I've recently started chanting with a small group. It's a great experience, but I'm bothered by the fact that everything is in Japanese, a language I don't understand. I did find a useful translation, with commentary, of the Lotus Sutra -- Nikkyo Niwano's Buddhism for Today. But does anyone know of a website or book that explains what the characters mean on the scroll? I know it's part of the Lotus Sutra. What I'm looking for is something that can tell me what each of the characters I'm looking at means, so I'm not just gazing at a jumble of pretty but, to me, meaningless characters.

The Gohonzon (scroll) has nam myoho renge kyo down the center, along with nichiren daishonin's signature. There are some of the names of the buddha, as well as some important thoughts about practice, names of bodhisattvas, and others.

Here is an explanation of each set of glyphs on the gohonzon: Gohonzon

There are a number of good introductory texts for this practice, including The Buddha in Your Mirror, The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, The essential Lotus : selections from the Lotus Sutra, and The Buddha in Daily LIfe

Thanks, kassetra! I thought I had found the SGI website, but it must have been something different. The link you provided has a lot more information on it!

Thanks, also, for the reading recommendations. I will try some of these.

Anything to help! :)

I have a nice-sized library of buddhism books and stuff, so if you have any more questions about nichiren buddhism, I'm happy to help. :)
