And I knew this group would be appreciative.

I'm enthralled by science writer Theodore Gray's two books The Elements and now The Molecules, so of course I went and looked at his website. He is a mathemetician too, and he's gotten involved with a quilter, Nina Paley, writing software for her designs.

I'm going to try to post a gif showing a Quiltimation/Embroidermation project:

Their webpage is: http://palegraylabs.com/projects/quiltimation/

That is spectacular! I must go check out the website. Thank you for posting this!

I recently learned about The Elements because my husband bought the jigsaw puzzle based on its periodic table. Once we finished the puzzle (which was pretty challenging, btw!), I had to have the book. I suppose that will lead eventually to having to have The Molecules, too.

That is like nothing I've ever seen. Wow!

Now I'm going to have to look into this book The Elements.... ;-)

I bought The Elements for my husband's birthday. It is so hard to wait until June to give it to him!

My computer connection was slow today when I clicked on the thread and I was able to watch the images change. Have you gone to the page that shows the full quilt? Those seem to be the only panels actually in use. The brain does a marvelous job of filling in the betweens.

>2 MaggieO: I've been shot - by molecules! I have the elements book, now I want the molecules book. And that jigsaw puzzle.

My fella got me an 8000 piece puzzle of the last 2000 years' history. Here's another ! . I want to do it but where?

Thanks for the molecules :)

>1 2wonderY: I love the OP!

It reminds me of the pioneering work done by Eadweard Muybridge as explained here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sallie_Gardner_at_a_Gallop

I dunno. It's a Pinterest link, and I tracked it to a defunct bookstore in New South Wales. They still have a webpage:

I browse profile images on a regular basis and another picture really grabbed me today:

It looks quite painterly, so I researched it as well. It's by a National Geographic photographer Ivan Dimitrov.

In my search, I found one other photographer who has captured and posted on the same theme.

He's got a blog called In Search of Balance, and the photos are signed, but I can't find his name.

https://inasearchofbalance.com/2014/01/08/step-outside/

He tells about climbing the nearby mountain one night and catching the riches.

This is my favorite from his collection:

By coincidence, Theodore Gray's new book Reactions: An Illustrated Exploration of Elements, Molecules, and Change in the Universe was released yesterday. I'm going to start with the Elements book first, though.
