My friend is a multi-genre reader but she doesn't venture into the horror genre at all for fear of being scared. She wants to try King but doesn't want the very scary ones. What do you suggest?

The Eyes of the Dragon comes to mind immediately -- kind of a quasi-fantasy setting, and not scary, but very suspenseful and well-written as always.

Some of King's novellas are non-horror. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption for example. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, about a little girl getting lost in the woods, is also a good story, but not really 'horror'. And his recent novel about the Kennedy assassination couldn't really be called horror, either, in my opinion.

Duma Key My favourite King book.

These are my favorite Stephen King books I did not tag as horror:
Dolores Claiborne (thriller - I listened to this one via a "book-on-tape," and its format was perfect for that media.)

The Green Mile (thriller)

"Low Men in Yellow Coats" (science fiction - a short novel in the Hearts In Atlantis collection)

I will second The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (story), The Eyes of the Dragon (fantasy), and 11/22/63 (science fiction.)

Those books have scary moments, but not monster/horror type stuff.

I thought Duma Key was quite scary in a supernatural kind of way, but it did have a great story, and great friendship.
Also, The Body is a novella that is not scary - it became the movie Stand By Me.

Yes to The Green Mile, The Eyes of the Dragon, and Shawshank Redemption.

Definitely stay away from It and Misery!

Great minds think alike! Those are many of the books I thought of.

I like all these suggestions and would add The Dead Zone, which to my mind is more a thriller with one supernatural element.

The Firestarter is one of my favorites. Thriller with supernatural elements but no real horror.

I would definitely agree with The Dead Zone and Fire Starter. Probably elements of sci-fi, but not horror. I would also say that the Dark Tower books are not strictly horror either. I would classify them as a cross between sci-fi and fantasy. And The Stand would probably be classified similarly as sci-fi and modern fantasy. It is really hard to put most of SK books into a specific genre. He has wandered all over the place genrewise.

I thought about mentioning The Stand. While not horror, it is horrific, so I didn't.

>12 Morphidae: The Stand contains one of the scariest scenes I have ever read.
