I have some remarks apropos of your thread title.
I read books published as non-fiction, and ones published as fiction. But I use neither designation myself in either cataloging or physically organizing my library. I often find these categories deceptive and obstructive.
On the one hand, there are truths accessible through fiction -- in fact I would say there are some truths most accessible through fiction. Complementarily, there is storytelling in most non-fiction works, errors in nearly all, and deliberate falsehood in many.
Also, I am interested in factual accounts concerning authors and literature, as well as fictional accounts incorporating actual people and events. I use topical and biographical axes of organization to bring together books like an instructional book on occultism, a biography of a famous occultist, and a novel written by that occultist.

I made the mistake of starting to read Lisa Randall's Warped Passages yesterday at the same time I was in the middle of a George Eliot novel. Randall's silly pop-music epigraphs bear no comparison to Eliot's thoughtful ones, and (from what little headway I've made in Randall's book) I am not confident that Randall will give me a better picture of reality than Eliot does.
