Economics professor Sir Alan Peacock died August 2 at the age of 92. He wrote The Economic Theory of Fiscal Policy and a memoir Defying Decrepitude.

Wounded in the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, James S. Brady lived on to lead the fight for gun control in the U.S. Mr. Brady died August 4 at the age of 73. He wrote Ronald Reagan: A Man True to His Word.

Actress Lauren Bacall died August 12 at the age of 89. Her memoir was called Lauren Bacall: By Myself. :'( "You know how to whistle, don't you?" My favorite line, what great delivery.

I have been afkb for awhile, and had not heard about Lauren Bacall. One of those ladies who was both a lady and a broad. And she wore the term "tough broad" like a badge of honor. I mourn her loss. I truly believe she and Bogy are exchanging smoldering looks as we speak.
