password = ROOTS
We're still doing great! We are 100+ over the monthly goal - great job everyone!

Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2016 and how many books they read by the end of May
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.

At the end of June, I will review the totals and any individuals that have not recorded a ROOT will be removed from the main list and the totals adjusted. If you're serious, get at least one ROOT read by the end of June to stay in the main group.
If there is © next to your name, I see a ticker on your thread that is not in the ticker thread. If you could copy the code to the Ticker thread it would be a huge help each month.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.

So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

Don't be swept away by the warmer weather and sunny skies! Work on your tan and read a book at the same time! We still need to read those ROOTs!

The goal for June is 2,175 We can do this!

Jun 1, 2016, 8:54pm

Congrats to everyone who has reached their goal! We are doing really well this year!

Jun 1, 2016, 9:00pm

#20 finished- review on my thread and tickers updated.

Jun 1, 2016, 9:36pm

Thank you for all your hard work, Cheli.

Now, am I far enough ahead to risk a chunkster or two?

Jun 1, 2016, 9:56pm

Thank you Cheli!

Jun 1, 2016, 10:07pm

Whoop whoop! Go us! I am aiming to finish my first ROOT for June in the next day or two. :)

Jun 2, 2016, 4:28am

Oh, it's great to see we're doing better than last year! I'm off for a short holiday and don't know yet what that will do to my ROOTing, but I think I'm safely ahead of the game.

Jun 2, 2016, 7:20am

Root 31 and my first for June finished, Dona Flor and her Two Husbands. A real treat.

Jun 2, 2016, 10:51am

June 2nd, five months in to 2016 and I'm at 51%, woo!!!

First ROOT for June is complete, too. :)

Jun 2, 2016, 4:35pm

Congrats to those who achieved their goals!

And I have a star! :)

Jun 2, 2016, 8:01pm

Jun 3, 2016, 8:29am

I've added my first ROOT for June and updated all tickers (mine and group).

Jun 3, 2016, 10:21am

Yay Congrats to all those who met their goals so early!
And yay to the group as a whole for doing SO WELL this year!!

& Thanks as always, Chèli, for all your hard work!

Jun 3, 2016, 12:16pm

I've just finished book 6 in the Outlander series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, my first of June and 17th of the year.

Jun 4, 2016, 4:43pm

Just finished my first ROOT for June, #17 for the year. All tickers updated.

Editado: Jun 5, 2016, 3:53pm

Good, I got two stars! Me so happy ;-))

And finished 2 more today # 2 for June and #22 for the year. Group tickers are updated.

Jun 5, 2016, 5:23pm

I also have 2 lovely bright shinning stars and have finished my first for June, My House In Umbria by William Trevor.

Jun 5, 2016, 10:58pm

I finished my next root on the 1st of the month. Pleased with that. tickers updated.

Jun 6, 2016, 12:24am

I am traveling again and so should knock out a few more titles than planned during the month.

Jun 6, 2016, 10:07am

Working on ROOT #2 for June: Up the Down Staircase. So far, it's a hoot!

Editado: Jun 7, 2016, 7:28pm

ROOT #1 completed for June. The Age of Innocence, right in my wheelhouse as it is a tale of the conflict between romance and the manners of the time in New York. Updated both tickers.

Jun 8, 2016, 7:53pm

I have read 5 manga ROOTs so far this month and have added them to the counter bringing us to 1999! Only one more book and then we'll be in the 2000 bracket!

Jun 8, 2016, 9:12pm

Wooo! 2,000 ROOTs congratulations to us. Second ROOT for June The Time Traveler's Wife group tickers updated.

Jun 8, 2016, 9:41pm

I have finished my first ROOT of the month with Elmer Gantry. My thread and all tickers have been updated.

Jun 9, 2016, 8:35am

ROOT #2 is done, Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman

What a delightful story, of a graduate in her first position, teaching English in an inner city high school. Miss Barrett is overwhelmed by the bureaucracy, the apathy, but tells us of her experiences through notes, office pronouncements, and letters to a good friend. There are situations that should make the reader angry, even tearful, but the author infuses this tale with enough humor to bring a smile to the face. Nicely done.

Jun 9, 2016, 11:51pm

My second book for the month. Updating tickers. This group is continuing to make great progress.

Editado: Jun 11, 2016, 1:41pm

Three so far for the month:

June 3 ... Fannie Elizabeth Ratchford, The Brontës' Web of Childhood (5*****)
June 7 ... Nancy Spain, Poison for Teacher (3***)
June 8 ... Henry Handel Richardson, The Getting of Wisdom (4****)

I'm doing a good bit of School Days School Days reading for this month on the RTT theme, which is my own. Next up will be Colette's The Complete Claudine in Antonia White's four-in-one translation, which will include Claudine à l'école, but the entire volume's an omnibus 640 doorstopper which will also satisfy the 2016 - BIG FAT BOOK CHALLENGE.

