I have been reviewing Booklist's, PW's, School library journal's best books and editor's picks and am not sure what to think about them. Any thoughts on these lists or the books you think were the best in 2014? Or even just your favorites.

So, is We Were Liars really the best book of 2014?

My top books were:

Mortal Heart by Robin LaFever
Cress by Marissa Meyer
Hangman's Revolution by Eoin Colfer
Earth Girl trilogy by Janet Edwards (a friend lent me the last one Earth Flight (UK pub))
Sylo trilogy by D.J. MacHale

Obviously, I tend toward scifi/fantasy.

So, what were your favorites of 2014.

I liked We Were Liars, but I didn't think it lived up to the hype. I was similarly underwhelmed by What We Hide, which was the only other 2014 YA release I read.

I have Laurie Halse Anderson's book on my TBR list, as I've enjoyed most of her past novels immensely, but few of the others on this year's list hold much appeal for me.

I enjoyed Mortal Heart, but I didn't like it quite as much as its predecessor, Dark Triumph. I could appreciate what the author did with We Were Liars, but it was never a book I really enjoyed. It was rather depressing.

I adored Cress and it's probably been my favorite of the Lunar Chronicles books so far. I feel like I should be excited for Fairest, but I'm not really a fan of books about villains or characters who will become villains. I have to be able to find something of merit in the characters I read about, and I'm not sure if I can do that about Queen Levana. I also kind of hate that its release has pushed back the release of Winter, mostly because I'm horribly impatient when it comes to waiting for books I really want to read.

The Kiss of Deception and The Winner's Curse were probably my favorite series starters, and reading Blue Lily, Lily Blue was like hanging out with old friends. I'm in love with Maggie Stiefvater's writing style.

The Caller was an excellent conclusion to Juliet Marillier's Shadowfell trilogy, which is saying something, since so many final books I've read here lately have been disappointing (or I haven't even bothered to read).

Traitor's Blade by Sebastien de Castell is an adult book, but I feel like it has great crossover appeal. It made me feel all the feels and I loved the main characters, especially Falcio. He's just so honorable and inspiring that you can't help but root for him, no matter how hopeless his circumstances seem.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a book that many have mistakenly labelled as a YA book, but I'd say it's more of an adult book. I can see a lot of teens enjoying it, though, if they can get past the realistic depictions of violence (Brown pulls no punches in that department, but it never seems gratuitous). I had the pleasure of reading the sequel, Golden Son, and it was even better than Red Rising. Reading it was one huge adrenaline rush, which kind of stressed me out, to be honest, but it was so worth it.

I haven't read many books published this year. Of young adult, I think Blue Lily, Lily Blue is the only one. I really loved it and would have to agree with Cailiosa's opinion on the writing style.

I really enjoyed Love and other Variables
Anyone who liked The Fault in our Stars which I didn't like that much will really enjoy this one.
