Ack, only one month left to go in the 2014 Category Challenge! I'm starting December with a book to get me in the holiday spirit, The Twelve Clues of Christmas by Rhys Bowen. What are you reading?

Hard to believe we are entering the last month of the year! I am also reading one book to get me in the Christmas mood, Snowfall in Burracombe by Lilian Harry. It's part of a series about a small British village and this one is set in December of 1953. I am also reading The Shade of the Moon by Susan Beth Pfeffer, the fourth in her post-apocalyptic series.

I'm reading The Body in the Sleigh which is Christmassy, and I am next at the library for Hope to Die and The Girl Next Door. I'm also reading Portrait in Death and Imitation in Death.

My other holiday type book will be The Man With a Load of Mischief.

I hope I can fit all of my reading I want to do in with work and holiday shopping. I'm starting to freak out that it's December 1st!

The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino

Almost finished Comfort and Joy by India Knight a Christmassy book.

About to start: We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo GeographyCAT; and One Woman's Arctic by Sheila Burnford RandomCAT.

And, I just received an ER book Descent by Tim Johnston.

I am reading Mapp and Lucia and In the Kingdom of Ice by Hampton Sides, a new book about polar exploration (north pole) in the 1880s. I put aside Doctor Zhivago because it was just too heavy for my mood, but hope to get back to it soon. I also just got Birds of a Feather, the second book in the Maisie Dobbs series from the library.

Too much at once, but they are all good!

Rereading Death at Sandringham House for the MysteryCAT and enjoying it very much.

I'm reading The Magician King by Lev Grossman for this month's RandomCAT.

I'm reading An Irish Country Christmas by Patrick Taylor and also Disco for the Departed by Colin Cotterill. I also have 2 books coming from the library - A Christmas Visitor by Anne Perry and Rueful Death by Susan Wiitig Albert for the Mystery Cat.

I'm still working on Shirley from last month. I've also started Silent Night: The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce. I'm listening to The World of O. Henry, a collection that includes several holiday stories. I'm next on the waiting list for the audio of The Long Way Home.

I'm also reading An Irish Country Christmas by Patrick Taylor next as soon as I finish One Plus One by Jojo Moyes

Finished a couple of books recently, so now I'm reading Birds of a Feather, part of the Maisie Dobbs mystery series, and the excellent A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley.

I'm about to start The Book of Chameleons for December GeoCAT and am listening to Over Sea, Under Stone, which I for some reason never read as a kid. Or did I? I feel like some parts are familiar, but I'm not sure if I'm making it up. :)

Wrestling with a bunch of library books. Still reading Red or Dead, by David Peace, which will be on its second renewal, and I also started The Englishman's Daughter, by Ben Macintyre, for my Cabin Pressure category. Sadly, I think this category will not be completed, but I will have given it a jolly good try.

Dic 7, 2014, 10:09 pm

I finally finished Shirley this afternoon. I'm still working on Silent Night: The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce and should finish it up this week. I'm getting ready to start Dead at Daybreak for the GeoCAT. I'm listening to A Christmas Odyssey by Anne Perry and I have the latest Louise Penny, The Long Way Home, ready to go after that.

Dic 8, 2014, 7:01 am

I'm working on Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X Stork and Rueful Death by Susan Wittig Alberta. And then I'll tackle The Headhunter's Daughter by Tamar Myers and An Unfinished Score by Elise Blackwell and then I'll have reached my goal for this year.

Dic 8, 2014, 9:11 am

I read The Little Prince for the first time over the weekend, and now I'm reading No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe.

Dic 8, 2014, 9:26 am

I've read Hyperbole and a Half and The Martian, and am now reading Cold Comfort Farm, which I think will fulfill the RandomCAT. I have plans to read Revival next. I don't think I'm going to get a cozy mystery in this month, as I abandoned The Circular Staircase and that was the only one I had on my TBR.

The Lost World, by Arthur Conan Doyle, earned a last-minute reprieve from being returned to the library unread. I took it along on my morning commute, intending to return it on my way home from work, but now I have to keep reading!

I finally finished the challenge today with December's RandomCAT One Woman's Arctic by Sheila Burnford. An excellent choice, I enjoyed it a lot.

21RidgewayGirl
Dic 9, 2014, 4:17 am

I'm still reading er ist wieder da (Look Who's Back) by Timur Vermes, which is slow going because of my German skills (for which this book is a stretch, with lots in dialect or local accents). And I'm reading The Last Dead Girl by Harry Dolan, which I should not be, as it doesn't fit my challenge for which I only have four books to go and which I could finish if I were to concentrate on those books that actually fit.

Dic 9, 2014, 10:53 am

>21 RidgewayGirl: Good for you, your German skills must be improving at a tremendous rate. Are you still in Munich?

23LittleTaiko
Dic 10, 2014, 9:47 pm

>21 RidgewayGirl: - Have you read the other books in the series? I really liked the first two and put The Last Dead Girl on my Christmas list. Hope I get it!

24DeltaQueen50
Dic 10, 2014, 9:57 pm

I am reading Devil's Peak by Deon Meyer which is told from three separate viewpoints and took me awhile to get into, but I am in it now and it's a page turner. Also I am just about to start The Paris Winter by Imogen Robertson.

