Off the top of my head I'd guess The Fifth Elephant
4Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect.
5joannasephine
From memory, it's Vimes referring to the events of ... is it Thud? (If it is, Helenliz can have my go. I'm going to be up to my elbows in grout for the next few days.)
6Beorn_se_Bacaire
That would be the right answer... Go for it Helenliz.
7Helenliz
OK - here goes:
Because the universe was full of ignorance all around and the scientist panned through it like a prospector crouched over a mountain stream, looking for the gold of knowledge among the gravel of unreason, the sand of uncertainty and the little whiskery eight-legged swimming things of superstition

8Helenliz
I'm hoping that hasn't broken the rules - it's a descriptive passage, not from a character's speech. But I did use it as a chapter quote for Chapter 1 of my thesis, seemed entirely relevant for a literature review chapter.
9pinkozcat
No rules broken; anything goes. But I have no idea where it is from so I'll use my default answer: Unseen Academicals :)
11pinkozcat
Just testing to see if Internet Explorer will let me post so I will try my default #2.
The Last Continent.
The Last Continent.
14guido47
Ah yes, though is it I to IV? #XIII?
I really have no idea and I can't remember anything like that at all.
Sorry, I won't even guess at all.
OK. The discworld Companion The first one :-)

OK. The discworld Companion The first one :-)
15Beorn_se_Bacaire
I figure I'll start with the first one...
16Helenliz
sorry, that's two incorrect guesses. And it would make no difference which volume you chose, it would still wrong. Just thought I'd save you trying each one in turn >;-)
17pinkozcat
I'll go way out on a limb and guess Equal Rites
21joannasephine
Nicely puzzling! I think it’s the reference to a scientist that’s stumping us. Ok, I’ll try Small Gods?
22Helenliz
No again.
Of course, if you'd care to look up my thesis it'd be easy, it's properly referenced & everything. I've got one sitting on my bookshelf, there are 4 others (that I know of).

And I could have sworn that it was a wizard book.
It is Witches Abroad and if it is correct then justjim can have my turn because he obviously knew the answer before i did.

35pinkozcat
Helenliz, is it Witches Abroad?
37pinkozcat
Here is a nice easy one to try to drag some more participants into this thread.
The disappearing-backwards sheep could wait.
The disappearing-backwards sheep could wait.
38edrandrew
We must be talking Feegles here. I'll try Wee Free Men.
43Beorn_se_Bacaire
Small Gods?
48pinkozcat
Hmmmm - Interesting Times?
50joannasephine
Granny, talking to Mightily Oats in Carpe Jugulum?
52joannasephine
Beorn, do you want to take this one?
53Beorn_se_Bacaire
No thanks--you go for it :D
54joannasephine
Ok then:
He wound up his arm with the rock in it and hit her squarely between the eyes.
He wound up his arm with the rock in it and hit her squarely between the eyes.
55Beorn_se_Bacaire
Ah--ok. No points for guessing the speaker.
"Don't know what you mean, sir,"
"Don't know what you mean, sir,"
56joannasephine
? Is that an answer, or another question, Beorn?
57pinkozcat
Hmmm - feast or famine here today. Blame the new format - I lost every post from every group I belong to and had a bit of trouble finding them again.
58justjim
Is that the start of one of the great romances of Holy Wood? Moving Pictures?
59joannasephine
Yes indeedy – Detritus and Ruby. Take it away Jim!
60justjim
Ok then. Here we go.
Automatically, his wife said, 'No, dear, you know drink doesn't agree with you.'
Replies may or may not be delayed as I may or may not be having some drinks of my own. It may or may not be my birthday.
ps They will. I shall. It is!

61pinkozcat
I had my birthday on Thursday. I hope that you have/had a great day.
I'll have a guess at The Fifth Elephant as, except that it is Lady Sibyl speaking, I haven't a clue.

62justjim
Belated best wishes, Minnie! It isn't The Fifth Elephant though.
And now I really must be off, I can hear a pint of Guinness calling my name! Keep them coming.

64guido47
Happy birthday Jim.
Because I/we are Aussies, the last continent
Because I/we are Aussies, the last continent
67justjim
I think War was a little "hen-pecked" in The Thief of Time, but that's not the right book.
68joannasephine
Happy birthday Jim, and belated happy birthday Minnie!
Just how many of us Aussies are there in this group?!
Just how many of us Aussies are there in this group?!
70Beorn_se_Bacaire
It was a question--since I was looking for a quote as Joanna posted.
Happy Birthday, and Slainte, Jim.
Everybody is an Aussie? Except for the Alaskan...
Snuff--some retired general's wife, I believe.