ETA: 40/75

Editado: Jun 11, 2016, 9:48pm

Listened to two books from my stack of unread novels. First one was Smiley's People and found it interesting but nowhere as good as Honorable Schoolboy or some of the Len Deighton books. Then, on a long road trip I listened to Brisingr. The short review - 25 hours of pure bloat with no editing. The excitement of the last quarter of the book can't make up for the three quarters of boredom the reader endures. But - it was a excellent recording. The narrator is outstanding.

Editado: Jun 12, 2016, 11:36pm

One more ROOT for me. I updated the tickers.

Jun 13, 2016, 4:07am

One more, taking me to half way 24/48. Tickers updated

Jun 13, 2016, 8:11am

I am not making much progress with my ROOTs this month - have just finished my second one and now I have a stack of library books awaiting. Good thing that I set my goal low! My thread and all tickers have been updated.

Jun 13, 2016, 10:21am

I am at 6 comics for the month so far, reading one 320 page comic every two days, which is good because now that the Euro Cup is on I won't be reading as much.

Jun 16, 2016, 10:03am

#21 read- tickers updated and the review is on my thread

Jun 16, 2016, 2:41pm

Just finished my first ROOT for June, that puts me at 18 for the year. All tickers updated.

Jun 16, 2016, 11:50pm

Seem very quiet here for halfway through the month. Guess everyone is reading.

Jun 16, 2016, 11:58pm

Finished my second ROOT for June Les Misérables, a long time coming but overall an enjoyable read. Group tickers updated.

Jun 18, 2016, 10:04am

>35 cyderry: My reason for quiet is that I somehow ended up with a large stack of library books this month... The library is the single biggest obstacle to my attempts to ROOT!

Jun 18, 2016, 1:48pm

>35 cyderry: My reason for quiet is that I'm now reading a kind of a chunkster and some new and shiny ones.

Jun 18, 2016, 1:54pm

>35 cyderry: I'm still going with a couple which I'm hopeful I'll get done by the end of the month. I already have the next one (a new book) lined up - luckily I'm counting new books as ROOTs too!

Jun 18, 2016, 1:55pm

I've managed to read three ROOTS this month so far but haven't yet updated the group ticker. Also have two ROOTS on the go.

Jun 18, 2016, 3:35pm

I was away for a short holiday and didn't get much reading done, and the first one was a chunkster. Getting back into the reading groove, though.

Jun 18, 2016, 4:06pm

Finished off one short ROOT yesterday, that means I only need one more for this month to hit the halfway mark. All tickers updated.

Jun 19, 2016, 12:36am

I can add another root for the month. This one I failed to complete as I was bored to tears. I've decided it might be a useful trade in at a second hand store though as 99% of my books I keep. I will update tickers.

Jun 19, 2016, 9:13am

>43 HelenBaker: that qualifies!

I've been busy with work, and planning a trip to see our first grandchild, so my numbers are down, but I will keep plugging along. I started Brumby, the Wild White Stallion yesterday, and am about 50 pages in.

Jun 19, 2016, 9:49am

>44 fuzzi: Congratulations on your first grandchild! :)

Jun 19, 2016, 9:51am

I managed to finish a Whispersync pair (Kindle & audiobook) -- too bad it counts as one :D! All tickers and my thread have been updated.

Jun 19, 2016, 2:29pm

>44 fuzzi: thank you! We are very excited about her, and going to see her in Chicago. In case you're interested, there's a current photo of Ruthie in my gallery, and also in my gardening thread, I believe.

Jun 19, 2016, 3:34pm

>47 fuzzi: What a cutie! :)

Jun 19, 2016, 4:04pm

>44 fuzzi: Ohh my. I know just what you mean. You simply have to fall in love with those little ones. Congrats, Fuzzi!

ROOT # 23 for the year, # 3 for June

Updating all tickers!

Jun 19, 2016, 9:02pm

>48 rabbitprincess: >49 connie53: thank you so much. We're less than three weeks away from the visit...19 days until I can cuddle her.

Oh, and I read a ROOT today! Personal ticker updated.

Jun 19, 2016, 9:12pm

>50 fuzzi: Wow, congrats! Bet you will take lots of great pics of her when you are there!

I had computer issues - needed a new (actually 2 new) mouses (mice?). Now I am zipping around the threads. I posted my first ROOT for June.

Jun 19, 2016, 9:26pm

Woo! Glad you got the mice , and read a ROOT!

Jun 20, 2016, 2:57am

My fourth for the month, The Moth Diaries (4****) by Rachel Klein. "Vampirism" in a girls' boarding school in the Viet Nam era, but not a Vampire Academy type of urban fantasy. It's a psychological study that's been compared to The Turn of the Screw for its unreliable narrator-diarist.

