Schwob

Any thoughts on Marcel Schwob?

He seems to inhabit a grey area of time and space between the symbolists and the surrealists.

I've recently purchased Imaginary Lives and now considering Monelle.

I have loved everything I have read. The Book of Monelle is interesting - it reminded me of the Nag Hammadi treatise, "Thunder, Perfect Mind".

Sold.

And yet another reference used by David Tibet into the bargain.

The man is probably capable of reading the original. I haven't followed him much musically, but last I checked he was absorbed in Coptic studies.

Not to be confused with the financial services guy:

I can see a direct line between the two, Karl.

Both are obviously fantacists for a start.

Although I suspect the earlier Schwob had considerably more self awareness.

Speaking of Schwob, I can't believe I never posted this ("that's the trouble with insurance: destruction just isn't permanent anymore"):

Wakefield Press has an impressive catalogue. I am looking forward to their collection of Jean Ray coming up.

Interesting, I'll look into it.

In the new Colette movie starring Keira Knightley, we see Schwob as a secondary character. In this case, working away in Willy's "Factory" of ghostwriters churning out schlock for the masses.

I'm completely blown away by Marcel Schwob after reading Mimes, The Children's Crusade, and Imaginary Lives. I still have The King in the Golden Mask and The Book of Monelle in my pile. I've also discovered the ancient treasure that is the Mimes of Herondas(Herodas) thanks to Schwob.

I finally got round to reading Monelle, and I am blown away. I am usually not into mystical paradoxical musings, but this has a poetic quality all of its own. And the first part with the portraits of the children is amazing.

Finally bought The King in the Golden Mask ... along with Marthe and A vau-l'eau, both by Huysmans. Looking forward to reading all three.

I love everything I've read by Schwob. He reminds me of Yeats a little bit. So mystic and poetic. I read somewhere that he was a good friend to Oscar during his Parisian exile, which makes me like him even more.

@PhilOPosia I'm not really familiar with that. I'll tell you when I find it.

I finally read The Book of Monelle this week. Adored it. Posted a review.
