight).

I know its hard to get rid of unread books but sometimes it's the best thing to do. Remember, we read for pleasure and shouldn't let our TBRs become a burden.

I read multiple books at a time. I have the books in different locations, that way I am not schlepping some sort of electronic device around with me all the time. I find them unhandy and unwieldy. Books can be as well, but they come in various sizes so I can fit them in a bag or leave one in the car. Paper - a technology that always works. Unless you take a paperback to the swimming pool.

The stickers were out of sync - the first one had 2636 and the second one 2635. I've updated both to 2637. I hope I didn't mess that up.

#30 is done: The Call of the Wild by Jack London. Fast and thrilling read!

>16 enemyanniemae: I think that we have all reached a point where we want all the shiny new books and leave those old books behind. For me, I just think, that the reason why those books have been on my shelf is because at one time I really wanted to read it so there must be something special about it that made me get it in the first place, so I try to re-read the reviews here and most of the time that reminds me why I wanted to read it in the first place. Fortunately, for me, the majority of the 600+ ROOTs that I have, I really want to read - I just can't find the time, and then new books keep tempting me. I do count advanced review copies in my ROOT challenge so that some of those shiny new books are included. But even then, I have ARCs that are still sitting on the shelf. (July was my worst reading month since I joined LT in 2008 - but I'm not giving up - I love to read too much!)

One thing - please don't stress out about reading ROOTs or not reading ROOTs - reading is supposed to be fun and enjoyable - just do it!

>52 cyderry: What I've really enjoyed about this year is creating a "pool" of possible ROOT reads based on group reads and challenges over at the Category Challenge. It's made the task of choosing my next ROOT a lot easier, and some of the books in that pool have been around for a while, so it is very satisfying to cross them off the list. I don't read from the pool exclusively, but it has been a useful tool for me.

Completed my second ROOT for August, The Christie Curse by Victoria Abbott. This is the first in the Book Collector Mystery series. This mystery revolves around a maybe missing, maybe nonexistent, play by Agatha Christie.

>52 cyderry: For some strange reason, it's the non-fiction books that turn out to be five-star reads for me, like Latein ist tot, es lebe Latein!, about the Latin language. I also enjoyed Sansibar oder der letzte Grund, a book that had been on the curriculum for German class in my time, but which we didn't read back then. Most of the others were pretty much what I expected, which is not a bad thing.

I finished the last few roots by sorting my TBR alphabetically by author, and have kept reading this way for the most part since I reached my goal. Such treasures in my As--most recently some long neglected Kate Atkinsons that I bought years ago at a library sale. I also braved John Arden, who really intimidated me, and found him tough, but really rewarding. The wonderful Brick Lane was a real treat lurking up there on the top shelf. I'm launching into my Bs with Isaac Babel's stories.

#38 Emotionally Weird by Kate Atkinson. Loved this. I'm sad that I've finished all but one of her books now.

>52 cyderry: In ROOTing terms the best book has been SAK by Joakim Garff, which is a biography on Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. It was a 700-page intimidating volume which had sat on my shelves for 13 solid years. As expected it turned out to be a good read, but the book and the subject was a bit intimidating, so good to have it out the way.

My best reads this year have been newly bought books: War's unwomanly face by Svetlana Aleksijevitj and Crime and Punishent by Dostojevskij.

After a poor showing in July, I am making up for it in August! Just finished another ROOT - my thread and ticker are updated but group tickers were not.

I am deeply involved with a chunkster from off of my shelves - Americanah. I like it but at close to 500 pages it is taking me some time to read.

Just finished my first ROOT for August, #24 for the year.

Finished reading my 50th ROOT for the year. DONE!! The book was Rocket Boys and quite good. It also counted in the Dewey challenge which helped move it into sight to be read in August.

Ticker updated, but now I need to really read more of those lovely ABC TBRs that have been languishing on my shelves.

#39 Collected Stories of Isaac Babel. Pearl-ruled this one.

Marion Garthwaite's Coarse Gold Gulch (4****), 49/75. A middle-reader novel, so I finished it in a day. I need some of these quick reads to make up for some of the doorstoppers I've recently done or I'm going to fall behind goal. This one fits in also with the Reading Through Time group's August theme of "Journeys."

Alas, Poor Lady by Rachel Ferguson, best known for The Brontës Went to Woolworths, which I think I'm going to go on to for a reread next. Alas, Poor Lady is "darker" than TBWtW, but in fact TBWtW probably also has a dark underside that you don't detect on a first reading. As a Persephone, Alas, Poor Lady also satisfies some reading for All Virago/All August (which also includes Persephone), and my reread of TBWtW will also be one for AV/AA.

5th for August, 51/75

Honoured Enemy my first for more than a month, finally got over my case of library-itis. Unfortunately it is a chronic recurring condition so I suspect I will be struck down again soon.

