how do we include magazines in the collection?

I have Friends Journal and Quaker life in my meeting - Do we catalog or tag them?

I am just starting to catalog our library, however I am fairly familiar with LibraryThing. You can add anything you'd like from the "Add books" tab up top. Scroll down and select "Add manually" under "Other options." You can make up or use any tags that are meaningful for you: subjects, location, etc.

I have not done this periodicals yet myself, but am planning to.

I have not been cataloging periodicals since I'm doing all the books and pamphlets first. If and when I do I will categorize them in Collections as Periodicals to keep them separate a bit from the books. Other of my collections are Pendle Hill Pamphlets, Misc Pamphlets, Quaker History Bulletins, etc. You could also just tag them as such or both.

There are three main ways people catalog periodical on LT

- Catalog just the title of the magazine and then put your holdings in the Comments field. You can use the Add Books feature to do that, since that's the way libraries catalog their magazines.
- Catalog each year's worth (or volume or any other grouping that makes sense to you.
- Catalog each issue

The last two require manual entry.

Usually the magazine editor goes in the main author. I suspect in your case that you will often want the institution that put out the magazine as the author.

Many of us add a series to the magazine issue if we catalog each issue. See here for example. This would be particularly interesting for you folks as a group as you could see if one of your group had a particular issue you were missing. It does, however, add a lot of work to the process.
