Former Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, Michael Saward died February 1 at the age of 82. His books include The Anglican Church Today and Cracking the God Code.

Historian Martin Gilbert died February 3 at the age of 78. A few of his books include The First World War: A Complete History and Churchill: A Life.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Curator and Vermeer scholar Walter Liedtke was killed on February 3 in the Metro North train crash in New York. He was 69. His books include Vermeer and the Delft School and Dutch Paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The man who broke the color barrier in professional golf, Charlie Sifford died February 3 at the age of 92. His memoir was Just Let me Play: The Story of Charlie Sifford the First Black PGA Golfer.

Anti-apartheid author Andre Brink died February 6 at the age of 79. He wroteA Dry White Season.

Retired Chapel Hill basketball coach Dean Smith died February 7 at the age of 83. He wrote A Coach's Life.

Professional golfer Billy Casper died February 8 at the age of 83. His books include Billy Casper's "My Million Dollar Shots.", and Golf ShotMaking with Billy Casper.

A navy veteran who helped lead the effort to rebuild after 9/11, John C. Whitehead died February 7 at the age of 92. He wrote A Life in Leadership From D-Day to Ground Zero: An Autobiography.

Designer Kenji Ekuan, best known as the designer of the ever present Kikkoman soy sauce bottle has died at the age of 85 on February 7. He wrote The Aesthetics of the Japanese Lunchbox.

Nobel winning physicist Val L. Fitch died February 5 at the age of 91. He wrote Critical Problems in Physics.

Mississippi civil rights activist Anne Moody died February 5 at the age of 74. She wrote Coming of Age in Mississippi and Mr. Death: four Stories.

UNLV Hall of Fame basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian died February 11 at the age of 84. He wrote Runnin' Rebel, Tark: College Basketball's Winningest Coach and Winning Basketball Systems.

Algerian author Assia Djebar died February 6 at the age of 78. A few of her books include Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade and Women of Algiers in Their Apartment.

#11--Djebar--an excellent novelist. I'd been thinking for a while that she was going to win the Nobel prize for literature one day. Guess that's not going to happen.

CBS's 60 Minutes news correspondent Bob Simon was killed February 11 in a taxi crash in Manhattan. He was 73. His memoir of his time as a prisoner during the Iraqi War was called Forty Days.

Part of the new romantics pop movement, singer Steve Strange died February 12 at the age of 55. He wrote Blitzed!: The Autobiography of Steve Strange.

Former poet laureate of the United States Philip Levine died February 14 at the age of 89. One of the more popular of his many collections us What Work Is.

Writer and comedian best known as the announcer on Laugh In, Gary Owens died February 12 at the age of 80. He wrote How to Make a Million With Your Voice (or Lose Your Tonsils Trying) and The (What to do While You're Holding the) Phone Book.

Biographer Richard Meryman died February 5 at the age of 88. A few of his books include Mank, Andrew Wyeth: A Secret Life and Broken Promises, Mended Dreams.,

MIT professor of philosophy Irving Singer died February 1 at the age of 89. A few of his books include The Nature of Love and The Creation of Value.

Foreign correspondent Arnaud de Borchgrave died February 15 at the age of 88. His books include The Spike and Countdown in Miami.

U. S. Navy scientist who was involved in the development of undersea surveillance, John Pina Craven died February 12 at the age of 90. He wrote The Silent War: Cold War Battle Beneath the Sea.

Architect Jon A. Jerde died February 9 at the age of 75. He wrote Steven Ehrlich: (Contemporary World Architects).

Historical ecologist Oliver Rackham died February 12 at the age of 75. His books include The History of the Countryside, Woodlands and Trees and Woodland in the British Landscape.

Sitcom writer Harris Wittels died February 19 at the age of 30. He wrote Humblebrag: The Art of False Modesty.

Horror and fantasy writer Melanie Tem died February 9 at the age of 65. Of her many books she is best known for Wilding and Prodigal.

Retired foreign correspondent for the Telegraph, Richard Beeston died February 19 at the age of 88. He wrote and Looking for Trouble: The Life and Times of a Foreign Correspondent.

Jazz musician Clark Terry died February 21 at the age of 94. He wrote Clark: The Autobiography of Clark Terry.

Oxford rowing coach Daniel Topolski died February 21 at the age of 69. He wrote True Blue: The Story of the Oxford Boat Race Mutiny.

>23 varielle: For the record, the recently deceased Richard Beeston was father of another Richard Beeston, also a foreign correspondent but for The Times. Richard Beeston père was usually referred to as Dick Beeston and was the author of Looking for Trouble. Now That You Are Back was written by an unrelated Australian.

Richard Beeston fils predeceased his father - see post #9 here https://www.librarything.com/topic/153799 - and wrote no published books, at least none listed on LT.

Thank you. The bio on LT was a bit scrambled leading to the confusion. Someone had previously entered the death dates for the son. Hopefully it wasn't me. eta - Actually it probably was me. Also, I guess some splitting of the author might be called for. eta- It looks like somebody's already fixed it. :)

Welsh language campaigner Meredydd Evans died February 21 at the age of 95. He wrote Hela'r hen ganeuon.

Oceanic explorer Eugenie Clark died February 25 at the age of 92. She wrote The Desert Beneath the Sea with Ann McGovern and Lady with a Spear.

It is with a heavy heart that I report the multi-talented actor famed for playing Mr. Spock on Star Trek, Leonard Nimoy has gone to explore the undiscovered country on February 27 at the age of 83. He wrote I am Spock, I am Not Spock and You & I. :'(

The first black basketball player in the NBA, Earl Lloyd died February 26 at the age of 86. His memoir was Moonfixer: The Basketball Journey of Earl Lloyd.

Former president of the University of Notre Dame, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh died February 26 at the age of 97. He wrote God, Country, Notre Dame: The Autobiography of Theodore M. Hesburgh.

Former editor of Women's Wear Daily, John Fairchild died February 27 at the age of 87. He wrote Chic Savages.

Turkish novelist Yasar Kemal died February 28 at the age of 91. A few of his many books include Memed, My Hawk and They Burn the Thistles.

Counterculture theologian, Rev. Malcolm Boyd died February 27 at the age of 91. A few of his many books include Are You Running With me, Jesus? Prayers and Take off the Masks.

Law professor who helped create the field of legal ethics Monroe Freedman died February 26 at the age of 86. He wrote Understanding Lawyers' Ethics and Lawyers' Ethics in an Adversary System.

Romance novelist Beatrice Small died February 24 at the age of 77. Her many books include Skye O'Malley and The Kadin.

Journalist Sarah Foot died February 28 at the age of 75. Her books include My Grandfather Isaac Foot and Magical Places.

Environmentalist Patrick Whitefield died February 27 at the age of 66. His books include How to Make a Forest Garden and Permaculture in a Nutshell.

Former food editor for Essence magazine, Jonell Nash died February 27 at the age of 72. She wrote Low-Fat Soul and Essence Brings You Great Cooking.

Historian Ivan Roots died February 8 at the age of 93. His books include The Great Rebellion 1642-1660 and Conflicts in Tudor and Stuart England.

Archaeologist Sheppard Frere died February 26 at the age of 98. He wrote Britannia: History of Roman Britain.

Anglican Rev. Tom Devonshire Jones died February 27 at the age of 80. He wrote the Oxford Dictionary of Christian Art and Architecture.

American historian of French medieval history John W. Baldwin died February 8 at the age of 85. His books include The Scholastic Culture of the Middle Ages and The Government of Philip Augustus.
