Former San Diego journalist Neil Morgan died February 1 at age 89. He wrote several books, including Above San Diego.

German conductor Gerd Albrecht died February 2 at age 78. He wrote Musikinstrumente, und wie man sie spielt among others.

Former vice president's wife Joan Mondale died February 3 at age 83. She wrote The Mondale Family Cookbook among others.

Poet and art critic Rene Ricard died February 1 at the age of 67. He was the author of God with Revolver.

Dr. Robert A. Dahl died February 5 at age 98. The former Yale professor wrote many books, including How Democratic is the American Constitution? and Democracy and Its Critics.

Hall of Fame ballplayer Ralph Kiner died February 6 at age 91. He wrote Kiner's Korner and contributed to several other books about baseball.

Prolific poet Maxine Kumin died February 6 at age 88. Among her many works are Our Ground Time Here Will Be Brief and Inside the Halo and Beyond.

Martin Plissner, longtime political director of CBS News, died February 6 at age 87. He wrote The Control Room: How Television Calls the Shots in Presidential Elections.

Actress and diplomat Shirley Temple Black died February 10 at the age of 85. She was the author of Child Star: An Autobiography.

Comedian Sid Caesar died February 12 at the age of 91. He was the author if Caesar's Hours.

Author Maggie Estep died February 12 at the age of 50. She wrote Diary of an Emotional Idiot.

Cultural theorist Stuart Hall died February 10 at the age of 81. He was the author of Cultural Representations.

Prolific short story writer Mavis Gallant died February 18 at age 91. In addition to numerous works of short fiction, she wrote the novels Green Water, Green Sky and A Fairly Good Time.

Scholar of Chinese art, James Cahill died February 14 at the age of 87. He wrote Chinese Painting and Hills Beyond a River.

An expert on lemurs, Alison Jolly died February 6 at the age of 76. She was the author of The Evolution of Primate Behavior.

Maria von Trapp, last surviving member of the Trapp Family Singers, died February 18 at age 99. She wrote Yesterday Today and Forever.

The new reports keep saying last surviving member. So all of the children are now dead too?

Confusion reigns, as always, whenever I post to this group.
First, an LT member kindly pointed out to me privately that the Maria von Trapp who just passed away is not the one who wrote the book I cited.
Second, some of the obituaries quoted a brother, so she cannot be the last surviving von Trapp child, but (as I read it) was the last of the siblings who sang professionally.
Varielle- should I just delete all of this later today (posts 11 and 13)?
Or shall I leave them in place as an example to others of how *not* to post?

Oh, leave it. We need some conversation here. From the news reports I thought this was the Maria of the movie. The news hasn't been very clear.

Aaron Dale Allston, Aaron Allston born 8, December 1960 in Corsicana TX collapsed at Springfield MO on 27, Feb 2014, while attending a convention. he died later that day.

British expert on fire control at sea, Frank Rushbrook died February 17 at the age of 99. He was the author of Fire Aboard and Ship Fires and the Law.

Compiler of books and letters, Bill Adler, Sr., died February 28 at the age of 84. A few of his books include Cat's Letters to Santa and The Kennedy Wit.

Federico Campbell died February 15, 2014 at the age of 72. He was best known for his stories about Tijuana translated as Tijuana: Stories on the Border.

British psychiatrist and mental health care reformer, Henry R. Rollin died February 6 at the age of 102. He was the author of Festina Lente A Psychiatric Odyssey.

Richard D. Daugherty died on February 22, 2014 at the age of 91. He was an archaeologist who excavated many famous Native American sites and set the standard for cooperation between archaeologists and Native Americans. He wrote The Yakima People.

Chokwe Lumumba died February 25, 2014 at the age of 66. He was an attorney and mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. He wrote Reparations, Yes.

Master bookbinder Ivor Robinson died February 19 at the age of 89. He was the author of Introducing Bookbinding.

Historian Nicholas Brooks died February 2 at the age of 73. He was the author of Anglo-Saxon Myths, The Early History of the Church of Canterbury and Communities and Warfare.

Journalist Tom Margerison died February 25 at the age of 90. He was author of The Superpoison.

James T. Tague was on his way to lunch when he was struck by a ricocheting bullet and became the third man hit during the Kennedy assasination. Mr. Tague died February 28 at the age of 77. He wrote LBJ and the Kennedy Killing and Truth Withheld.

Historian Margaret Pawley died February 28 at the age of 91. She started her career with the SOE in Egypt and Italy before becoming a historian. Her books include Prayers for Pilgrims, Praying with the English Tradition and Watch on the Rhine: The Military Occupation of the Rhineland.
