Afternoon everyone,

Glad to find some fellow book lovers in the area. Recently I have become interested in starting a book charity. To be honest I have never really been interested in charities that have felt so distant to me.

Book, however, are near and dear to my heart. The only problem is, not everyone has enough of them! I was thinking of getting boxes of books together and giving them to those in need of literary enlightenment.

Would anyone be interested in helping me out?

There's a great project -- the prison book program -- that does exactly this for prisoners.

I was hoping to hit more than one group of people though. Prisoners for sure but also schools and low income communities.

It occurs to me that you might check out

http://www.gotbooks.com/

which is a local book charity organization that needs volunteers -- you could learn enough about what they do and don't do that you can make some good decisions about how to go about your idea.

Thanks for the link, Theodosia. I have a bag of books left by a former occupant of my apartment and I had been wondering what to do with them (I thought about PBP, but these books aren't what they're looking for).

Oh good! One of the really excellent things is that GotBooks will pick them up, so I've only had to lug the bags and boxes out to my foyer, and GB comes by during the day.

I am learning some things about gotbooks that make me think this is a VERY bad choice. Email me if you want what I have seen and heard.

I do know there's no tax deduction for GotBooks, which means it must exist purely to make a profit.

However, I had a bunch of old textbooks nobody else wanted which they were happy to take.
