error using power edit on the "from where" field

1al.vick
Ago 2, 2015, 2:29 pm

I just had a nice trip to a half price bookstore, and wanted to change the "from where" field. I used power edit to change all the books I bought (50 some! It was a fun day), but it says "There was a problem retrieving the data"
Or something like that. It flashes up so fast, I can't really read it all. Anyway, the from where field doesn't get updated.

If it were only a few books, I'd probably just change them one by one, but I got a lot.

What browser and OS are you using?

3al.vick
Ago 2, 2015, 4:25 pm

MAC OSX 10.9.5, and Safari

Tested OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and OS X Yosemite:

*Safari: confirmed, with no error message. Books are all de-selected with no changes made.
*Firefox: confirmed, with "There was a problem retrieving the data. Please try again." error message very quickly, before books are de-selected and no changes are made.
*Chrome: Power Edit "From where?" works!
*Opera: Power Edit "From where?" works!

Tested Windows 10:

*IE: Power Edit works.
*Firefox: bug confirmed.
*Chrome: Power Edit works.
*Opera: Power Edit works.

Inference: Bug seems to only be in Safari and Firefox, for the versions I've tested.

This is still happening to me. Any progress?

I'll let a developer chime in with the progress on this, but I was able to use Google Chrome and Opera browsers from my Mac for this Power Edit successfully, if you want to use a workaround til it's fixed??

This is still broken with Safari.

Thanks for bumping this. I just came here to see if it had been reported, myself.

Very, very annoying, after coming home from one of those $5-a-bag library sales. :)

Still broken in firefox 51.0.1 !

Sometimes it gives the error message, sometimes doesn't bother with even that.

Okay, I can't figure it out. I don't think it'll happen again until the scripts are fundamentally redone. I have therefore decided to remove mass "From Where?" editing as a feature. Sorry.

>20 timspalding: Did you re-add this feature? I was about to report it, but I saw this report first. For what it's worth, while I normally use Opera, and I assumed the problem was occurring in Opera too, I just tested it and it worked fine. It doesn't work in Firefox, still.

If I try it on Firefox, the error says something like, "There was an error retrieving the data. Please try again." It disappears very quickly.

Using: Firefox Quantum 57.0.4 64 bit and Opera 49.0.2725.64 (PGO) 64 bit. Windows 10, Dell.

I did not test anything on Edge or Chrome, both of which I avoid.

I've been experiencing a similar issue, also using Firefox 57.0.4/64bit on Windows 10. Haven't tried to use it in Chrome yet.

Currently having this problem in Chrome. Has there been any change? I see that this feature was meant to be removed, but since it's still available as an option, I wanted to check in.

It's not working for me, either (using Chrome.) No error message or anything, it just doesn't work. Sometimes it acts like it's working, but it doesn't actually have any effect.

Not fun having to manually change 80 books at once.

>25 saltmanz: ditto this comment.

I haven't done mass cataloging in a while but just ran into this problem today using Chrome on an iPad.

Since the feature is still available (not removed as mentioned upthread), it would be great to know whether there is any intention to fix and if not, remove the feature to reduce frustration.

Just ran into this today, assuming the option should either not be showing as available or should be functioning correctly at this point?

I've just run into this in Chrome. I can see the feature was intended to be removed but it's still there and still not working.

If this is still not enabled, it needs to be removed from the power editing UI, or somehow marked as disabled. I found this thread because I was confused that it wasn't working, and figured it was a bug.

Apparently it has been disabled but remains in the UI since 2017, though?

Still needs to be fixed or removed. I keep checking to see if either has happened.
So far, they haven't.

No update yet, I'm afraid. I'll star this within my threads and try to keep it up on the list for when we're redoing Your books for LT2, so it can hopefully be fixed or removed when the developers are working in the same region of the site. Sorry for the wait. Please feel free to "bump" it up every couple of months.

Bump.

Case in point: I need to correct a misspelled free-text entry on ninety (90) records. It's a piece of cake to edit a misspelling in tags; but ninety (90) free-text entries will take forever, if not two forevers, just to load ...

Sure would be nice if we could do them all at once!

yes, please fix this. It used to work fine, and has been broken for at least a year!

I don't see this happening anytime soon ("soon" = the next 6-12 months), I'm afraid. This will stay open, though, and I'll periodically remind timspalding about it. Sorry for the wait.
