LT Members Giveaway

Has anyone ever given away a BookCrossing registered book via LTMG? I can't see anything in the rules to prevent it and it strikes me as an interesting way of promoting BC to the wider LT membership.

What do you all think?

I'm not a BookCrossers member, but have received several ER & MGs. I think your idea might violate the spirit of the programs. Here's a statement that I found that would cause concern:

All results are final and non-negotiable. The book is for the recipient's own personal use and may not be sold.

I've given away books (all BookCrossing-registered) via LTMG many times when the program first started. I ended up not liking it at all because I'd spend money for postage and would get neither a journal entry nor a thank you. It was not worth my money spent on postage. I find wild releasing much more satisfactory than giving away BC-registered books through LTMG.

One thing I do, though, is give away BC-registered books to other members here on LT if I see that a particular book that I have is on a fellow LTer's wishlist. Another thing I do is friend LT members and send them BC-registered books (with condition notes) via BookMooch for points to select my own free books later.

BC-registered books do not violate the spirit of the LTMG program because BC-registered books may definitely be kept for personal use. There is no requirement that a BC-registered book must be kept traveling.

BC-registered books should not be sold, but I've seen places of book sales (e-Bay, used book stores) that had books with BC labels for sale. Once a BC-registered book is released, control of the book lies in its karma, not with the Bookcrosser who released it in the first place.

Trevor, just for fun, I think you should try the LTMG program, at least for one or two books, and then see what kind of response you get. You will get takers. Maybe your responses will be better than mine.

Thank you for your responses. I think I might just wait for the 'right' book to try it with. In the meantime I might have a wander around some wish lists.

You can't! At least, not any more. That was a feature we once had here on LibraryThing, and then it was taken away. No matter how much I begged Tim to bring it back, he never did. Perhaps you can request it on the RSI (Recommend Site Improvement) Group?

The only way you can find wishlists at all on LT is to go to an individual member's profile and pull up that person's collection called "Wishlist". :(
