Most recent activity problem...

1Urquhart
Feb 17, 2015, 9:39 pm

My Profile page no longer shows my "Most recent activity" but rather books shown at random from my library.

I am not sure if there is something that I need to switch to have it revert back to Most recent activity that it was doing before.

Please advise and thanks.

Urquhart

You're not seeing this?

Editado: Feb 17, 2015, 10:00 pm

Boy, that was a fast response.

Yes, Tim, I am seeing that but they are not a record of my recent reads. Rather those books look as if they have been pulled at random from my library of a very long time ago.

If you go to
"Recently Added " screen you will be able to see 7 of my recently added bks.

With hopes for help..

You didn't rate those books recently? Did you upload recently?

5Urquhart
Editado: Feb 17, 2015, 10:17 pm

No, Tim, I did not do anything with them recently, or for that matter in years.

Thanks for the followup.

Hmmm.

Anyone else seeing this?

What do you think should be recent?

My "most recent activity" is indeed most recent. So, not a site-wide problem, at least.

Feb 17, 2015, 10:22 pm

Okay, I refreshed and it added a book. You don't think you rated a bunch of Robert Caro books recently?

10Urquhart
Feb 17, 2015, 10:23 pm

However, I just added
American General: The Life and Times of William Tecumseh Sherman by John S.D. Eisenhower
and that does show up as the first book in "Most recent activity"

11timspalding

Did you go a long, long time without adding, rating or reviewing anything?

Editado: Feb 17, 2015, 10:43 pm

Ouch! My bad!!! Embarrassment Alert.

Just remembered, I believe I might have switched those books from one Tag to another, ie, Biography to History.

So just maybe I created my problem and should apologize for the memory lapse.

Also, is it ok to post questions like this here or is there another room which is more appropriate?

Am signing off now but will check in tomorrow.

Thanks.

Ah. Hmm. No, it's fine.

Can you describe where you did it—how you did it? It shouldn't record those as new ratings.

Any time that I make any change to one of my books-such as a change in the star rating- in my Library then that causes that book title to appear in my Profile under
Most recent activity.

Does that answer your question?

Most grateful for your guidance as always.

Hi Urquhart,

If you just changed the star rating of the books that are showing up in your Most Recent Activity box, then yes, it makes sense that they would show up. But, from your post in >12 Urquhart:, it sounds like you just changed the tag and not the star rating?

What were the most recent changes you made to any of your books, were they Tags, Ratings, something else?? Thanks for the clarification. I'll try testing with my account in the meantime to see if I'm getting any unexpected behavior.

You are correct. When I went in to my Library and changed the Tags on about 7 different Biographies to History, then, that resulted in them also being put in the Recent Activity window.

All is fine with me now and I am grateful to you folks for your speedy responses.

I just did not understand how things worked.

ps: Dynamic Dirt Challenges look like fun.

No, changing tags isn't supposed to count as recent activity - only adding, rating, or reviewing.

Feb 18, 2015, 1:32 pm

I think it depends also on where you do it. Saving the edit book page probably counts if you have a review or rating even if you didn't change them.

19Urquhart
Feb 18, 2015, 1:43 pm

I think that is how I did it.

>18 MarthaJeanne: , >19 Urquhart:
It does not - I just tried that - added a tag to a book I had rated and reviewed earlier.

Adding/removing tags from the edit page of the book, from the box on the work page or from the catalog did not add it back to the recent activity...

My most recent activity shows two books for which I recently uploaded covers and tidied up some details via the edit page. However, I've done that to quite a few books recently, but the only ones that show under Recent Activity are ones that I had rated long ago, when I added them in 2007.

22AnnieMod
Feb 18, 2015, 8:18 pm

So maybe very old ratings dates are lost and when you edit one of those, it presumes it's new?

