PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING SPAM

Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:

-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.

-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.

Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors: http://www.librarything.com/about_authors.php
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85810
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page: http://www.librarything.com/spam_works.php
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.

Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

56CurrerBell
Nov 26, 2015, 9:11 am

Problem with these "spammers" is that their posts have been tombstoned so I can't read them. Even when I can tell from the subject line that the post was almost certainly spam, I'm really reluctant to flag an account like a lemming without actually seeing the spam itself.

57rybie2
Nov 26, 2015, 9:28 am

>55 .Monkey.: Ah, you noticed? That's my routine. When I flag a work as spam, I usually leave it to 4 other members to vote on it. I'll vote on the works I flag as spam only if there's some uncertainty by others, but I have no problems voting on works flagged by others. If I had to explain why, I suppose I'd say that with a lower threshold for squashing spam works (4 vs. 8 votes for photo flagging, for example), I've already put my opinion out there, and others can weigh in.

61Lyndatrue
Nov 26, 2015, 11:42 am

I suspect that whatever's stuck is going to stay stuck until today ends. Too bad, too, since that means those profiles can just go on misbehaving. The topics showing as tombstoned are gone, but if the profile is redflagged, then it's still able to spew. :-(

I dunno. Maybe someone wants to try sending an email to the info account? Maybe Seth (aka sryder)? I'm not volunteering to do this, merely pointing it out as a potential avenue.

Gone.

BTW, the author just sent me the following message:

For what it's worth, the $10.99 paperback (36 pages long) is written with the same disregard for grammar and punctuation. The author is the only LT member to have entered it.

672wonderY

68Lyndatrue
Nov 29, 2015, 11:49 am

Sorry, folks, I figured out who it was, and flagged the account. Yeah, I'm heartless. No, I'm not naming names (I actually searched through the URL history to find it, and it'll take work by anyone else who is thinking about flagging it).

There comes a time when "enthusiastic author" no longer excuses bad behavior. There are so many over there in the Hobnob with Authors group trying to do the right thing; I see no reason to give any further kindness or courtesy to someone who clearly doesn't grasp even the vague principles of how to behave in society.

69.Monkey.
Editado: Nov 29, 2015, 11:59 am

It's not about being heartless or not, we are explicitly told not to flag overzealous authors, but to let staff deal with it.

ETA
Off the flagging page itself, in big bold letters:
Important rules

Flagging is for commercial spam only.
Overzealous bookstores, authors and publishers should be reported by email.
Misuse of this feature is a violation of the Terms of Use.

70MarthaJeanne
Editado: Nov 29, 2015, 12:01 pm

You can find the name more easily than that. I haven't flagged the profile yet, but if s/he spams again, I won't hesitate.

71Lyndatrue
Nov 29, 2015, 1:16 pm

I understand and agree (usually) with the arguments against flagging authors. In this case, I claim it is the right thing to do. This is not someone who intends to change. I prefer to encourage the putative author to move elsewhere. I didn't name the profile deliberately, since the number of "flag without question" folks might have gone off and done so, and (especially in this case) it ought to be a deliberate act, with awareness that sometimes there is an exception to everything.

This is one of them.

{It is as much to encourage the positive behavior as it is to punish the negative in this case. We have a little community of struggling authors over on the Hobnob groups. Many of them started out making a similar mistake, and changed their ways. One truly believes in the metaphor implied in discussions of the tragedy of the commons. The "September that never ended" is a prime example.}

72.Monkey.
Nov 29, 2015, 1:45 pm

I am by no means suggesting bad behavior be ignored. But the terms state that it is staff who is to deal with them, and that flagging them is itself a TOS violation. You are meant to let Loranne know and let her deal with it, not to flag yourself.

Crap! I had a long, drawn out, public comment that I was leaving on her profile, and cleverly closed the tab. I'm going to rewrite it here, and then copy and paste it there.

Please understand that I'm telling you this with as much kindness as I can muster.

Please note that your topic was deleted, and your group is headed in that direction as well. It is apparent that you have created at least two accounts, and that they have multiple "copies" of your book, which they've reviewed, and given five stars. In addition, you seem to have six copies yourself (note that your reviews have been flagged out of visibility for violations of the LT Terms of Service).

In general, self-promotion by authors is not welcomed here on LibraryThing, except for the very pleasant group called Hobnob with Authors (http://www.librarything.com/groups/hobnobwithauthors), which I recommend you join.

You started off so well here on LT. You may have let your enthusiasm for your new book lead you into pushing the envelope here.

I strongly recommend the following: Delete the copies of your books from your two other accounts, and then delete the accounts. Delete all but one of the copies from your own library, and your review, and the five stars you've given it. It will sink or rise on its own virtue, and it will have more chance of being welcomed here if you don't appear to be stacking the deck in its favor.

No need to reply.

I made it private, instead.

ETA: Interesting. Either she, or someone, deleted those two accounts we'd noticed. Oh, no, wait. They just got made private.

Why is https://www.librarything.com/profile/jacksonlawrence still going?
Have they found a way around Tim's new spam filters?

Many of the casino ads are suppressed but the profile still needs flagging.

I think that this is going to take manual intervention, either by Tim, or someone with his powers. I'm sure that the profile should have been suppressed by now, and yet it is not.

I am trying to flag the works this spammer registered, but I can't find how. If the profile is gone, are all the works also gone? Probably not, huh...?┐(´д`)┌

The jacksonlawrence profile finally died. Whew. The "books" in that library had already been suppressed as spam (although I admit I didn't check every single one).

Spammer http://www.librarything.com/profile/expozzer needs flagging.

And, if you're inclined to vote on spam works, his 30+ entries could also benefit from a swift demise.

>169 rybie2:

I must say that that is quite a random bunch of spam works.

>169 rybie2: A spammer that takes the time to choose a display for books is one determined spammer. Member since Oct 29; guess they had time to learn their way around a tiny bit.

ETA: At least the reviews have been flagged into invisibility.

>171 Lyndatrue: Now I guess we just need to reach critical flagging mass to get the profile removed before he adds more, or even undoes the votes on the spam works.

Is there a way to handle spam lists? I've just come across http://www.librarything.com/list/10580/all/Live%23TV%23%7D%3E-Dallas-Cowboys-vs-... created by spammer http://www.librarything.com/profile/R.a._Rotan.

Edit: maybe I found my own answer; I flagged the profile and now I don't see the list anymore