72guido47
For those of you unfamiliar with The Python Bruce Sketch . Guess I can't just post and run, so snuff
73justjim
Not Jingo, but it is Snuff. Well done Beorn_se_Bacaire. Half a mark off because she is actually some retired colonel's wife!
74Beorn_se_Bacaire
Ah--close. He was a relatively minor character (or at least didn't show up too much). I'll repost my mistimed prior one...
"Don't know what you mean, sir,"
"Don't know what you mean, sir,"
75guido47
less than sign I greater than sign TEXT Less, slash, I, greater.

Yay--a guess :P
But no...
But no...
85pinkozcat
Feet of Clay?
Yes - a guess but no-one else seems to be having a go so I only have another thirty something books to go through. :)

87Helenliz
I'm put in mind of a Monty Python sketch, rather than a Pratchett character, but I'll go with Going postal
88joannasephine
Or Thud?
89Beorn_se_Bacaire
Thud it is--Vimes being queried on how the two sides got drunk so suddenly...
Over to you Joanna
Over to you Joanna
90joannasephine
Yay!

Guessing ...Witches Abroad
92eclecticdodo
last continent?
don't ask me why, but it's the first that came into my head.
don't ask me why, but it's the first that came into my head.
93Helenliz
Monstrous regiment ? Another guess out of left field.
94joannasephine
No, nup and still no.
96joannasephine
Roni has it! (I just finished rereading Snuff, and that particular snippet still has me in giggles.)
97ronincats
Oops, sorry. Thanks for the reminder nudge, Joanna.
"The street was, if not a dead end, then seriously wounded by the area's change in fortunes."
"The street was, if not a dead end, then seriously wounded by the area's change in fortunes."
101ronincats
Now see, I thought it would be harder than that, seeing as there are descriptions of Ankh-Morpork in almost every book. :-(
pinkozcat has it.
pinkozcat has it.
102pinkozcat
*grin* sorry, ronincats, I just happen to be doing a re-read of The Truth at the moment.
Try this one ...
Oh, deary me! My poor old feet! Things today aren't what they used to be! Lawks!
Try this one ...
Oh, deary me! My poor old feet! Things today aren't what they used to be! Lawks!
103Helenliz
That's a witch but which witch?
I'm going with Witches abroad.
I'm going with Witches abroad.
104pinkozcat
No - not Witches Abroad
107justjim
Witches saying "Lawks!"? That has to be the Scottish Play, er, I mean, Wyrd Sisters?
108edrandrew
Nah! Equal Rites surely.
109Helenliz
*vainly grabs at a witch containing book* Lords and ladies?
112pinkozcat
No - not Carpe Jugulum
113Beorn_se_Bacaire
A-hah! It is Nobby Nobbs, pretending to be an old lady--I'm going to start with guessing Men at Arms.
114pinkozcat
No - not Men at Arms
116pinkozcat
Not Feet of Clay.
117justjim
Like many a military man*, Nobby first got in touch with his feminine side while serving overseas. Perhaps Jingo?
*Not an autobiographical comment.
*Not an autobiographical comment.
119Helenliz
Night Watch? Although I doubt it, TBH.
126Helenliz
Guards, Guards perchance?
127pinkozcat
No - not Guards! Guards!
128Beorn_se_Bacaire
Thief of Time, perchance?
It might be time for that hint...
It might be time for that hint...
129pinkozcat
Not Thief of Time
HINT:
It is a stand-alone Discworld book, so no Nobby and no witches but women's clothing has a strong association with the story, particularly the person who speaks the quote.

