I am really sad about the film version of The Dark is Rising. It seems that the book has been altered so significantly that the film retains none of its original magic. :(

Maybe that's not the way to look at it. My mom heard an interview with the...someone to do with the movie, and what she said was, he basically wrote a whole new story, it's not really based on the book at all. It's another 'inspired by the book' situation.

It doesn't mean it's necessarily going to be a bad movie, it just means it isn't really a movie of The Dark is Rising. Like I, Robot isn't really a movie based on the book I, Robot, but is still a fun (albeit not great) movie.

NPR had an interesting piece the other day about The Seeker, as it is now called (they've dropped The Dark Is Rising all together from the title) and they talked to Susan Cooper, and they talked to the guy who wrote the screenplay (who also did Trainspotting). She said that it was "different", and sounded rather sad about it. She said she had read the screenplay, and seen the trailer, and had sent in suggested changes, but does not know if they were taken into account. He said that because of the fairly dreamy, cerebral feel of the book, it didn't translate well to film, so changes had to be made.

*snort* because movies can't be dreamy and cerebral. Riiiight.

Right, well, exactly. So what he meant was, it doesn't translate well into a big action, blockbuster, American boy coming of age movie, which is what they wanted. Nevermind that wasn't the book that they purchased to begin with. Oh, and he said they didn't want it confused with Harry Potter, which is why they made Will American. :P
