Not sure if there are many active members left in this group but here goes with a new thread for next month.

I'm planning to read The mistress of the Spices in the New Year.

I'll be reading Lives of the Monster Dogs.

I haven't heard of that one before, it sounds interesting.

I've got The Song of Achilles on order from the library. I've got a category in the 2014 category challenge to read more Orange nominated books.

I've got a few I'd like to read:

Love Marriage by VV Ganeshananthen (2009 longlist)
The Long Song by Andrea Levy (2010 longlist)
The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff

But if I get one done, excellent! Last year I read quite a few each month, but ran out of steam by July. Maybe the first half of the year will be successful again.

Thanks for reviving the group. I imagine a few more people will show up as January gets going.

I'll be finishing the Light Between Oceans around Jan 1st--will that count? And then I have the rest of the month to read one or two of the 22 Orange books in my TBR pile. I'm leaning toward N-W, but I'm not committing at this point. ;-)

I'll read The Rehearsal by Eleanor Catton.

Because I have Christmas money to spend, I'll probably start with May We Be Forgiven, which I'm putting on my Kindle right now. It didn't appeal to me as I read about it before it won, but I am trying to read the new winners - I have a few old ones yet to read. From there, I don't know. I may go ahead with The Goldfinch because I'm pretty sure that it will make the 2014 long list.
(And thank you for getting us going again, Kerry. I certainly have no intention of deserting the group in January and July!)

I am moving mid-January so I am not sure how much reading I will get done but will try to read one or two (whatever book gets unpacked first is pretty much my oh-so-scientific method of choosing one).

OK, lots of interest still in the group. I really enjoy reading at least two of these books each year.

After spending way too much time the last few days trying to get audio books on to my new iPhone, magically it worked and I'm listening to The Forgotten Waltz, by Anne Enright, which happens to be an Orange book.

I read at least one Orange book per month. A few years ago kidzdoc threw that challenge out there and I have met it every year. I've not yet chosen my January Orange read.

Vitamin C.............it is so good for you!

I'm still aiming to read one a month, as well (at least on average). In January I'll be reading We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Ene 7, 2014, 12:52 am

Ohhhhhh Anne, that was a five star read for me. It is very, very good. I don't know that it a book one enjoys so much as vastly appreciates. And I hop you do. I envy you reading for the first time.

I am just settling in to begin my first Orange for ORANGE JANUARY: The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. This one is a reread for me but it has been quite a few years since I read it so I am looking forward to this read very much.

16rainpebble
Ene 13, 2014, 10:44 pm

So far in ORANGE JANUARY I have read:
1. The Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler; (3*)
2. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd; (5*)
3. The Seas by Samantha Hunt; (4 1/2*)
4. Gilead by Marilynne Robinson; (5*)
5. Home by Marilynne Robinson; (4*)
6. Annabel by Kathleen Winter; (4*)
7. The Little Stranger by Sarah Water; (4 1/2*)
8. The White Woman on the Green Bicycle by Monique Roffey; (4*)

I've not been getting a lot of sleep this month.

Where is everyone? I am missing you all. Usually Orange January & July are some of the more heavily trodden threads of the year but there doesn't seem to be the interest any longer. Oh well, it's all still Orange to me but perhaps if we changed the theme name to "The Women's Prize in Fiction" or whatever it is now called more would come.

If we build it they will come...................

Ene 13, 2014, 10:57 pm

Well, maybe and maybe not..... You're here; I'm here; raidergirl is here. Let's face it: we miss Jill and her enthusiasm and give-aways. I don't think that changing the name would help any. We didn't publicize and people are trying to keep up with threads among the 75ers.
Meanwhile, I am about to get to Ursula Under, which will be my second (and probably last) Orange for January. I'm looking forward to it!
And I'm awed by how fast you read, Belva, as usual.

Hi Peggy.
And it's all still ORANGE to me anyway. I can't even find myself on the 75 book gig so gave that up but am very happy on the 100 book challenge threads. Just miss so many of you, ya know.
Ursula Under sounds weird but good. I will have to get that one from the library so we can compare notes.
It's so good to see you here my dear. And as far as how fast I read....I just happen to be a total insomniac, diagnosed & everything....so what does one do? This one reads!

I am here but merely observing for now. We move tomorrow so January has been crazy busy. Next week things should settle down a bit and I will finally have access to my packed books again!

I still plan to read The Rehearsal by Eleanor Catton this month, probably the weekend after next. Kudos for keeping this group active and for reading eight Orange books in two weeks, Belva!

22raidergirl3
Ene 14, 2014, 2:18 pm

I just started The Long Song by Andrea Levy. Will probably be my only Orange this month.

Danielle, we are in the middle of moving as well, kind of. We haven't sold our place yet, but have moved a bunch of stuff to our new house (my parent's old house) Books are everywhere, but I made sure to keep a few I thought I might read at home.

>22 raidergirl3:;
raider; I like The Long Song. I don't recall raving about it but it was a solid 3 star read for me. I hope you enjoy it. And if you are in the process of moving or any life altering change, one Orange is doing great I think!

