an online book review site which also functions as a social network (pretty similar to goodreads and LibraryThing)

That does not describe LibraryThing.

Possible things the site might do does not include cataloging. This isn't going to be better than what already exists for me.

Lol I love how people always do these cute little projects and somehow think they're going to come up with something better than the established sites that have been around for years with thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of users.

That, too. You don't build a community in weeks or even months.

Not to mention that Tim has built up a team that is constantly fixing things and improving things and adding new things to the site. Someone who only joined on Tuesday doesn't even begin to know what this site can do. But s/he can do it better all alone in a short period of time!

She's gone now, so I guess she'll never know...

So you're going to do better in a project with a timescale of six months or so than a team of professionals has done over ten years? And you want the loyal users of one of the existing sites to help you build a competitor (to what you think the site is, rather than to what it actually is)?

Yeah, right.
