Begging your indulgence: will you tolerate the presence of a foreigner long enough for me to ask a question? I'm an American, New England born but a longtime resident of Northern California (and a confessed lifelong Anglophile).

In 1998 or thereabouts I made a brief visit to Scotland with a group. I spent most of my time in Edinburgh but also visited Glasgow and St. Andrews, as well as several small towns that could not have been the places I'm trying to recall.

During a guided portion of the trip, I visited a museum or gallery that was open to visitors and that housed a collection of paintings. Somewhere near the entrance I saw two paintings that I am now trying to recall. Both were fairly large, in the neighborhood of 4 feet by 6 feet (or 6 by 4).

One was a somewhat romanticized but generally realistic view of field laborers, men and women both, on their way home at the end of the day. I recall three or four prominent figures in the foreground, the women attired in long skirts, probably carrying baskets and probably wearing aprons and some sort of kerchiefs. They were walking along a dirt road with fields in the background. The style was very approximately like that of Corot.

Nearby was a portrait of a very handsome man, who I believe was a doctor, probably in his thirties or forties, done in a style that I'm recalling as similar to that of Rembrandt Peale in this portrait of Thomas Jefferson. I seem to see him seated, holding a pair of spectacles, and perhaps having some books nearby. Again, it was probably 18th century.

I can't remember much more than this, but I would like to figure out where I saw them and what they were. I know I visited the Scottish National Gallery, but I don't think they were there. I think it was a much smaller collection.

If this rings any bell with you, please let me know what you think.

In any case, I'll wait a little and then take my leave with thanks for your hospitality.
