I've realized that I don't have time to work on my novel as much as I'd like, but I have some ideas for short stories. I'm concerned about writing stories that are too similar to ones that have been published. Does anyone know of a database, or other reference source, that I could query to see whether similar stories have been published? If it matters, they will probably be mysteries.

Similar stories have definitely always been done. The difference is all in the execution.
You could write the ten-thousandth locked-room murder mystery and it can still be interesting and good. But short stories are very hard to get that good.

I'd say it's better to just write the story. Don't worry if it's already been done. They've all already been done.
HOW you write it matters.
Though the best bet is to find various mystery magazines and see if they've digitized their archive.
Ellery Queen Mysteries springs to mind as a good first check.
