Amy I'm intrigued by your little workaround here. Would be nice if something like this functionality existed within our own catalogues, of course, but meantime I'd be curious to hear any comments you have as you go along. Or not! -- since I imagine this this really was meant originally as a private thing.

>5 elenchus: elenchus, I'd be happy to share any thoughts as I go along! (I love the community aspect of LT!) I find with short stories I really like to jump around when I'm reading them -- I rarely read a collection or anthology all the way through. Yet when I finish the last story in one, I do want to get credit for the whole book, even if it's been a year or more in the reading! (I suspect a few of them will be several years in the reading....)

>5 elenchus: I've been keeping track of stories read in anthologies in my LT account for ages.

I enter each story as I read it, adding the anthology name to the publisher field (used to put it in comments) and the reading date. Then I can search by anthology name, and all the stories I've read come up.

I've also tried entering all the stories in the anthology and then marking the ones that I read as I went along. I got too obsessive about it and was spending more time adding anthology contents than I was reading so I stopped. But that's another way to do it.

19elenchus
Abr 8, 2015, 10:18 am

Yeah, the obsessive part is what I'm worried about for myself. Already too little time to read, I don't want to spend much of it cataloguing. Eventually, I think LT will have almost any story I want, entered by another user. Think it'll be pretty great then.

Whereas I love the cataloging part. ;-) But yes, it's time-consuming. I used to be a cataloging librarian, but ended up moving into reference. I always missed cataloging after that!

Abr 8, 2015, 3:39 pm

I emphathise you and aulsmith the time spent cataloguing, I actually enjoy that quite a bit! I've just had to make some hard choices, and realised I like reading more.

I really like what you've done here. I have tons of anthologies, and many in various stages of completion. I've also kind of gotten away from reading anthologies in the last year, but I've always liked them and given I have 248 books in my collection tagged anthology, I think I may steal your idea here and start a thread like this.

I'm very curious about your process for choosing which stories to read in the anthologies. I especially notice that sometimes you have read a couple from the same anthology on the same day, but they don't appear to be consecutive in the book? (I'm assuming they're listed in page order.) If you don't start at the beginning, and you don't just read favorite authors, how do you select?

I read my anthologies (and all books really) from beginning to end, including the copyright page. I don't feel like it's a book unless it begins with the title and copyright page.

>49 macsbrains:

Yes, the stories from the anthologies are listed in page order. I almost never read a story or collection in order, although I'm determined to do so for Clarkesworld Year Seven and the Hannu Rajaniemi collection. Usually, I look at the table of contents and either 1) see if any name there excites me (Ken Liu, Caroline Yoachim, Ted Chiang, or a friend of mine who has a story out); or 2) look for something that seems about the right length of the amount of time I have (such as a lunch break). Sometimes it's based on mood.

In other words, it's pretty haphazard, and it would bother me more except for keeping track of them here on LibraryThing, which irrationally makes me feel better about it because at least I'll be able to see if/when I've finished all the stories in one book. Although I've been finding it hard to find anthologies that are so strong I feel compelled to read all the stories.

Sorry, I can see where this would drive other people nuts!

Well, my intentions to read Clarkesworld Year Seven in order just went down the tubes. It didn't help that I wasn't crazy about 3 1/2 of the first 4 stories in the book. In sampling opening paragraphs of later stories, I disliked what felt to me to be "affected" story styles for a bunch of them.

I think I'm just in a bad mood today.

This workaround seems like a lot of work to me... Have you ever thought of using a book tracking app? I think it would make your life easier :) For example I use Bookly; not only it makes tracking books easier, but I also get reports on my performance so I know how fast I'm reading or how long it takes me to finish a book.
