Word or phrase usage

Can someone advise if there is an index or count of words or phrases used over time in newspaper and magazine articles. For example, that would show the number of times the word "nicotine" was used per year in the period from 1980 to 2013, etc

It's something like the nGram viewer used by Google, but it preceeds that.

There are quite a few that linguists have built for different purposes: trying googling "English corpus" (or corpora).
