I feel like I've had such a craft block lately. I don't know what I want to start on. I've been a down in general really and I think that's the main reason why I've not been crafting much after the Christmas rush.

Feeling the pressure of birthdays and such I just finished turning this image from some wrapping paper into a cross-stitch pattern. Almost certainly won't finish it before I need to send my friend's birthday present. She sent me a gift with fox wrapping paper last year, so I stitched one for her birthday (end of this week), and this year she sent a different fox wrapping paper and a fox motif tea towel, which I took as a slight hint...

Otherwise I've still got my tablecloth to work on, the mountain design to put finishing touches on (on the pattern that is) and then post in my shop, and then new patterns to consider for the shop. I'm thinking of stitching the bell hooks quote "I will not have my life narrowed down."

Oh, I'm with you, Meredith. Total crafting slump right now. Until yesterday, I hadn't even stepped foot into my sewing room since Christmas! But it's now all sorted and tidied, and I'll try to get my new thread up later today, and maybe that'll kick my keister in gear...

LOVE the fox picture, by the way.

My blue metallic thread is mysteriously missing so I replaced the blue with gold. Bit annoyed, but it would be ages before I could get more and the recipient's birthday was the 21st.

Generally quite pleased with this though. If anyone wants the pattern let me know.

I've seen very similar foxes all over the place now that I've seen it in your cross stitch. There was some fox fabric in the Hancock's catalog and today there was a steno book or notebook in Staples that had one on the cover. :-)

Lois, foxes are definitely in vogue at the moment. I'm waiting for giraffes to have their turn. Actually I need bunnies to take over as my nephew is very serious about bunnies (his name is Benjamin, so he's been called Benjamin Bunny quite a lot since he was born).

My second pair of socks knit!

Chunky as it's really hard for me to use smaller needles. One was a tiny bit too short so I had to go back and unpick and add a few rows. The yarn is Chroma in Carnival from KnitPicks(wool nylon blend).

While KnitPicks premium acrylic feels very nice their bulky acrylic is a heavy worsted at best, certainly not bulky. Their Shine and Comfy cotton blends feel really lovely though.

>14 mabith: Nicely done. Learning to knit is one of those things I wish I'd done years ago. I never learned to play bridge, either. Ha. At this point in my life, I'm more likely to learn to play bridge than learn to knit. I don't see how I could fit a new craft into my life when I already have so many UFOs. And the bridge thing? Naw, that's not happening either.

Thanks, Lori!

I've been knitting for a decade, but since I was never able to use smaller needles I never bothered with socks (just the one pair so I could say I'd done the process). My chronic pain illness, CRPS, is super cranky and hates everything, so I can't wear most socks either. I'm kicking myself for using that pretty yarn on these socks now, since I can't stand or walk in them, at least with the purl side on the inside.

Becky, I think at some point new crafts are best adopted when they share materials with the crafts we already do (depending on how much room you have for storage!). I think that's why I've mostly switched to various types of embroidery, as there's so much creative freedom there.

Just finished this today, and I'm really happy with it in pretty much every way (quite a rarity sometimes!).

The quote is from bell hooks and eventually I'd like to stitch something that includes the next bit of it: I will not have my life narrowed down. I will not bow down to somebody else's whim or to someone else's ignorance.

It's something I relate to from the point of view of being disabled.

An art swap group I was part of about 10 years ago has reformed, and I'm so excited. It was a great group, and those pieces make up the majority of my original art wall. We're having loose themes now, and this month's was 'containers.' I'm not sure why this image was in my head, but it wouldn't leave, so I stitched it. The colors are more vibrant and contrasting in person and the fish have metallic thread on them which doesn't really show.

>36 avaland: Just a group to swap original artwork. It's a month by month thing, so if you opt in for the month you're paired with someone and you exchange pieces (any medium welcome). Most of us don't have any formal training. We were initially active about ten years ago, when we were around ages 17-24, and it was a fun (and cheap) way to acquire original art. I've still got four pieces I received on display.

Finished up some hats!

The white and blue one will go to my brother (it's a nice baggy cotton), but mostly they were all just to keep my hands busy.

