I have many books in my library without cover picture. How can I add a cover picture?

There's a 'Change cover' link in the left hand column of each Book page.

How do I add a cover from the Internet or another source, eg. Amazon, when needed. The "Change cover" link just starts the process.

As a first step, I usually click the "Recalculate Cover" link to ensure all the recently added covers are available. Then click the "Change cover image" link. If your cover is already there, simply click it to select and add it to your book. However, be aware that the ISBN may change when you select an Amazon cover.

Detailed instruction on adding and changing covers can be found in the wiki:

Did you follow the instructions in the link posted above?

What, exactly, is the problem you are having? It will help us help you if you will describe the steps you are taking and where the problem is occurring.

Sometimes I can see a cover I want to use in the search results list, but my edition doesn't match the edition with the cover. Shouldn't all the covers for the work show up if you want to change the cover? Recently it seems to have been depopulated with few or no options.

It depends on the book.

Sometimes the cover you see in the search result is the most popular cover for the work, but not for your edition. Or the cover associated with that ISBN might have changed.

On the Change Cover page, you should be seeing all the covers that LT users have uploaded plus all covers that Amazon provides. However, if you choose an Amazon cover, LT must change the ISBN on your book to match the Amazon file in order to display it. Conversely, if Amazon changes the cover associated with that ISBN, the cover in your catalog will change, too.

Also, if the cover associated with an Amazon listing was uploaded by a customer, it won't display automatically. You have to do something akin to a cut 'n' paste to use it.

I'm trying to add a cover to a title, but get an error message.

I've tried uploading an image file (a 8KB jpg) and get the message:"Problem - We are unable to process that as an image." I get the same message when I copy the image address from Amazon:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31jkIB3NcVL._SX218_BO1,204,203,...

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Nothing, probably. Try again in a few hours. Known bug.

It is marked 'fixed' but seems to be recurring.

>9 SidemanBancroft: I'm not able to replicate this problem. I can't tell from the above discussion—have you tried downloading the image file to your computer and uploading it?

I've just tested a few cover uploads (both file uploads, and copy/pasting URLs) on my own library with no problems.

https://www.librarything.com/topic/257084 is the other discussion. It comes and goes.

One of my books also has a back cover; I can't see a way to add this. Nor to upload a new cover to a book without the previous one being replaced.

There is no place for back covers. If you upload a new cover it will replace your old cover for the book in Your Books, but it will still remain on the Work if someone else is using it. It will even remain on the Work for a while if no one else is using it, until the system gets around to cleaning it up.

>13 btelvedal: You can add a second copy of the book to your catalog. For instance, I own multiple copies of The Wind in the Willows in various editions and with different illustrators. Each one has it's respective cover.

>13 btelvedal: By back cover, do you mean like a wrap-around dust jacket? If that's the case, lay it flat and photograph or scan it in one piece.

If you have any skill with graphics photos, you could do something similar by stitching two pics, one of the front and one of the back, into one image and then uploading the resulting image as the cover. That's the solution many people have used for works such as Ace Doubles, which literally have two front covers.

You can see some examples here:

Thank you for all good ideas!
The book has a hard wrap cover; I will put it on the list for a photoshop-day...

I uploaded a photo but can't change the direction (it's sideways rather than upright). There seems to be no way to remove the image. Ideas?

>18 AromaticMuffinsCore: You will need to change it before you upload it - images have directives on how to be shown and even if it looks ok on a phone/computer, the file itself may actually be on its side without the directions. Once it is uploaded, it has a static direction.
