I just chanced upon 2 copies of Dictionary of the Khazars: A Lexicon Novel in a 2nd-hand book store. One is the male edition, while the other is the female edition. Now, I know from wikipedia the 2 editions only differ in 1 place: a passage in a single paragraph. And I know the passages from both editions can be found on the net. However, the passage is "critical" (as in "important," I suppose.) Plus, the choice I’m going to make may very well affect my first experience with the novel in some ways.
So I guess I should not make the decision lightly.

So…should I buy the male edition because I’m a guy, or should I buy the female edition precisely because I am a guy?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

For some reasons, the male edition is more expensive than the female one.

I bought the male edition before I was aware of the options, and have mostly seen male editions in stores. I liked the book (still own it), but read about the difference too late for it to assess how the outcome might have changed, had I read the female. I read the changed passage, etc but it was too far out from my reading experience to really "shake" my understanding or perspective. (I have a pretty poor memory, so it may be that more than the impact of that single change on the experience for most users.)

All that said, I'd say I might choose the female, since it appears to be less common. (I"m male.) But not for any driving literary reason.

I'm very curious as to how others will respond!
