can be wonderful each time it's recalled. As readers, we all have books that we fall in love with. They may be lovingly re-read to the point where the volume is nearly loved to tatters. They may be the books that never are found more than room away from you and are always sheltered beneath the same roof you are. They may be so revered that they're encased in oiled wood and polished glass, never exposed to open air unless caressed by white cotton gloves. But that's only part of story that must be told about bibliophiles.

There's probably an author or two they love in that special way book lovers love everything connected to The Book. All well and good. But my interest and subject for discussion about beloved authors is strictly prurient.

If you could have a fantasy affair to remember with an author, who would it be and why?

OK, I'll go first.

For me it is Richard Ford. The Richard Ford of the Frank Bascombe novels, Independence Day, and Rock Springs; the Richard Ford of the 1990s whom I met at a major book fair and enjoyed a fabulous waterfront lunch with in the Magic City.

Was there chemistry? As far as I was concerned, cold fusion in a test tube had nothing on what I had for him. Could I feel chemistry from the other reactant? In my memory, you betcha.

To me, he held all the Big Sky country in his light blue eyes, and bore unmistakable resemblance to the men who people the stories told about those skies. He was tall, lithe, and attractively melancholy, and talked in a voice that I always hear when I read his books.

It's a damn good thing that we both only had a single beverage with our lunches and that I had to get back to work as a book fair volunteer, and that Alan Cheuse sensed something required him to take charge of his friend and whisk him away.

Otherwise. . .

Well, I kinda hoped folks would spill their fantasies.

Make it all up! Fantasies are just private imaginations; this thread is just a place to see what they look like in print. ;^)

There I was in the queue waiting to get my book signed, but the guy behind me was standing much too close. I stepped forward, so did he, just as close. I turned to give him the nasty-eye. It was Johnny Depp.

I gulped, stammered and once our books were signed I invited him back to my place for a drink. He gave that lovely grin of his and said that would be nice.

My key was still in my front-door and he squeezed past me, then I woke up!

LoL. Glad you joined LT just to post this. Please do another, only don't make it that tired trope, "it was just a dream." Nobody gets tired of Johnny Depp "affairs."
