Yes, I've found the list of characters to be useful in the past.
I've been reading Proust for about two years - one book every 6 months or so (I'm trying to space it out), and having the reference has been very helpful.

About 2/3 of the way down this page is Benjamin Taylor's excellent seminar on the entire text of In Search of Lost Time. Each lecture covers about half of each volume. I really enjoyed listening to these talks after reading the relevant part of each volume.
