Economics professor Sir Alan Peacock died August 2 at the age of 92. He wrote The Economic Theory of Fiscal Policy and a memoir Defying Decrepitude.

Wounded in the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, James S. Brady lived on to lead the fight for gun control in the U.S. Mr. Brady died August 4 at the age of 73. He wrote Ronald Reagan: A Man True to His Word.

Novelist Billie Letts died August 2 at the age of 76. She wrote Where the Heart Is and The Honk and Holler Opening Soon.

Journalist who specialized in spies and spying Chapman Pincher died onAugust 5 at the age of 100. His better known books include Their Trade is Treachery and Too Secret Too Long.

Suspense novelist Dorothy Salisbury died August 3 at the age of 98. A few of her books include A Death in the Life, A Gentleman Called and A Gentle Murderer.

Actress Lauren Bacall died August 12 at the age of 89. Her memoir was called Lauren Bacall: By Myself. :'( "You know how to whistle, don't you?" My favorite line, what great delivery.

I have been afkb for awhile, and had not heard about Lauren Bacall. One of those ladies who was both a lady and a broad. And she wore the term "tough broad" like a badge of honor. I mourn her loss. I truly believe she and Bogy are exchanging smoldering looks as we speak.

Mathematician Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw died August 10 at the age of 101. She wrote a memoir To Talk of Many Things: An Autobiography as well as First Citizen, Lord Mayor's Party and Magic Squares of Order Four.

Educator Dr. Earl Cheit died August 2 at the age of 87. He wrote Business Establishment.

Author and columnist Leonard Fein died August 14 at the age of 80. A few of his books include Where are We: The Inner Life of America's Jews and Against the Dying of the Light: A Father's Journey Through Loss.

Yogi B.K.S. Iyengar died August 20 at the age of 95. His books include Light on Yoga, Light on Life and Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health.

Journalist Candida Lycett Green died August 19 at the age of 71. Her books include Unwrecked England, England: Travels through an Unwrecked Landscape and Betjeman's Britain.

Sir Richard Attenborough died August 24 at the age of 90. His autobiography was called Entirely Up to You, Darling.

Poetess Simin Behbahani, known as the Lioness of Iran, died August 19 at the age of 87. Her works include A Cup of Sin: Selected Poems and Maybe It's the Messiah Shayad Ke-masee Hast.

Journalist Robert Sherrill died August 19 at the age of 89. A few of his books include Gothic Politics in the Deep South and Why They Call it Politics.

Founder of Phoenix University, John G. Sperling died August 22 at the age of 93. He wrote Rebel with a Cause: The Entrepreneur Who Created the University of Phoenix.

Psychiatrist Jack Dominian has died at the age of 84. His books include Marital Breakdown, Marriage, Faith and Love and Make or Break: Introduction to Marriage Counselling.

Dr. Mervyn Susser died August 14 at the age of 92. He wrote Causal Thinking in the Health Sciences and Sociology in Medicine.

Financial journalist Elizabeth M. Fowler died August 11 at the age of 95. She wrote How to Manage Your Money: A Woman's Guide to Investing and 90 Days to Fortune.

Crime novelist Jeremiah Healy died August 14 at the age of 66. A few of his books include Blunt Darts, Staked Goat, Rescue and So Like Sleep.

Art history scholar David Rosand died August 8 at the age of 75. A couple of his books include Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice and Painting in Sixteenth-Century Venice.

Biographer Penelope Niven died August 28 at the age of 75. Her books include Carl Sandburg: A Biography and Voices and Silences.

British Major-General Dare Wilson died August 15 at the age of 95. He wrote Tempting the Fates: A Memoir of Service in the Second World War, Palestine, Korea, Kenya and Aden and With 6th Airborne Division in Palestine 1945-48.

Photographer Lida Moser died August 11 at the age of 93. Her books include Grants in Photography: How to Get them and Amphoto Guide to Special Effects.

Author Charles Bowden died August 30 at the age of 69. His many books include Down by the River: Drugs, Money, Murder and Family and Murder City: Ciudad Juarez and the Global Economy's New Killing Fields.

Historian Michael B. Katz died August 23 at the age of 75. His books include In the Shadow of the Poor House: A Social History of Welfare in America and The Undeserving Poor.

Former presidential speech writer Joseph Persico died August 30 at the age of 84. His books include Roosevelt's Secret War, Nuremberg: Infamy on Trial and a former early reviewer book Franklin and Lucy.

Stan Goldberg drew the Archie Comics for more than 40 years. He died August 31 at the age of 82. See his work in Archie's Double Digest #179.

Biographer Herbert R. Lottman died August 27 at the age of 87. His books include Albert Camus: A Biography and Man Ray's Montparnasse.

Belgian writer Simon Leys nee Pierre Ryckmans, who fell afoul of the Chinese government, died on August 11 at the age of 78. His books include Chinese Shadows and The Death of Napoleon.

Publisher David St. John Thomas died August 18 at the age of 84. His books include Improving Your Memory (Essential Life Skills) and The Country Railway.
