Tagging

I've been developing a number of patterns in organizing my book collection. Genres get a tag (e.g. science fiction, fantasy); awards get a tag (e.g. Hugo Award); series get a tag (e.g. Annals of the Kencyrath); themes get a tag (e.g. alien FTL network). What other tagging schemes are people using?

I'll be creating some topics to track useful resources for my tagging patterns; go ahead and start other ones if you’ve got a technique I haven’t discovered yet.

I sometimes tag books by their setting (e.g. russia, san francisco), but I try to only do so if the setting gives a real flavor of the place. One big city is much like another if it’s just a backdrop with some token distinctive scenery.

One of my main strategies is to use the first tag for each book as a very general classification: eg literature, philosophy, history. I have no satisfactory way of organizing my LT catalog to reflect how I organize my books on my physical shelves, but if I sort by author and then sort by tags, putting this sort of tag first lines them up very closely.

I have a couple other strategies, but that's one that was pretty cunning for my own purposes :) Still developing a system so I can sort my books by almost any means I'd ever want to -- hoping to get some good recommendations from this group.

I use the tag ordering most in my rpg collection, where I want to see them grouped by game and then whether it’s a rulebook, sourcebook, location book, etc.

Opinicus: Color of cover (I color coded my library)

Do you actually sort them into groups of same colour? How do you find a specific book then? Red Shelf, somewhere in the middle?
I used to be the one in our family that was able to find a certain issue of GEO (the German National Geographic magazine) in our collection of 20 years -all green. I had a pretty good memory of the articles printed on the spine, so when I scanned the shelf a certain word would jump out and I'd know that the other article was nearby. It worked but an alphabetical index would have been easier...

I tag my fiction book with fiction for shelving purposes, the rest gets tagged according to topic (architecture, biography, environment, travel), again for shelving purposes. Other than that I try to add the main theme. And whether it is mine (my single biggest tag) or from the library or bookcrossing.
I am planning to get new living room furniture (including a huge bookshelf with glass doors, at least partly), so I tagged with a new sorting order in mind.

I use the tags to help me with readers advisory. Because I tag what I have read and not necessarily what I own, this very helpful. I use read-a-likes then another tag usually an author or title. I have tags for bibliographies I might create in the future lol or books that make you cry. I love tags in that it can totaly be anything you want it to be.

Can you create tags that are more than one word long ie "Cue Bidding"? Can you add lots of tags to the one book?
I am just starting to add books to my collection
Thanks
Cheers
Jill

>9 ToowongBridgeClub: Yes, you can. Using a comma in a tag will break it up though

Reopening a topic from 2006 is not the best way to ask a question. I also suggest not reading very old topics for hints on how to do things - a lot has changed on LT since then. Many of the things suggested above now can be more easily done with newer features. For example, we have 'Collections' now, and 'Other Call Number'.

>8 SheReads: Your question has me wondering if there's a character limit-- probably not, as at least one member has full reviews in the tag field-- or a limit on the number of tags. I've used more than twenty tags on a work. We certainly can add many words and many tags (separated by commas) to one work.

Happy tagging.