The pattern for the pink and green one is here, and is based on a 1920s pattern. It gave me a nice excuse to buy a couple odd lots of buttons.

Abr 11, 2016, 4:25 pm

Thanks, Amber!

I am kicking myself for not trying to take some of the store of knit hats to the family reunion I went to, though as we were trying to only use carry on bags I wouldn't really have had room. There were other crafters there and it was nice to all knit together a bit, and we took a field trip to a yarn store, where I went overboard in my early birthday present to myself. I'd only brought one set of circulars and one set of double-pointed needles with me so I went into default mode and made a hat.

The way it sort of self-striped was interesting/odd. I wish I'd gotten more of that yarn, it was a lovely, soft 100% merino and the line was discontinued. I would have, but the sale section of that yarn shop was in a whole separate building, so I'd already bought some "more expensive than I usually buy" yarn.

I started using said yarn for this cowl pattern with a neat stitch pattern. I've seen a similar effect that involved yarn-overs and was much more difficult to keep track of it (though it may have been reversible). I should have shortened the width, but I didn't, so I've had to order another skein of it.

42avaland

You've been busy! I love the blue/green/brown hat above.

43mabith
Abr 15, 2016, 2:14 pm

That blue/green/mix yarn was soo pretty and super soft. It had purple in it too! My mom quickly claimed it, though she's lucky my aunt Catherine left the gathering early, since otherwise I'd have passed it to her (my mom has a lot of my hats).

Abr 15, 2016, 2:15 pm

Second swap for my art swap group. I am despairing at the inability of people to commit to the group or accurately judge how busy they are.

It's a very alien flower which allowed me to use lots of my specialty threads.

I'm kind of annoyed about the flake-level, given that most of them are in their late 20s or older. We had a better communication/completion rate when we were all college aged! Maybe back then we just more enthusiastic. I haven't been successful about getting people to participate in community posts or chats either.

Abr 17, 2016, 9:36 pm

I was using a coupon for a free photo book to make one featuring most of the embroidery I've done since I took it up in 2010. Realizing I didn't have a picture of the first cross-stitch piece I did, I went searching for it.

Given that I free-handed it, no chart at all (hence why the letter heights are different on each row!), I think I did quite well! The line is from (and is the title of) one of my favorite songs. That little blob at the top is supposed to be a bird, but I think I'll unpick it and then hoop and hang the piece. I find the lyrics of the song very comforting when I'm feeling down and could use the reminder lately.

I was deeply disappointed with the versions of the song on YouTube. I guess when you sing something so much, and have always just sung it plainly, all the tarting up and instrumentation just sound wrong.

I've been doing a lot of knitting, but it all needs blocking which I don't have room to do in my apartment. Waiting for a dip in the weather to do it at my mom's. I have two baby scarves knit from this pattern to block. One is in a muted rainbow yarn and the other is this green that I also made this cable knit headband/earwarmer with:

The cable pattern is here.

Now I'm working on this shawl, which will be the largest thing I've knit by a long ways. I'm currently just dreading the eventual blocking and wondering why I'm knitting a wool shawl when the high today is 94 (my chronic pain issues can't deal with the heat, so I run the AC all the time, but still). The colors are more vibrant in person. Majorly splurged on this and the above yarn from Miss Babs, which I'm still shocked at myself over (most of their skeins do seem to be over 500 yards though).

My mom and I also did some yarn dyeing experiments, but they're still drying at her house, so no pictures yet.

66avaland

Interesting projects—and that's an interesting cable pattern. A wool project does seem antithetical to outside temps in the nineties, but maybe the AC is just cool enough?

I made the mistake of browsing spoonflower for embroidery (and then knitting) themed fabric. Ended up with a yard each of these:

Planning to make a couple project bags, and maybe a circular knitting needle holder for my friend. I got her to learn to knit but now I'm realizing we overlap in crafts almost totally. I feel like I need to post an in-process picture of this one, because it's a bit frustrating to work on. It's another bookmark, a Christmas gift for a friend, and the titles are some of her favorite books or related to crafts and hobbies. I've got this bottom bit to finish and then another similarly sized section on top before it's done.

