I think it's a great idea. I went to a talk by Nick Hornby (and others) last night at Foyles and it was terrific. It kept us talking for hours afterwards.

Saturday May 19th there is a Readers & Writers Day at Borders, Charing Cross Road. Top names from across the publishing industry including authors, agents, publishers etc as it's the launch of Jane Wenham-Jones's ne book Wannabe A Writer? Authors coming include Katie Fforde, Adele Parks, Mil Millington, Judy Astley, Lesley Cookman, Lynne Barrett-Lee.
It's from 12-4pm and is free

Tim Butcher on his book Blood River: A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart at Willesden Green Library on 12 October 2012. He's a Telegraph journalist and made this journey that the locals described as a suicide trip!

Wimbledon Bookfest is coming up at the beginning of October. Lots of events etc. Highlights include Alan Johnson, Clare Balding, Ian McEwan, Sophie Kinsella. I'm going to several, including a poetry reading by Juliet Stevenson which I'm really looking forward to. You can see full listing here:

Everything Flows: A Celebration of Vasily Grossman

Vasily Grossman, now widely regarded as the greatest Russian novelist of the 20th century, died 50 years ago this month. The author of the remarkable Everything Flows and Life and Fate (the only manuscript ever to be itself arrested by the Soviet authorities), Grossman was a crucial witness to the multiple horrors of the period. He did not live to see his greatest books published. In a unique evening of readings and discussion, Robert Chandler, Grossman’s finest translator, will report back from the first Grossman conference in Russia and, alongside commentary from historian Antony Beevor and journalist John Lloyd and extracts and stories read by Janet Suzman, will assess Grossman’s extraordinary achievement and his legacy both in Russia and internationally. The evening will be chaired by Gareth Evans.

A little late, as it's already happening, but I've just discovered Battersea Literary Festival.

I'm going to hear Matt Haig tomorrow night on Satire as Reflection at Battersea Arts Centre. The full programme can be found here:

I went to the Matt Haig event last night - a bit puzzled about why they choose the title "Satire ads Reflection" but it was a fascinating and every enjoyable evening (incidentally in a lovely venue with a cute bar downstairs which serves coffee till closing time!). Got to meet some fellow bibliophiles, chatter about books, hear Matt speak. He was so engaging and interesting that I bought his latest book while there and got it signed, and then got to have a quick drink with him and couple of others (including Isabel Losada of Battersea Park Road to Enlightenment fame). Really great evening. So now I'm a convert to author events & would encourage others to go. Roll on Wimbledon Bookfest!
