Announcing the August/September 2014, Labor Day Weekend (US) ReadaThing
We'll be reading from Thursday August 28 to Tuesday September 2, depending on your location. Remember, this is a ReadaThing, not a readathon, so no one needs to try to read for four full days . . . don't stress yourself! An hour or so, one or more times during the weekend, is fine. More is for if you want/need an excuse to do a lot of reading :)
As has been the case for many ReadaThings, the reference start time is midnight UTC - in this case, the midnight between Thursday and Friday. That's 2 pm Thursday in Hawaii, 5 pm in the western US, 8 pm in the eastern US, 1 am Friday in London, 2 am in much of Europe, 4 am in Moscow, and 10 am in Sydney.

If you want to join in the read, but aren't sure WHEN you can read, or can't plan, there is the "No Timeline" readers signup on the wikipage after the timeline. (The wiki also includes links to time zone converters to find the times in your hometown. :)

What is ReadaThing?

The best analogy is that RaT is like a relay race where a runner hands a baton off to the next runner. Some of the readers sign up for specific reading times & some don't, but there is always someone in the group reading somewhere in the world.
There are several major threads for the ReadaThing: this announcement/information thread, the "what I will/may be reading" thread, and the Log Book & reviews/reports thread.
There is a wikipage for the signups (see above). There will not be a wikipage for the books (unless someone wants to set one up), please use Touchstones in the "What I will/may be reading" and the "Log Book" threads to provide a record of all the books read during the RaT.

"No Timeline" Readers
After the timeline on the wiki-signup page, there is an area where you can sign up for the "No Timeline" reading. If you sign up there, it's nice if you can put in your actual reading hours in the timeline, after the fact (that's what I (try to) do).

There is no overall theme for this ReadaThing. If you have a theme you'd like to follow, list it here or in the What Will You Be Reading? thread; if you like someone's theme, say you'll be following it and list which of your books will belong to the theme. This is not required; you can read themeless, read a book and decide afterward it fits one or more themes (multi-theme books are fun!), or choose a book because it fits a theme you'd like to pick up. Part of the fun is stretching themes to fit the books you want to read, too. Anything works - from "rereading old favorites" to "books featuring a female vampire" to "books with yellow covers" - have fun!

Ooh, this sounds neat. I found it through the newsletter thing (you'll probably be getting a lot of those, I bet). I'm still new to LibraryThing, but I'm all for the dive-in-the-deep-end approach. I added myself to the no timeline list, because I never know when I'll be reading. This should be fun!

I signed up for one slot, but of course I'll read more than that. Will see later if I want to go "no timeline" for the rest, or if I'll put my name down for more timeslots.

Many people sign up for a few slots as well as "No Timeline" and then just fill in the other slots corresponding to when they actually read. I also sometimes check for gaps in the timeline once the RaT is going and then try to read at those times . . . I love it when at the end we can look at the timeline and all the slots were filled :)
The main thing is to have fun, do as much reading as makes you happy and fits in your schedule, and share the experience with others!

When the ReadAThing starts, if we're reading during a time slot but we signed up for no timeline, are we allowed to put our name in that time slot, as long as we read during the entire hour?

>14 VampAmber: absolutely. Reading for less than an hour or across hours (e.g. From 10.30-11.30) is also allowed (this is meant to be about having fun reading :) although filling in the timeline gets a bit trickier. Don't worry - I'm bound to set a bad example and do it ;)

When we do the readings, what do we read into and listen on? How do others listen to the readings?

>19 drteve: a ReadaThing is a group read where we each read (privately) whatever we choose (a book, an ebook, an audiobook) in relay - with the aim of having someone, somewhere around the globe, reading at any given time for the full duration of the event. We make a note of when we plan to read (and when we actually read) in the Wiki, and we will be opening threads tomorrow to discuss the books we read.
We don't record our readings for others to listen to - although that's a really interesting idea, it would be a completely new event!

I am not familiar with WIKI and have no idea how to sign up for slots but I will be reading as much as possible as I always do.

It's as simple as editing your name in against the time slots you fancy reading in - it's absolutely fine for lots of us to be reading at once, so there's no rules about when you can and can't read :)

When we say 'record', we only mean in the sense of 'make a note of' - i.e. log the time when you were reading to show who was reading when around the world.

BTW, if you enjoy audiobooks and/or reading out loud, you might want to check out Librivox.org . . . they record public domain books and make them available for download. I'm currently listening to Nicholas Nickleby from them.