25cbl_tn
Dic 10, 2014, 10:00 pm

I'm also reading Deon Meyer - Dead at Daybreak. I'm about 50 pages in and it seems promising so far. I'm listening to The Long Way Home by Louise Penny.

26RidgewayGirl
Dic 11, 2014, 4:20 am

>23 LittleTaiko: Yes, I really liked the first two. This one is a stronger story, but the literary bits are absent, since he's not the editor of a mystery magazine yet.

27RidgewayGirl
Dic 11, 2014, 4:53 am

>22 VivienneR: Yes, I'm still in Munich, but I'm tremendously lazy about my German. I need to take a class and read more.

28VivienneR

I could say the same thing about my French.

I'm a polygamist reader. The plots stay clear while I'm reading, but given time become a bit muddled.

30RidgewayGirl
Dic 11, 2014, 11:34 am

Yep, I'm not one for monogamy, either.

31sturlington
Dic 11, 2014, 12:08 pm

>29 VivienneR: Of all those, I think the one that best describes me is Altruist. The problem is that I don't tend to like the books that everyone else likes. :-)

32VivienneR
Dic 11, 2014, 12:18 pm

Shannon, I used to be an Altruist too, but was spectacularly unsuccessful. I spent weeks trying to convince a friend that she would like Spencer Quinn's Chet and Bernie series. At last it worked and now the library has a rush of holds for all her other friends. Obviously she has more success as an Altruist.

33cbl_tn
Dic 11, 2014, 12:20 pm

I think I'm an altruistic polygamist.

34DeltaQueen50
Dic 11, 2014, 12:48 pm

I seem to be a extroverted, polygamist, altruist reader. Quite a mouthful and pretty much opposite of my basic character!

35lsh63
Editado: Dic 11, 2014, 12:55 pm

I'm an altruistic polygamist, with a touch of neurotic because I am easily distracted with other books in conjunction with my mood I suppose.

Case in point, I thought I would be reading light books around this time of the year, nope, I find myself drawn to Mr. Rebus right now, after just finishing The Pale Criminal and A German Requiem.

36christina_reads
Dic 11, 2014, 2:03 pm

I'm definitely a monogamist! But there are bits of extrovert, introvert, and altruist in there too.

37dudes22
Dic 11, 2014, 4:20 pm

I too am an altruistic polygamist.

38LittleTaiko
Dic 11, 2014, 6:12 pm

I'm an extroverted polygamist reader which not even close to how I am in real life.

39March-Hare
Dic 11, 2014, 6:57 pm

Neurotic introverted monogamist (expect for identifying with the characters, and not so much plot pondering since I mostly read non-fiction)

40rabbitprincess
Dic 11, 2014, 8:51 pm

Haha reading is the only time I'm a polygamist! I tried reading only one book at a time once and it was physically painful. Had to throw another one into the mix. I am probably more extroverted than introverted, in the sense that I read fairly widely and don't really spend a lot of time analyzing plots, and right now I am a bit neurotic in that I keep switching between books.

Great picture! Thanks for sharing :)

41-Eva-
Dic 11, 2014, 11:11 pm

I think I'm all of those, it just depends on the day which one I gravitate towards more. Right now I'm leaning more toward the neurotic, but that's because real life keeps interrupting, and I have a feeling it'll stay that way until the holiday are over. :)

Dic 12, 2014, 2:40 pm

Finished No Longer at Ease on my lunch break, so I'll start The Devil in Music by Kate Ross when I get home tonight! :)

Dic 17, 2014, 2:08 pm

Moving on to Miracle and Other Christmas Stories by Connie Willis -- hoping to finish in time for Christmas! :)

44LittleTaiko
Dic 17, 2014, 5:34 pm

Bound and determined to finish Netherland by Joseph O'Neill - 70% complete. Then I only need to read Moon Tiger and Death of a Red Heroine for the Random CAT and Alpha KIT respectively.

45DeltaQueen50
Dic 17, 2014, 6:47 pm

I am really enjoying Mad Mouse by Chris Grabenstein, the second book in his John Ceepak series. I am also reading a light-hearted Regency Romance called The Frog Earl by Carola Dunn.

46cbl_tn
Dic 17, 2014, 7:41 pm

I am having fun with To Say Nothing of the Dog and the audio of Sugar Cookie Murder.

47rabbitprincess
Dic 17, 2014, 8:58 pm

Still gamely (har!) slogging my way through Red or Dead, by David Peace, and on the bus I've just started The Far Side of the Dollar by Ross Macdonald as my Christmas group read. (It was a Christmas present from last year that I hadn't read yet.)

48dudes22
Dic 18, 2014, 5:32 am

I'm on my last book to complete my challenge An Unfinished Score by Elise Blackwell for the Random Cat.

49-Eva-
Dic 20, 2014, 10:23 pm

I've started The Book of Chameleons and am enjoying the very interesting narrator. Too much real life stuff going on, though, so it'll take me a little while to finish.

50DeltaQueen50
Dic 23, 2014, 1:53 am

I have returned to the YA series by L.A. Meyer with The Curse of the Blue Tattoo. I am not finding this one quite as enjoyable as the first book, but will probably still continue on with the series.

I am about to start a Christmas read, Comfort & Joy which I am looking forward to.