130Beorn_se_Bacaire
There we go. I knew it was in one I read recently.
Monstrous Regiment. Blouse speaking.
Monstrous Regiment. Blouse speaking.
132Beorn_se_Bacaire
It should have been enough for any normal soldier, but this guard was officer material.
134Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect.
137Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither.
139Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither is it that one.
141Beorn_se_Bacaire
Nope.
143Beorn_se_Bacaire
No. Let me know when it's time for a hint.
145Beorn_se_Bacaire
Not night watch. Rethink the guesses--nobody has come close yet.
148Helenliz
The Colour of Magic? (yes, I'm quite prepared to guess my way through the series >;-)
149Beorn_se_Bacaire
Three more down. Still not close... The following is from a couple lines above on the same page.
______caught the spear gently and lifted it out of the way of the door. As he did so the torchlight illuminated his face.
______caught the spear gently and lifted it out of the way of the door. As he did so the torchlight illuminated his face.
150guido47
Well, has to be 'carrot' whatever rank. He does though also appear in some Non Guards books.
So no guess!
So no guess!
151Beorn_se_Bacaire
It does not have to be Carrot...
153Beorn_se_Bacaire
Getting somewhat warmer, but Equal Rites is still incorrect.
156guido47
Well Dear Helenliz, other than the 39 novels in the canon, you do realize that there are many, many other books we use in this thread :-)
eg. The Discworld Companion say. It just happened to be close at hand :-)
eg. The Discworld Companion say. It just happened to be close at hand :-)
157Helenliz
Guido - I've not read any of the spinoff publications - consider me a purist. So I can only work my way along my shelf.
158guido47
Not all are 'spinoffs' Some are collections of short stories by Sir T himself :-) and some are collaborations. eg. What is your opinion of say The long Earth or even Dodger a novel I find difficult to classify in Sir T's pantheon?
159Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither Weird Sisters nor Sourcery. I have not ready any spinoff publications either (other than the Aching novels), and therefor the quote is from Canon.
162Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect. It is a canon book, and in a series that hasn't been guessed yet.
165Beorn_se_Bacaire
Ahah--yes it is Mort, Ozcat. Over to you.
166pinkozcat
A wild guess. It had to be from the DEATH series and I started at the beginning.
Try this one:
No one bothered with a formal battlecry, relying instead on the well-tried 'There 'e goes! Get 'im! Got 'im? Now kick 'im inna fork!'

167guido47
What's your default pinko, ah yes unseen academicals?
168pinkozcat
Unseen Academicals is my default No.1 and The Last Continent is No.2 but it is neither of those.
169Nahkis
A fine quote, indeed! Gives a wide range to choose from, but since Rincewind came to mind, I gotta try something.
Interesting Times?
Interesting Times?
170Helenliz
mm, sounds like someone not fighting fair, who might that be.
Light Fantastic ?
Light Fantastic ?
171pinkozcat
Nahkis - you tried successfully. It is from interesting Times but barbarians, I think, not Rincewind. I opened the book at random.
Go for it ... :)
Go for it ... :)
173pinkozcat
ronincats - it was from Interesting Times and Nahkis guessed it correctly.
175joannasephine
Maybe Roni was channelling Mrs Cake, and was prematurely precogniting ...
176Nahkis
Ok, sorry for the delay. Let's go with a quote that's easy for some, and trickier for others (I hope):
In this he was echoing the Patrician´s view of crime and punishment. If there was crime, there should be punishment.
In this he was echoing the Patrician´s view of crime and punishment. If there was crime, there should be punishment.
185Nahkis
Not Making Money. So, no hint just yet? All right.
186Beorn_se_Bacaire
Fifth Elephant?
188Nahkis
No to both. Here's a bit of dialogue from before the first quote:
"... There's plenty of evidence against him."
"Like what?" said ____.
"He's a troll."
"... There's plenty of evidence against him."
"Like what?" said ____.
"He's a troll."
191Beorn_se_Bacaire
Not Thud--I already tried that one...
192Nahkis
Men at Arms it is. Nobby and Angua discussing, first quote was all Nobby. Over to you, Beorn!
193Beorn_se_Bacaire
"How many dishonorable discharges have you had?"
"Lots." Said ______
"Lots." Said ______
196Beorn_se_Bacaire
No to both Soul Music and Guards! Guards!
198Beorn_se_Bacaire
Nope, not Monstrous Regiment
199joannasephine
Jingo? Nobby and Fred discussing the finer points of a military life?
200Beorn_se_Bacaire
Jingo is also incorrect...
201Helenliz
Men at Arms ? Working on the Fred/Nobby idea...
203Beorn_se_Bacaire
Men at Arms is correct--over to you Helenliz
204Helenliz
try this one:
'Actually, maybe zer cocoa is not too bad and zer young lady who plays zer harmonium, sometimes she vinks at me'
'Actually, maybe zer cocoa is not too bad and zer young lady who plays zer harmonium, sometimes she vinks at me'
205Beorn_se_Bacaire
The Truth? I want to say that it's Otto.
207Beorn_se_Bacaire
Whoot! Joannasephine can have my turn. I think it's time for a new topic, as well...
