password = ROOTS
We're still doing great! We are 100+ over the monthly goal - great job everyone!

Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2016 and how many books they read by the end of May
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.

At the end of June, I will review the totals and any individuals that have not recorded a ROOT will be removed from the main list and the totals adjusted. If you're serious, get at least one ROOT read by the end of June to stay in the main group.
If there is © next to your name, I see a ticker on your thread that is not in the ticker thread. If you could copy the code to the Ticker thread it would be a huge help each month.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.

So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

ROOT #2 is done, Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman

What a delightful story, of a graduate in her first position, teaching English in an inner city high school. Miss Barrett is overwhelmed by the bureaucracy, the apathy, but tells us of her experiences through notes, office pronouncements, and letters to a good friend. There are situations that should make the reader angry, even tearful, but the author infuses this tale with enough humor to bring a smile to the face. Nicely done.

My second book for the month. Updating tickers. This group is continuing to make great progress.

27CurrerBell
Editado: Jun 11, 2016, 1:41pm

Three so far for the month:

June 3 ... Fannie Elizabeth Ratchford, The Brontës' Web of Childhood (5*****)
June 7 ... Nancy Spain, Poison for Teacher (3***)
June 8 ... Henry Handel Richardson, The Getting of Wisdom (4****)

I'm doing a good bit of School Days School Days reading for this month on the RTT theme, which is my own. Next up will be Colette's The Complete Claudine in Antonia White's four-in-one translation, which will include Claudine à l'école, but the entire volume's an omnibus 640 doorstopper which will also satisfy the 2016 - BIG FAT BOOK CHALLENGE.

ETA: 40/75

Listened to two books from my stack of unread novels. First one was Smiley's People and found it interesting but nowhere as good as Honorable Schoolboy or some of the Len Deighton books. Then, on a long road trip I listened to Brisingr. The short review - 25 hours of pure bloat with no editing. The excitement of the last quarter of the book can't make up for the three quarters of boredom the reader endures. But - it was a excellent recording. The narrator is outstanding.

My fourth for the month, The Moth Diaries (4****) by Rachel Klein. "Vampirism" in a girls' boarding school in the Viet Nam era, but not a Vampire Academy type of urban fantasy. It's a psychological study that's been compared to The Turn of the Screw for its unreliable narrator-diarist.

Fits in with the School Days School Days June theme of the Reading Through Time Group. This month I'm heavily devoting to "school days" reading since the theme was my choice.

>73 benitastrnad: It seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it. I thought it was awfully contrived.

ETA: But it was about school, so it fit into the June "School Days School Days" theme of the Reading Through Time group — and since I picked that theme, I'm trying to do as much ROOTing as possible on "school" stories this month.

And I just went out and bought the newly published Once Was a Time, which an RTT member had read as an Early Review and which also fits the "school" theme, so that's one more book I've reading that won't satisfy my ROOTs quota. But it's a quickie middle-grade reader.

I'm currently reading ROOT number 7, but I am not sure if I can finish it before midnight. My ticker is up-to-date.

I won't finish any ROOT by midnight, so my total remains the same.

I read only eight books this month, way below my average, but 6 of them were ROOTs!

I'm almost finished with Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein so I'm adding it to my June totals. That gives me 18 complete against the goal of 30. Tickers updated.

Now that it's nearing the end of June.. I have re-evaluated and decided my new goal was too much of an increase for me over last year.. I'm modifying.
I had previously set a goal of 12 chunksters, in addition to 24 "regular" roots and another 24 non-ROOTs...
That has proven simply not feasible with my current lifestyle... SO my modified goal, looking at what I have going on in the rest of the year, is as follows:
30 ROOTs for the year (this is still an increase of 6 ROOTs over last year), and I am STILL going to try to read 12 chunksters, but that is part of the total goal and will be my own personal goal instead. I have changed the ticker in the ticker thread already to track ALL ROOTs (Rather than just the chunksters).
And for that goal, I am doing well so far (but July-Dec will be busy...). :)

I've managed to sneak one more under the wire, have updated all tickers (mine and group).

>75 CurrerBell: Glad you liked Once was a Time. I enjoyed it but unfortunately it wasn't a ROOT for me either.

Finally, one more ROOT for June. Only 2 ROOTs for this month. I am really slowing down - I think it is all those library books to keep up with the challenges and research.

I was hoping to finish a 6th for June but it was not to be. Right sided heart catheterization and books do not mix.

Got 5 anyway! Updating my personal ticker (no pun intended) but I'll leave the group ticker to the professionals.

I ended up with 10 ROOTs for June! Although none of them were novels.

>96 enemyanniemae: Ooooh, take it easy. I had a stent put in just about five years ago after a near-fatal heart attack at the very end of May 2011. As I write this, I'm sitting at my computer puffing on a nebulizer, which I only used as needed but I've been awfully short of breath these past few days even after only very short activity so I've started using it four times daily until I feel better.

Hope you feel better soon.

Well, I guess we were all so busy reading ROOTs that we didn't chat much so here is the new thread for July.

Hello everyone! So, I wasn't expecting that my June would be quite this slow - three less ROOTs read than last June; but still not quite as bad as I thought. I also started reading Charming Billy: A Novel by Alice McDermott late on Monday night, June 27th! I was so hoping to finish this book by the end of the month, but no such luck, I suppose! Oh well!

Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for June:

Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 3
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 1
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 3
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 28
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 7

I finished 7 books this month, thanks to lots of travel time in the car. That was before my CD player decided to go kaput. Now I will have to listen to the books in the house - until I get the CD player up and running.

I did not update any tickers.

I finished 3 books as sound recordings.
1.Smiley's People
2. Brisingr
3. Shadow and Bone

I had four books that I read. I finished these 3. Serpent's Tooth, Tomatoland, and I finally managed to get to one of the longest held titles in my collection - Floor of the Sky. I could not finish Allegiant and quit after about 150 pages. I figured that it went off my reading list so that makes it count as a ROOT.
