The Master and Margarita...anyone?

Hello All: Here's one to start off with: I was wondering if anyone has read or heard about this book by Mikail Bulgakov. I'd like to know of "better" translations that might be out there before I order it for purchase. Ta! ~Cduncan

All I can tell you is that I read it many years ago, and it still is one of my favourite books.
Unfortunately I cannot be of great help, since I read it in Italian. Sorry!

I was introduced to this satire. From a very outspoken Russian Immigrant,who asked in the most polite manner ,that I have knowledge of this book prior to being considered dating material. LOL
Since you are obviously aware of the depth of this err masterpiece,you realize what an undertaking this proved to be.

I am reading it right now. It's an AMAZING book. Tell us how you like it! :-)

I recommend two translations, one by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, another by Diana Burgin and Katherine Tiernan O'Connor. The first gives a truer flavor of the Russian (I am told by Russian speakers), the second is more vivid English. Translations are always so personalized, there is no "best" translation. Avoid earlier translations that are based on censored versions.

I just checked out from the local library the translation by Diana Burgin, and it looks quite readable, but I am overloaded with other books to read, so I hope to get to it before I need to return it.

I compiled a list of 15 authors I would like to read, but which I have never had the time to read. Mikhail Bulgakov is one of those, but the book I was going to read is Heart of a Dog. I bought books by 3 other authors on my list, but if my library has a copy of The Master and Margarita I'll adjust my schedule. and read M&M first.

This was a great read. I read it years ago in college and did not realize it was still making an impression on new readers. The Heart of a Dog was also good, but nothing at all like this romp.
