Taking the liberty of starting a December thread . . .

I have just started The Tenor Saxophonist's Story, a collection of connected stories by Czech writer Joseph Škvorecký. The book was a Hanukkah present from my lovely wife, who didn't even know that I've been a Škvorecký fan since I read his wonderful novella, The Bass Saxophone, in grad school. She just knew she wanted to remind me of our great vacation in the Czech Republic a few years back. Anyway, the first two stories are very good.

Thank you for the kick-off rocketjk! How cool your wife found that for you! Beautiful little story :)

I am enjoying greatly Granta's Best of Young Spanish Novelists for my December short story read.

Like the sound of Joseph Škvorecký - I'll be checking him out.

I just finished Dylan Thomas' Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog.

An enjoyable collection (his first) of the Welshman's 1920s/30s youth and coming of age. My review of it is here.

I finished and reviewed the wonderful Granta Best of Young Spanish Language Novelists. I always am happy to stumble on to a find like this, for $1.00 no less, at my local library charity book sale! Worth ferreting out, if anyone has an interest in new and different South American/Spanish (and one from Mexico) writers. Little bummed no one from Central America, but hey, cannot have it all. It has made me want to seek out some of these writers and check out their other works that may have been translated into English.

Love it when you find one like that at a library sale!

Just finished reading a marvelous collection of short story/essays by Franklin Burroughs, entitled Billy Watson's Croker Sack.

I finished the very enjoyable collection of inter-connected short stories, The Tenor Saxophonist's Story by Josef Škvorecký. You can find my review on the book's work page or on my own 50-Book Challenge thread.

Just collected Tenth of December: Stories by George Saunders from the library on audiobook. It's read by the author. Looking forward to listening to these tales while others rush around in the run-up to Christmas.

I just finished Tenth of December. I gave it 3.5 stars as I thought a lot of the writing was good, but the collection of short stories was a mixed bag - some of them were very strong, while others left me cold and unaffected.

My review of it is here.