Fits in with the School Days School Days June theme of the Reading Through Time Group. This month I'm heavily devoting to "school days" reading since the theme was my choice.

Jun 21, 2016, 1:57pm

I've added one more ROOT (my 2nd for June, 18th overall for the year), and updated both my own and the two group tickers.

Jun 21, 2016, 3:16pm

Finally got another ROOT done - a 700 page biography on philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, which required digging deep. A satisfying read, though.

Jun 21, 2016, 10:07pm

So far my June total of ROOTS is no where near a impressive as May. It is simply because my mileage for the month has not been as impressive as May. Less miles in the car means less quality time with recorded books.

Jun 23, 2016, 1:22am

Fifth for the month, Phillis Garrard's Hilda at School, 42/75

Jun 23, 2016, 10:56pm

Just finished another ROOT, for a total of 40 this year so far! Woo!!

Jun 24, 2016, 7:26am

I finished An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon yesterday, my 17th ROOT. Unfortunately, the 8th book won't count as a ROOT since I bought it two days ago.

Jun 24, 2016, 4:37pm

I've finished #14 for my 2016 ROOT... probably my last for this month; I've got another HFB (huge fruiting book) coming up. Ticker and thread updated.

Jun 24, 2016, 7:06pm

Another ROOT done -- thread and all tickers updated. I see that we are again likely to meet our monthly goal! We are doing so well this year :-)

Jun 25, 2016, 8:56am

ROOT # 24 for the year, # 4 for June

Peter James - Als de dood

Going to update the tickers now!

Jun 25, 2016, 9:11am

Added 1 for June

Jun 25, 2016, 12:17pm

I've added one more ROOT to both my own and the group tickers. Hoping I can squeeze one more in before the end of June.

Jun 26, 2016, 3:12pm

Finished another ROOT: Camelot 3000 by Mike Barr and Brian Boland. Enjoyable reinterpretation of the Camelot myth, which I enjoyed a lot. Various tickers updated!

Jun 26, 2016, 3:51pm

Finished ROOT # 25 and 5 for June

De droomtuin by Rachel Hore

Updating all tickers.

Jun 27, 2016, 11:13pm

I'm running behind on my reading plan for June, I went through one of those periods where nothing I planned suited me at the time to begin another book. So this is only my second completed for the month, Lullabies for Little Criminals. I planned three for the month and hope to get another one in, have two in progress.

Jun 28, 2016, 3:38am

I completed one more last week and hope to squeeze another in by the end of the month. Tickers adjusted.

Jun 28, 2016, 11:21am

As usual, June's been a slow reading month for me - between my birthday and all the associated plans and the general exhaustion that comes with the heat, I've only managed two ROOTs this month (and only three library books, which is a really slow month for me). I don't expect much more in July, but it should get better in August.

Jun 28, 2016, 12:53pm

Added to my ticker as well as the group ticker.

Jun 28, 2016, 2:32pm

I finished Svetlana Aleksjevitj: Krigen har ikke et kvindeligt ansigt which is both recommendable and almost unbearable.
Tickers updated!

Jun 28, 2016, 6:09pm

Sixth of the month for 43/75 ... Marisha Pessl's Special Topics in Calamity Physics (1½*)

Jun 28, 2016, 8:18pm

Ohhhhh! I loved that book. Very innovative and plenty of plot twists. My book discussion group read it and it gave us plenty to talk about.

Jun 28, 2016, 9:00pm

Editado: Jun 29, 2016, 12:55am

>73 benitastrnad: It seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it. I thought it was awfully contrived.

ETA: But it was about school, so it fit into the June "School Days School Days" theme of the Reading Through Time group — and since I picked that theme, I'm trying to do as much ROOTing as possible on "school" stories this month.

And I just went out and bought the newly published Once Was a Time, which an RTT member had read as an Early Review and which also fits the "school" theme, so that's one more book I've reading that won't satisfy my ROOTs quota. But it's a quickie middle-grade reader.

Jun 29, 2016, 6:55am

>74 ipsoivan: I read that book years ago but still remember it vividly so I second your recommendation 8-)

Jun 29, 2016, 8:27am

I have managed to complete one more root for the month taking my tally to 27/48. Tickers adjusted.

Jun 29, 2016, 11:14am

I've finished a Root and have updated the tickers.

Editado: Jun 29, 2016, 11:42am

Where does everybody stand this month? 2 days left!

Editado: Jun 29, 2016, 12:06pm

I've read six ROOT books in June, and discarded one, unread, for a total of 7 this month!

Total for 2016 is 41, and only my personal ticker was updated.

