My reading for the last couple years has been lackluster (to say the least), so I'm going to try challenging myself again. I'll be getting a lot of my TBR books out of storage Tuesday and I'll work on figuring out my categories after that.
2AngelaB86
Decided to divide the year into quarters, and try to read one book per category each quarter.
1. Epics
-Q1: The Aeneid
2. Newbery Medal
-Q1: Strawberry Girl
3. Big Fat Book Challenge
4. Star Wars
-Q1: X-Wing: Mercy Kill
5. Sci Fi/Fantasy
-Q1: Stormdancer
-Q2: Good Omens
-Q3: Scorpio Races
-Q4: Bryony and Roses
6. History
-Q1: The Cajuns: Americanization of a People
-Q2: Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time
7. Political Science
8. Religion/Philosophy
-Q1: Thoughts in Solitude
9. Geek Girl Book Challenge
-Q1: Odd and the Frost Giants
10. Mystery
-Q1: Monstrous Regiment of Women
11. Auto/Biography
-Q1: Hypatia of Alexandria
-Q2: I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced
12. Plays
-Q1: Twelfth Night
-Q2: King John
13. Science
14. Poets
-Q1: Alfred, Lord Tennyson: Selected Poems
-Q2: I Could Pee on This and Other Poems by Cats
15. YA
-Q1: Blood of Olympus
16. Random
-Q1: The Sandman: The Doll's House
-Q2: The Sandman: Dream Country
-Q3: Nine Goblins
If I read four books per topic, that's only sixty-four books (not an unreasonable amount).

Nice variety. I'm glad to see someone else with plays & poetry on their list ;) And I agree that 3-5 books per category is a reasonable amount... (although I might personally have difficulty reading 4 books on political science!).
5AngelaB86
Ha! For most of college I double-majored in history and political science, so I have plenty of books to choose from. For plays I'll probably focus on Shakespeare (love him, but haven't felt motivated to read him in a while). And for poetry I'm open to suggestions. It's a category I've always neglected. Think I'll finish Shakespeare's sonnets and read my Tennyson collection, and after that I'm tapped out for ideas.

Great selection of categories! Have fun with the challenge :)

I have been reading a different poet each month this year so you are welcome to browse through my list for ideas! I have ended up reading a lot of poetry in translation the past few years (for example, last month I was reading the 1980 Nobel-prize winner, Czeslaw Milosz, who wrote mostly in Polish). To be honest, I like Tennyson better than Milosz!

It looks like you'll have lots of fun reading for next year. Sometimes I regret not having to read the Newbery books anymore.

>10 AngelaB86: I don't have little kids anymore and I work in a high school library so I don't really have a good reason to read them anymore. Occasionally I get to recommend one that we might have for our lower readers. Richard Peck is one of my favorite authors that I always suggest.

>2 AngelaB86: These look like good categories! What is the Geek Girl Book Challenge?

GGBC is a book club. They pick a book a month from sci fi/fantasy genres, and people can participate through their Facebook group or Twitter. Check it out! http://geekgirlsbookclub.blogspot.com/

Some friends and I decided to try meeting once a month to read Shakespeare's plays together! I've been wanting to do this since I heard about the group in Nashville who get together to do it. I was hoping to read four plays this year, but if we stick with this I'll get through twelve!

>15 AngelaB86: That sounds like a great idea and lots of fun!

Added my first book of the year, to the random category. Volume II of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman series.

Not at all! I have Good Omens on my nightstand for this quarter, and Stardust will probably feature at some point.

Great setup with the quarterly division. Enoy your reading!
23AngelaB86
Thanks!
Finished a history book today, one I started ages ago and kept setting down. Three down, thirteen more to go!

Yep, let's hope this energy holds! I'm currently reading Le Morte d'Arthur, Twelfth Night (Shakespeare), X-Wing: Mercy Kill (Star Wars), and have a couple started-but-set-aside books that will fill out other categories.
28AngelaB86
Finished Book VIII of Le Morte d'Arthur this morning! Still on track to finish the whole thing by the end of March.
29rabbitprincess
I took a King Arthur course in university and read portions of Le Morte d'Arthur but have not yet read the whole thing. Perhaps that will be a project for next year. Hope your reading is going well!

A friend of mine had to read Le Morte d'Arthur in college and HATED it! She complained to me, "I just wish Arthur would hurry up and morte!" Glad you are enjoying it more than she did. :)
32AngelaB86
HA! If you go into it expecting it to be all about Arthur, you will definitely be disappointed. And it can be overwhelming (there are at least a hundred different characters to keep track of). I try to take it five chapters (about twenty pages) at a time, and that keeps it manageable.
34AngelaB86
Finally read the last book in the Camp Half-Blood/Camp Jupiter series, for my Q1 young adult category!
35AngelaB86
And added a biography to the list! Kind of dry, but when you're dealing with a subject with so few primary sources available, that's what happens.
36AngelaB86
Finished reading The Aeneid today! Only three books for February, but one I finished was The Aeneid, and I was chipping away at Le Morte d'Arthur. Onward to March!
39rabbitprincess
>36 AngelaB86: Congrats on finishing the Aeneid! Which translation did you read? I tried reading a Penguin Classics version but couldn't get through it. Maybe I shouldn't have tried reading it on the bus...
41rabbitprincess
I've heard good things about Fagles! Will have to pick up a copy.
42AngelaB86
What I look for in a translation is accessibility without being dumbed down, and I think Fagles found the balance. I'm going to read his translations of The Odyssey and The Iliad as well.
43AngelaB86
Took a little break from reading, but getting back to it now. Added my second quarter "random" book. I'm thinking of starting my next BFB book. No, I still haven't finished Le Morte d'Arthur. Not sure when I'll return to it, but the next one is calling my name. I'm also still reading my first quarter fantasy and religion/philosophy books.
44AngelaB86
Finished my Q1 sci fi/fantasy book. Think I'll finish Walden next, for my Q1 religion/philosophy read.