>21 kidzdoc::
Hi Darryl. I have been hearing chatter about The Rehearsal round & about on L.T. & it sounds good. I still keep to your challenge of a few years ago to read one Orange a month through the year. It's a great challenge. I have read so very few Orange listed books that I was disappointed in. So eight good ones in a month..........piece of cake for this old retired one. ;-)
Thanks for the kind words and I wish I could take credit but avatiakh is actually the one who got the group going this year. So yea! Kudos to her.

>20 Yells::
bucket; you just do what you need to do and we will be here when you are ready, willing & able. Moving is such a difficult job both physically & emotionally.

Good to see you two here.

Hi everyone!

After trying over and over to follow multiple groups and discussions, I have to admit I just can't. I've narrowed my LT social interaction to just the 2014 challenge group.

I do have a pile of Oranges on the To Read pile this year though. I'm planning to read 20, one for each letter of the alphabet minus a few letters. So I might pop in here occasionally to chat. (The Oranges I read this month were underwhelming so I won't mention them.)

Have a Orangey January! *hugs*

Hi Belva - looks like you've read enough Orange books this month to make up for any group shortcomings. I think this group will putter along in a low key manner, maybe when the nominations are announced we'll get a bit of traffic.
I finished The mistress of Spices a couple of weeks ago and found it fairly mediocre. As I'm away from home and don't have anymore Orange books with me, I'm now reading Helen Dunmore's The Betrayal which is the followup to her Orange shortlisted The Siege.

I am here, too, although I must confess to being an Orange slacker. I plan to update my orange thread as I haven't posted anything there since July of 2012! I also checked through the complete list on the wiki to see which Orange books I've purchased in the past year are so.

I pulled these from my general TBR stack and added them to the short stack of Orange books I already had:

Burnt Shadows - 2009 SL

The Outcast
Lullabies for Little Criminals - both from 2008 SL

The Colour - 2004 SL

Homestead - 2001 SL; I may have read this one but have no memory of it so on the stack it goes.

The book I truly want to read this year is The Ghost Road by Pat Barker. I've owned it for awhile and have recently purchased the first two in the trilogy which I must read first. I will try and save this one to read in Orange July.

It is fairly late in the month and I've committed to many books. I noticed I have a short Orange book to read which I will try and fit in during to show my solidarity for this group. Hotel du Lac is one I should be able to fit between my other planned reading.

ETA: Oops, Hotel du Lac was on my Booker stack! I guess I can't count it for this group. :-(

Just chiming in to say that I agree with Peggy in post #18 that it's hard to sustain the enthusiasm of Orange January and Orange July without Jill and her fabulous giveaways. But I'm still here, and when things slow down a little I will create a new thread for 2014.

I still love this group though and am still committed to reading one Orange a month--whatever it's called. (Or more realistically, 12 a year.)

I also always try to read the whole shortlist before the winner is picked and I hope we do the shadow jury again this year.

I read and loved one Orange book for Orange January--We Need to Talk About Kevin--and will try to read one in February though I'm not yet sure what. I have several possibilities in mind.

>28 AnneDC::
Anne, We Need to Talk About Kevin was a real page turner and a 5* read for me. I found it quite hypnotic and though I had guessed what was going to happen, even that didn't spoil the read for me. It was so very good. I'm so glad you loved it too.
And I do agree very much with you that without Jill to lead us and spur us on it is not nearly as much fun. But one can only give so much and must needs at times choose where to give so it is what it is and we can still read & enjoy our Oranges even if it isn't as special as it was. Jill has her own business up & running now and needs to put her time and energy in growing it and I wish her the very best. I am sure that in her heart she misses us too.

>27 Donna828::
Donna! Hi and sorry, we have NO slackers here! And of the 5 Oranges you listed I only have The Colour and have started it a couple of times but have found myself setting it aside each time. IDK......... The other 4 are going on my 'want to read' list for the library. They all look interesting especially Burnt Shadows. I will be reading Ghost Road this year too as I am reading the series for the Great War Theme Read on the Virago group & for Club Read 2014. We shall have to compare notes when we have read it.

>26 avatiakh::
Hello Ava. I loved Helen Dunmore's The Seige, (4 1/2*) & The Betrayal, (5*) both. I love her writing and will be reading The Lie as part of my Great War reading over on the Virago group. I am really looking forward to it and hope you are appreciating her books that you have & are reading.
And yes, I am sure we will pick up a few more readers when the long list is announced and then even more when the short list is announced. It will be good. :-)

>25 Her_Royal_Orangeness::
Hello HRO. I (& I'm sure the rest of us too) can totally understand that feeling one gets when one overextends oneself. I have hung myself up a few years with too many challenges and not been able to do any of them, nor myself, any justice.
I enjoyed a very Orange January & hope to do the same in July though we will be on holiday. But we'll see. At any rate you enjoy your reading that you have set out for yourself this year and perhaps I will pop over & check your reading out.
hugs right back atcha,
belva

Does anyone know offhand of an Orange book that falls with the WW I scope?

Gaglow, In the Dark, A Spell of Winter, The Ghost Road...I'm sure there are others.

Thank you Becca. I have done A Spell of Winter and have The Ghost Road coming up. I will add the other two to my list.
I appreciate it. :-)
