I'm reading a fantastic coverage of this war by the Canadian author Pierre Berton (The Invasion of Canada and Flames Across the Border). He takes a 'popularized history' approach in all of his work that I'm a huge fan of, never dry and always engaging.

I've looked around but can't readily find an American author on the same topic who's as highly recommended. Any suggestions?

Try Amateurs to Arms by John Elting.

I haven't read Elting's book in a while but as I recall it's fairly good. Walter Borneman has also written a book on the War of 1812; I haven't read it but have read a couple of his other military history books which are recommendable.

Finally, to go with Canadian and American perspectives, there is the British point of view--try 1812: War with America by Jon Latimer.
