(other) call numbers

Hi, I'm very thrilled with tinyCat! Thanks!

I am having two problems with call numbers in the opac.

I have choosen “personal or custom system” in librarything as standard call number system (as shown here: http://blog.librarything.com/main/2015/02/your-call-number-system/), but:

(a) When viewing a certain book on tinyCat the dewey call number is shown if it exists. This does not depend on the existence of some other call number (LC or personal etc.).
\\ Note: I am able to use “othercallnumber:” to search other call numbers even if they are not shown! \

(b) When viewing a book which does not have a dewy call number, the “other call number” is shown.
\\ Note: The is independet of the existence of some other call number like LC. So, when viewing a book with no dewey call number which has a LC call number and an other call number, the other call number is shown. \\

Examples can be found on my page:

For (a) look at
https://www.librarycat.org/lib/jjhaegele/search/text/Dever
and notice that “9 Merkmale einer gesunden Gemeinde” has the call number “250” (in librarything it has the dewey call number “250” and the other call number „Chr Church - Dever 2009”).
\\ Regarding the first above note: see https://www.librarycat.org/lib/jjhaegele/search/text/othercallnumber%3A+Chr+Chur... \\

For (b) look at the same page for the book “Persönliche Evangelisation” has the call number “Chr Mis Evan - Dever 2008” (in librarything it has no dewey call number, no LC call number an the other caall number “Chr Mis Evan - Dever 2008”).
\\ Regarding the second above note: see https://www.librarycat.org/lib/jjhaegele/search/text/40+tage The book has a manually added (wrong) LC call number {it does work with correct LC numbers as well as testet with https://www.librarycat.org/lib/jjhaegele/search/text/callnumber%3Abv4011.3 } BUT the personalized other call number is shown (as I wanted).

tinyCat should probably show the call number which belongs to the standard call number system chosen by the user.

The book has a manually added (wrong) LC call number {it does work with correct LC numbers as well}

You do realize that manually added LC numbers theoretically percolate up to the work level (this process hasn't worked for a couple years, but that may at some point be fixed), so that adding deliberately wrong data here risks messing things up for everyone with a copy of the work?

This is not germane to your main point, and I quite agree that TinyCat (the capitalization which I've always seen used by LT staff) ought to actually use it, given that the field for "Call Number" is present.

>1 jjhaegele: I think I can help! On top of selecting "personal or custom system" on LibraryThing's end, you should also select that system in your TinyCat "Circulation" Settings here: https://www.librarycat.org/admin/settings/circsettings. As it stands, I see that you have Dewey Decimal Classification selected, which may be causing your problem.

Please let me know if this fixes your issue! If not, I'll take a closer look at some examples.

Thank you. (Sorry for the delay of answering...)

lorax: (1) I didn’t realize that this could mess up things. Sorry. However, I removed the wrong LC number. (2) don’t know, how I decided to write tinyCat instead of TinyCat. ;-)

kristilabrie: Didn’t know of that page. Brilliant! Now everything is as it is supposed to be.

Hi Lorax,

I didn't know about this percolating upwards thing. My library has its own invented call number system and I use the LC field to enter these into because when I first started using LT there was no option for any call number system other than Dewey or LC. After the creation of the field for other call numbers I had to keep using the LC field because there is no easy way to transfer all my existing entries in that field into the new field (I don't know why not as you would think it would be a simple thing to do a mass migration).

So I guess I'm going to cause major headaches for everyone if the percolating process does get fixed.

I have selected "Personal or custom system" on both the TinyCat circulation page and the LibraryThing "Other settings" page, and I checked "Include call number in detail-page Status section".

Still, when I export transactions from the Checked Out list, I get the Dewey number, not the Other Call Number.

Am I missing something?

>6 Golondrinas: Good catch! That's a bug that we need to fix, I've made a report for our developers to look into and will follow-up with any updates. Sorry for the trouble in the meantime.

Finally following up with this: this has been fixed! Let me know if you see any issues, though. Thanks for your (very extended) patience.