23PhaedraB
Feb 18, 2015, 10:08 pm

>22 AnnieMod: Hard to say, since I seldom rate books, so I don't know if it's the age of the rating or the fact that it's rated at all. All the other books I've been editing lately were all entered around the same time, FWIW.

24AnnieMod
Feb 18, 2015, 10:28 pm

>23 PhaedraB: It is not the rating itself - it did not push back into the list one of mine that was rated a few weeks ago... So either the age of the book record or the rating or something along these lines...

>17 lorax: is correct. if Tags were the only field that was updated in Your Books, the edits should not be put in Most Recent Activity.

Most Recent Activity *should* show the six most recent changes of: ratings you've given, books you've added, or books you've reviewed. If you haven't rated, added, or reviewed any books in a long time, the Most Recent Activity shouldn't change. - Unless changing certain details is considered as making a new entry? We'd have to see exactly what edits are being made to which books, and when.

This could either be a bug or just confusion about how the system calculates recent edits. We can certainly clarify what's going on for those seeing any discrepancies on their profiles - just note what you're seeing (screenshots will help) and any specific details of what recent edits you *did* make.

Both rated books were added and rated in 2007. What I changed a for them couple of days ago included tags, cover image, collections, size, comments and private comments, and may also have included changes to publication data and page count.

I've made similar changes to a ton of books in the last week, but only the two which were previously rated showed up in recent activity.

Feb 26, 2015, 1:13 pm

>26 PhaedraB: hmm. I'm wondering, if you changed covers, the system thinks of those books as different editions(?), with new information. Either way, the fact that they're being listed as recently "rated" isn't correct.

Basically, either the Recent Activity should probably show “edited” or something more accurate instead of “rated”, “reviewed”, “added” if that wasn’t the case. Or, the books shouldn’t be showing up in Recent Activity.

and with that, I'm being called for some Indian lunch :) will have to keep poking at this one!

28kristilabrie
Feb 26, 2015, 1:49 pm

and a response from Tim: edits to a book are (likely) counting as a new rating, even if it stayed the same. It's replacing the old rating with the new ones, even though it's the same.

29AnnieMod
Feb 26, 2015, 1:57 pm

>28 kristilabrie:

But it does not happen IF the rating is set not so long ago... I just tried again - edited a book that I had rated earlier this month - it did not go to the top of the recent activity list.

30kristilabrie
Feb 26, 2015, 2:01 pm

yeah, that's odd. OK, check back in a day to see if the book gets added to Recent Activity or not and report back? If it doesn't, then at least we're narrowing it down to when books *do* get bumped into Recent Activity.

31AnnieMod
Feb 26, 2015, 9:02 pm

Will do. And won't be adding new books in meantime. But in my experience if it was going to show up, it would be there already.

32AnnieMod
Feb 27, 2015, 7:06 pm

>30 kristilabrie:

Nope. Had not popped up. And I tried with my very first rating here from 2009 - saving it did not send it in the list either. So if it is time related - it is something earlier than this that cuts it.

33kristilabrie
Mar 19, 2015, 1:14 pm

>32 AnnieMod: when you say you tried with your first rating from 2009 - did you actually make any edits, or did you just click to edit, and then save? Wondering if that would make a difference, if so.

34AnnieMod
Mar 19, 2015, 1:15 pm

>33 kristilabrie:

Added a comment :) So there was a change - yes. But did not touch the review or rating.

35kristilabrie
Mar 19, 2015, 1:23 pm

Interesting...so yeah, if it's time that is the factor for updating Recent Activity, then it's somewhere between 2007-2009 (or 6-8 years) where new edits are saving as a new record/rating.

If anyone has a preference or suggestion on "fixing" this, let us know. I think maybe adding "edited" or "updated" to Recent Activity might work, if it's possible. Will have to tack it onto LT's RSIs of course. :)

Not sure if there's been any progress on this bug, but I just noticed it again.

Editing the title of a book I'd rated several years ago caused the book to appear in Most Recent Activity as having been 'rated'.
