I am a novice working with Library Thing. I have added a few hundred books to our church library collection and now realize that I have done a rather dumb thing. I have mixed children's books with adult books. Is there an easy way to separate the two collections into their own collections? I originally put in all the children's books the tag "children" so that I could at least get a printout at some point of all the children's books. Can I use that tag to make a new collection?

Thanks

Do you mean "collection", a division of a single LT library (which it's easy to view and search only one at a time, but you cannot prevent your users from switching between them or viewing both at the same time), or an entirely separate account?

If having separate LT Collections within your account will do what you want, you can easily do that using Power Edit (accessed via the little lightning bolt). Here's how:

1. Create a Collection for the children's books. From your catalog, click on the Collections dropdown in the upper left and choose "Edit Collections" (the bottom option), and choose "Add new Collection".
Call this "Children" or whatever you want.

2. Search for the "children" tag in your catalog. Make sure you search tags only (do this by typing tag: "children" in the search box). I see you have used both "children" and "Children" as tags; you'll want to type

tag: "children" tag: "Children"

to find them both.

3. Click on the Power Edit button. You'll see something like "Select all 155 books" as an option. Select that option, then click on the "Collections" tab. Click on the "Children" collection, and then choose "Add to Collections".

At this point, all the books tagged "children" or "children's" will be in the new "Children" collection and *also* in the default "Your Library" collection, where they are now. If you want to remove them from the "Your Library" collection, so that it will contain only the adult books, then stay on the Collections tab with all the books selected, click on "Your Library", and then "Remove from Collections". Do not attempt to remove a book from a Collection by deleting the book; that will delete the book entirely from all collections in your library.

4. Take a look at the new Children's collection to make sure that there isn't anything you tagged "children" that isn't actually a children's book, which you might have done, for instance, on a parenting book. If you find any, move them out of the Children's collection (click on the little brown box with an arrow in it in the rightmost column in your catalog to change collections on a single book).

This takes a lot longer to read than it does to do.

There's no easy way to move things to a new account - exporting the catalog (via the Import/Export feature under "More"), creating a new file with the subset you want, and uploading that is your best option, but you'd still need to use Power Edit to remove the books from your existing account.

Thank you so very much!! Will try it sometime soon. I have to think about it to make sure it is what I want to do.
