PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING SPAM
Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:
-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.
-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.
Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors: http://www.librarything.com/about_authors.php
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85810
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page: http://www.librarything.com/spam_works.php
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.
Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

Shouldn't spam profile comments left by spammers also go away when spammers do? This spammer was probably suspended a while ago, so maybe things didn't work that way before. Do they now?
Anyhow, here's the already gone spammer:
https://www.librarything.com/profile/TOMASHOBESHOUSE
And here's the legacy library where he left a spam link (DON'T flag this profile): https://www.librarything.com/profile/JosephPriestley. Could staff delete the spam comment?

Since they can permanently ban members, I'd have thought they could block the source machine address, unless userfN is bouncing geographically.

>22 MarthaJeanne: I don't know much about spamming, but isn't it likely that these posters are working for some sort of SEO outfit (probably from overseas) and getting paid a pittance for the posts they manage to place and/or the hits they generate? They're probably not selling anything themselves, and they probably don't care if they're coherent or readable as long as they register long enough to score.
28MarthaJeanne
That was spam for an Indian moving company, and the text may have been an attempt to avoid using words that screening software would catch, but the result was quite ridiculous. There were several not quite appropriate synonyms for moving, but not the standard ones.

Some cases for staff to deal with (DON'T flag these profiles):
There's a bunch of authors and publishers promoting their books via events on the LT Local page for Amazon. The "events" are book release dates, or free Kindle offers, or just simple ads to buy the book on Amazon. Surely that's all against the TOC and not what Local events are for. Most or all are LT Authors.

Hmm. Weird. Nobody is going to see it. Amazon isn't anywhere people are. (I think they're putting the location in the geographic center of the US, because the address only has a country.)
I propose we come up with a little note for them, and post it to their profiles. What do you think?

43MarthaJeanne
The fact that it has taken so long for this to be reported shows that you're right about people not seeing it. But they certainly do need to be told even a year after the fact that this is not acceptable.
44razzamajazz
Should these author members be told that such "promotions" were allowed?
49Lyndatrue
>42 timspalding: Since it still seems to be ongoing, and it's mostly been populated by what I'd call hit-and-run authors (the type that even review their own books), I'd prefer to delete the venue, with a note to the original creator (who seems like an otherwise nice person) to please not recreate it.
I'd say that most of the authors up there are ones who will never see your little note.
What's weird is that an event on that venue is still showing, even though it's over. That's from the author on the first link (who was also a reviewer for his own book).
https://www.librarything.com/profile/w.e.kaiyoetay
Venues should be real places.

>49 Lyndatrue: If venues should be real places, why is there an option for "Online and other non-places" as a venue type?
51Lyndatrue
>50 lesmel: Dunno. The only place I've seen that was an online venue is the one Tim had pointed out. Not saying there aren't others, but it does seem to defeat the idea of "Local" in that case.
Maybe Tim will start a thread elsewhere (spam fighting probably doesn't need this segue), and explain what was originally intended by the "Online and other non-places" venue type.

Maybe online venues should not have events. Interviews and such can have links on the author page. they can usually be viewed for a longer period of time.

They've been here since Sept of 2013, only entered one book in their library... Kinda curious if they got hacked.
67.Monkey.
The book was entered now, and doesn't have any real info. Why would someone hack an empty account when they could simply make one?
68Lyndatrue
>67 .Monkey.: I don't think this is an account that's been hacked. I'd bet money that it's been used, off and on, and that it just now became noticeable. The book isn't even a real book (it's a combination of two random titles).

Almost any other group I'd have flagged it, too.

Before I start, yes I am doing this back-to-front. And yes, I know I should have probably posted this here first. And no, I'm not complaining that this was voted down.
Anyway, earlier today I proposed http://www.librarything.com/work/14995454 as a spam work, and it got voted as not spam by 5 votes to 1 in no short order.
Before this, I had never proposed something as spam, and never voted on anything that wasn't obviously either spam or not spam, so I can't say I'm altogether sure how the system works, but I checked through the guidelines first and:
* The work does not exist
* The work is not combined with any real work
* The work is listed by a 'legitimate' user, but was probably added by them as a joke/troll attempt.
My questions:
1. Why is this not considered to be spam? Is it just because it is on the list of someone whose other entries are legitimate ones?
2. What should be done with the entry if anything? And if nothing, why? And what's to stop the site from being flooded with non-existant joke entries like this one?

>279 kuuderes_shadow: Where did you even *see* this work? Before I add other comments/questions, the work itself is not spam. There are tons of things that are not books, and are here on LT, and the people who are using LT to catalog them are very happy that it's possible to do so.
Did this work show up somewhere, being promoted by either the person who added it, or the author? The book was added to the library on May 12th, and it might just be that there's a typo, or other error.
You shouldn't *do* anything, far as I can tell. I suspect that there will be other people responding to this while I'm typing, but in case there aren't, I may come back and add even more.
(Edited)
Please note the work, and the add date:
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/wickedshizuku&collection=-1&deepsear...
Since it's a free account, all those books were added at once. The user may not have been back since adding them. Honestly, I don't believe that there was (or is) anything that needs doing. You could always try to guess what book it was that wickedshizuku was trying to add, and then combine this work in with it. You could also just ignore it.
Perhaps this is a question best left up to staff, but it's not spam. Really.

I would say that it was voted down because it is not spam. It isn't trying to sell anything. People are free to add nonexistant works if they want to. And non-books ...
Besides, it could be this : http://www.amazon.com/Piece-Film-Vol-1000-Limited-Comic/dp/B00B84P3XQ/ref=sr_1_2...
I have a few books in my catalogue that have never been available to the public. There is no way to be absolutely sure that a work 'doesn't exist'.

I'm guessing people aren't voting it as spam because there is nothing obvious to indicate that it is spam, and the general rule is to err on the side of assuming a work is not spam. You say "the work does not exist", but I don't know that to be true. Could you explain why you think that? Why do you think it's a joke?

I saw the work when on the author combine/separate page, going through and combining different versions of various volumes from the series to tidy it up.
As for why I think it's a joke, the series in question is at 75 volumes, with no end in sight, and with volumes still consistently selling millions of copies within a week of release, there's a fairly standard joke that the series will never end. Let's just say there are a lot of people out there who would create an entry like volume 1000 of the series for a joke.
The fact that it is assigned to a prolific and very well known mangaka means that there's little chance of it being some entry that noone has heard of, as it could have been if the author was relatively unknown, or even just someone who wasn't known to spend >7000 hours per year working on their main series.
Of course, yes, it could have been a strange typo or something like Martha listed. I repeat that I am not complaining that the entry was voted down - and I am perfectly willing to accept arguments for its validity. The more important of the two questions (by far) was the second one - as in, how an entry that is either known or believed to be added as a joke should be dealt with.

If it's merely believed to be a joke, leave it alone. Known to be a joke, probably also leave it alone. It's really commercial spam that we're concerned about.
Here's the definition of a spam work:
An illegitimate item added in order to direct someone to an external website or otherwise buy something.
A illegitimate item added in order to hang some other spam data, like a spam review.
Note that "joke", like "stuffed bobcat", is not included.

Exactly. But this wasn't a case of a spam post in an otherwise legitimate thread. The OP was spam, and responding to it means the thread continues to show up.
