A wonderful book and a wonderful edition thereof! Jean Charlot's work here is, along with his illustrations for Carmen, the finest illustration work he ever did, and Wilder's short novel ranks with the finest English fiction of the 20th century.

Django, you must mean American fiction!

Er, the book is written in English. Or are we calling it "American" now?

Yes, Don, I should have said "English language fiction."

You have to plug American fiction since the English were ahead of us by several centuries until we started to catch up with Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck etc.

What a lovely LEC - not one of the showy ones, but a nice size, gorgeous illustrations, pleasant print and a harmonious whole...

>8 GusLogan: I completely agree. It was my surprise LEC hit of 2020. I knew nothing of the book going in and came away impressed with every aspect, including the story itself. Given its low cost, I would consider it one of the best "gateway" LECs for any newbie interested in sampling what LEC was all about.

>7 leccol: Twain, London, Bierce, Poe, Hawthorne, Alcott and Melville did a pretty good job of the "catch-up" work versus our cousins across the pond. You're selling American fiction short.

>11 Sport1963: Unfortunately, Don (aka leccol) is no longer with us. He was opinionated but was a passionate collector and fan of the Limited Editions Club and had quite a wonderful collection, including many copies he had restored at great expense from a neglected original. We were at loggerheads often but his opinions were always based on a love for the marque, and I miss his knowledge and passion.

>12 Django6924: Thank you Django, I'm sorry that leccol has passed. On a sunnier and related note, the spirited and almost always good-natured, rational debate found on this forum is a refreshing pause from the rest of the day.