Jun 29, 2016, 1:28pm

I've added one more ROOT to both my own and the group tickers. I've pulled out a very short one next, so hopefully that will just squeak into June's totals too!

Jun 29, 2016, 4:54pm

I've read seven ROOTS this month and hope to make it eight tonight!

Jun 29, 2016, 9:01pm

I expect to finish another ROOT by tomorrow night. That will give me 3 for the month.

Jun 29, 2016, 9:53pm

Finished my eighth ROOT of the month, bringing my total to 40. My personal ticker is updated but not the group ticker.

Jun 29, 2016, 10:27pm

Here is my report for June 2016

UpROOTED books: 8
ROOTless books: 5
Added to the TBR shelves: 0

The ROOTs were:

The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida
How to Manage Your Slaves by Marcus Sidonius Falx by Jerry Toner
Jingo by Terry Pratchett
My Grammar and Me (Or Should that Be I?) by Caroline Taggart and J. A Wines
Down Under by Bill Bryson
The Crossroads Brotherhood by Robert Fabbri
The Racing Factions by Robert Fabbri
The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia by Sir Philip Sidney

ROOTs in YTD: 38

Personal and group tickers have been adjusted, but hopefully not harmed.

Jun 30, 2016, 4:06am

I'm currently reading ROOT number 7, but I am not sure if I can finish it before midnight. My ticker is up-to-date.

Jun 30, 2016, 8:14am

I won't finish any ROOT by midnight, so my total remains the same.

I read only eight books this month, way below my average, but 6 of them were ROOTs!

Editado: Jun 30, 2016, 9:00am

I'm almost finished with Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein so I'm adding it to my June totals. That gives me 18 complete against the goal of 30. Tickers updated.

Jun 30, 2016, 11:31am

Now that it's nearing the end of June.. I have re-evaluated and decided my new goal was too much of an increase for me over last year.. I'm modifying.
I had previously set a goal of 12 chunksters, in addition to 24 "regular" roots and another 24 non-ROOTs...
That has proven simply not feasible with my current lifestyle... SO my modified goal, looking at what I have going on in the rest of the year, is as follows:
30 ROOTs for the year (this is still an increase of 6 ROOTs over last year), and I am STILL going to try to read 12 chunksters, but that is part of the total goal and will be my own personal goal instead. I have changed the ticker in the ticker thread already to track ALL ROOTs (Rather than just the chunksters).
And for that goal, I am doing well so far (but July-Dec will be busy...). :)

Jun 30, 2016, 1:29pm

I've managed to sneak one more under the wire, have updated all tickers (mine and group).

I managed to squeeze another ROOT in this month - Den fremmede ven by Christoph Hein. Interesting book

Yeah! I finished 2 more ROOTs so that I get my stars back!

>75 CurrerBell: Glad you liked Once was a Time. I enjoyed it but unfortunately it wasn't a ROOT for me either.

Finally, one more ROOT for June. Only 2 ROOTs for this month. I am really slowing down - I think it is all those library books to keep up with the challenges and research.

I was hoping to finish a 6th for June but it was not to be. Right sided heart catheterization and books do not mix.

Got 5 anyway! Updating my personal ticker (no pun intended) but I'll leave the group ticker to the professionals.

I ended up with 10 ROOTs for June! Although none of them were novels.

>96 enemyanniemae: Ooooh, take it easy. I had a stent put in just about five years ago after a near-fatal heart attack at the very end of May 2011. As I write this, I'm sitting at my computer puffing on a nebulizer, which I only used as needed but I've been awfully short of breath these past few days even after only very short activity so I've started using it four times daily until I feel better.

Hope you feel better soon.

Only 3 books this month. I updated the ticker.

Well, I guess we were all so busy reading ROOTs that we didn't chat much so here is the new thread for July.

Hello everyone! So, I wasn't expecting that my June would be quite this slow - three less ROOTs read than last June; but still not quite as bad as I thought. I also started reading Charming Billy: A Novel by Alice McDermott late on Monday night, June 27th! I was so hoping to finish this book by the end of the month, but no such luck, I suppose! Oh well!

Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for June:

Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 3
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 1
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 3
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 28
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 7

I finished 7 books this month, thanks to lots of travel time in the car. That was before my CD player decided to go kaput. Now I will have to listen to the books in the house - until I get the CD player up and running.

I did not update any tickers.

Editado: Jul 1, 2016, 10:27pm

I finished 3 books as sound recordings.
1.Smiley's People
2. Brisingr
3. Shadow and Bone

I had four books that I read. I finished these 3. Serpent's Tooth, Tomatoland, and I finally managed to get to one of the longest held titles in my collection - Floor of the Sky. I could not finish Allegiant and quit after about 150 pages. I figured that it went off my reading list so that makes it count as a ROOT.