I haven't done much reading this month - but the month isn't over yet.

Murder in LaMut finished the Legends of the Riftwar trilogy. Not my favourite novel as the murder mystery component was sort of middling.

After two full months of not reading I finally read another manga before it became three full months. I don't feel guilty at all for not reading as I have been fully enjoying my summer but it does feel good to have a manga off the TBR pile!

What did you think of The Gospel of Loki? I saw that in a bookshop and nearly bought it.

Rose Macaulay's Told by an Idiot (3*** review), which also satisfies All Virago/All August.

It's not a drastic reimagining; the setting is the same, and it follows the regular Norse-myth trajectory from Ymir to Ragnarok, but told from the POV of Loki rather than by an omniscient third person.

Just did this with A Whole Life, which I'm currently reading as a root. Not my usual alphabetical order, and not an old root, but I just couldn't resist. My wish list at the library is as big, if not bigger, than my TBR at home.

I still have not managed to finish reading a YA novel of 174 pages. I am just too tired at night to read. Maybe this weekend I can finish it.

I did manage to hit my goal of 45 ROOTS for this year last week.

I feel like I have been lagging behind in my ROOTs reading. Two for the month so far. I hope to finish a few more before the end of the month but don't think that will be enough to earn back my second star.

Roots 41 and 42, A Whole Life and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Quite the opposite from each other in terms of style, both short. A Whole Life gets 5 stars.

ROOT 27 I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings completing. Wonderful and wrenching memoir.

I finished my #50 ROOT (so met goal) and whilst looking at the group thread, realized that the ticker will actually keep going past the goal. So, likely no more ROOTs for August, but back in September with more of mine.

I finished my fourth ROOT for August - Becoming Jane Eyre: A Novel by Sheila Kohler - last night.

I've finished what will probably be my last ROOT for August: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. Ticker updated. Just four more in as many months for my goal this year!

Just a pop in, the relatives finally left last Monday,then I had to get ready to fly out Wednesday for a visit with my sister in Maine. Tututhefirst and I are having a great time catching up, talking books reading a little, and playing games. Returning home on Wednesday the 31st.

Just edited my personal and the group ticker for a ROOT I finished awhile ago. I'm going to make a point of choosing a ROOT for my next book - I've only got 3 left but I've been very distracted by the new and shiny lately!

I have given up updating the group tickers but have been keeping my thread and personal ticker updated. It has been an excellent month for reading ROOTs for me -- I have knocked off 12!!

Finished my third ROOT for August, for a total of 26/40. All tickers updated.

So much for me hoping to have a book finished by the end of the month. I think my paltry 2 for August is going to be all. However, in my defence I have made really good progress on my current chunkster and should finish it reasonably early on in September. Hopefully I'll have a few short ones in September to increase my totals, as I bought rather more books in August than I should have! (whoops)

I finished eight books in August, have reached and surpassed my goal and am very pleased with my progress. There won't be quite so much ROOTing next month, as I plan a short vacation. My own ticker is updated.

Third book for August finished, updated all tickers.

I'm leaving town for a few days and won't finish any more ROOTS for this month. I read 3 for 24/30.

Roots 43 and 44 completed. The Children at Green Knowe Collection contains The Children at Green Knowe and The River at Green Knowe, but I'm counting it as one, as they were purchased as a single e-copy. I also just finished The Women in Black by Madeleine St. John. All 3 were short and really fun.

I read three ROOTs this month for a total of 27 completed out of a goal of 36.

I managed to finish another short one that I was part way through. Young Adolf is my 45th root this year, and my 11th for August.

I thought I might be able to squeeze another ROOT in, but it doesn't look like it's going to be possible, so here is my report for August 2016

Hello everyone! So, I must admit that I have been rereading one ROOT that I already read back in March. (I don't want to throw any totals out of whack, so I'm trying to figure out how to handle this particular reread.) I hope to finish it by the end of the month, but I don't know if I will. I haven't been feeling well for the past week and a half, so I've been pampering myself a little bit.

Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for August:

I finished my last ROOT of August which brought my annual total to 67. I have updated my personal ticker but did not touch the group one.

Back from my trip and I managed to read enough ROOTs to keep my star but I will be settling in with a bunch in September., Glad everyone is doing so well.

>150 rabbitprincess: I had a fabulous time - Tina and I just spent lazy days talking and reading and playing games - we did take one day to go shopping - we went to a local winery that made the most delicious blueberry dessert wine (can't wait until that arrives), the local farm that raises alpacas and from the wool they make the cutest stuffed animals (bought two of those for grandchildren) and finished off the day getting ice cream at the local dairy - yummy!

I love that series by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo. I need to read the rest of that series.
