The Man in the High Castle

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but can't work out how to search group postings to check. Anyway, I was in the 'shop' today, and was introduced to the new FS edition of this (from Philip Dick for non-sci fi fans). Looks superb. Didn't note illustrator (sorry!), but struck me as similar style to Foundation trilogy.

The Dune volume looked fantastic - those illustrations are uneerie. Sadly, no Paradise Lost available yet.

Well this is unexpected news. I haven't read this, but would be tempted to purchase as a someone who finds Dick a very interesting writer to navigate. I already own this in my Library of America edition, so I'll likely wait and see.

They are on a roll publishing my favorite novels as it seems - Foundation, Dune, now this... :)

I so need to finish my Aubrey-Maturin so I can face the dilemma of what to covet next!

OMG, I did it, I took the plunge. I had to -- that Dune book is beyond beautiful.

This isn't a tempting launch of new volumes so much as a taunting avalanche. Too much for an addled addict to take in, mentally or spatially. Cruel even...

They have a lot of catching up to do in the science fiction realm, given their late start (though they have always published the more "literary" volumes, such as 1984 and Brave New World). I would expect the FS to continue to come out with classic volumes over the next few years - Maybe A Wrinkle in Time or Solaris, and I'm still holding out hope for A Canticle for Liebowitz.

Folio does this, I'm buying the book immediately.

I'm still waiting for a Charles Williams boxed set. Perhaps the new biography from OUP later this year will provide an inkling that I'm not alone in my interest.

Also, while not strictly science fiction, at least it is fiction involving famous scientists - I'd love to see the FS do Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle.

Centipede Press did a superb LE of Ender's Game recently, and I am hoping that they will complete the set so I don't have to start collecting it all over again with a FS set.

>20 wcarter: I know I'm in the FSD's area but I can also vouch for Centipede Press' edition of Ender's Game (though I was late to the game and got an unsigned copy). I've only ever collected Folio until I bought this edition of EG and anyone looking to branch out of Folio would do well to look at Centipede's offerings. Fantastic customer care too, my accompanying manuscript came with a few production faults and they replied back offering a replacement in less than a day from my email.

I may fall in to temptation and just get the unsigned Ender's Game, though. It is a fabulous book, though I have to admit that Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide probably are the Ender books which made the largest impression on me.

21-wongie: "anyone looking to branch out of Folio would do well to look at Centipede's offerings" - i was close to buy a signed of logans run around january, but my economy (and probably folio) stod in the way ... i clicked in to CP pretty often to get me a signed offer, but had to let go .. all off a sudden it was outsold (the signed version) - 200 copies, ripped away at no time - a little sore about that one .. some other time then :)

For a while, I was afraid I had acquired FAD, but luckily that appears not to be the case; rather, I suffer from the more generic BAD - I gave Centipede a try; Ender's Game, Logan's Run and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Can't wait for them to arrive - though given the shipping cost to Norway, I expect them to be hand-carried to my door by a trio of scantily clad fiery redheads.

Wow .. odderi .. this is Folio devotees here, but please update .. anything you want to share, really .. i`m curious .. three at once also, that`s somewhat brave!

*) I practically lived there while living in Bergen about a decade ago - had a small flat in Fjellgaten two minutes' walk away from DLK.

I saw this new volume at 44 Eagle St. this morning and fell in love with the frontispiece, a dark but sumptuous, richly coloured landscape featuring a grasshopper among chrysanthemums and other flowers, with a house in the background and a rising moon in a starry night sky—utterly gorgeous. The approximately eight (sorry forgot to count) other illustrations, spread individually throughout the volume but tending to cluster mostly in the first third and last quarter (so with a bit of a gap in the middle) have a sort of manga feel to them. They're very dynamic and vibrant in colour. The book is three quarters buckram with a pictorial paper front board, a blue-grey background featuring a towerblock with a Japanese temple on top and a red rising sun. The slipcase is blocked with the silver silhouette of a Japanese tower. I don't know the first thing about the work (I'd never even heard of it before this thread appeared, I'm still in my sci-fi infancy) but this Folio volume is enchanting. The mystery illustrator goes by the name 'Shotopop'! There's an introduction by Ursula K. Le Guin. If I'm to be tempted into more sci-fi I think this volume could suit me more than the weighty new Dune volume (depending on drasvola's ongoing review). Being a significantly smaller volume than Dune it should certainly be less demanding on the wallet. There's no price for it up yet but I'm told the volume will be available very soon.

If this goes on sale before the discount on Milton expires, I'm adding it to my order. I've wanted to read this book for ages, but have never felt the inclination to read it in paperback.