It has reminded me why I advise people not to do backstitch on top of stitching above 18 count (this is 28). The fill on the books with text is done in half stitches, but it's still pretty fiddly and difficult to work on at night even with the full spectrum lamp. I had to guess on some things (including multiple Laura Ingalls Wilder related titles, and the first Babysitter's Club book since I'm not sure who her favorite babysitter is and asking would raise suspicion as I never read those) but hopefully she's not confused by any of the inclusions.

And I finished my mermaid piece, based on a faulty computer translation

They wanted mermaids to be sirens meaning the alarm bells, but got sirens as in mythical creatures. I have a great love for mermaids, so of course I had to stitch it. I managed to have a major brain fog moment while stitching, messing up the placement of the first mermaid, who I'd totally stitched (and started on another bit) before I realized. Had to redesign the rest of the pattern as I wasn't willing to totally unpick her. I don't know if I actually like this version more or if I'm just convincing myself of that.

The metallic thread in their tails looks so amazing in person.

Thanks, y'all!

I have been crafting, just rather slowly. I've been in a funk, so I've been playing slightly mindless games while listening to my audiobooks too much of the time, and then realizing I need to read these print books so getting less stitching done.

Yesterday I took the plunge and bought a cheap, basic sewing machine that was on a good sale. It's a Singer, though I feel like the brand on the cheap models doesn't really matter anymore, and it's being delivered today! I've been thinking about getting one for a while, and the thought of hauling my mom's large, heavy, old machine over to make a couple of project bags was the tipping point. Plus now I have a justification for my fabric stash.

I had my dad alter the legs to an old enamel table (the classic red and white type with the leaves that slide out), so it's the perfect height to pull up to the couch, so I can be a little more comfortable while sitting up. Hoping it will facilitate lots of use of the machine.

101avaland
Dic 2, 2016, 3:48 pm

>100 mabith: I hope your Singer works out! Anything should be better than hauling out your mom's old heavy thing. And a new (ish) table, too!

Rest assured that you need no justification for your fabric stash here in this group! LOL! Looking forward to seeing your projects.

102mabith
Dic 2, 2016, 5:08 pm

Ha, well, the fabric stash is sillier given that 80% wouldn't even be suitable to embroider on really. The magic of Amazon came through and I've got the machine now! Already feeling craft guilt over not cutting out some fabric for tests tomorrow. Though I forgot my mom's sewing box with thread spools, so I think I only have bright teal and red to use and wind onto bobbins. Oh well, good enough for my project bag pattern experiments.

The new machine is only 10 lbs, which is perfect for me. I think my mom's is at least 20.

>102 mabith: Oh, that sounds very lightweight. You go, girl!! I think my machine must be at least 30 lbs but it doesn't ever get put away or taken anywhere.

I'm in a small enough place that the low weight is probably slightly necessary. It will mainly stay in one spot, but crafting being crafting... I have realized I'll need to move my cat's cave (aka her carrier), as it's where my feet need to be and she is treating the machine the same way she treats the vacuum.

So what are your sewing plans?

Definitely project bags, and probably placemats.

I decided to do an 'instinct' project, mainly to get used to the machine. It's not the prettiest (and was limited since I don't have many larger pieces of fabric that I was willing to use for this), but it's functional and I did it without a pattern. Didn't have enough of that green fabric to make the side bits the same height, and didn't want to make it so much smaller, and just had flour sack fabric for the lining.

Definitely still happy with the machine. It should do well for me.

I got two stitchable sweater form ornaments from this lovely Etsy shop. I'm sending one to a family friend and will maybe give the other to my mom.

Those ornaments are so cute! One can find the coolest stuff on Etsy.

Your bag is a good starts and sounds like it was a lesson in improvisation, which is always good. What plans do you have going forward? (or do you have any)

Lois, more bags, mainly! There's a project bag pattern I really liked, and it's basic formula is quite flexible. Definitely making one for my friend's birthday in a few weeks.
This is the pattern/tutorial:

After that... not too sure. Placemats probably and some super minature art quilts maybe.

I went ahead and tested that pattern at its original size (it's pretty small), and this is the outcome:

Need to find some different style cording and get over to Jo-Ann's for some basics.
