An accurate portrayal of Eris right now.

So... oh my gosh, what do I say?

I dissapeared. It got tough keeping up with my thread, especially since the internet kept luring me away from books. I also started taking up too many haunts on the internet, and it gets exhausting responding to everyone. I eventually dropped all my haunts, keeping up with some, but mostly just feeling very disillusioned with the internet.

But I feel extremely ashamed about abandoning you guys. For some reason I am somewhat liked here, and I feel awful for departing my dear friends here without even a word of explanation. You were with me through all of last year, and for a lonely teenaged girl with few friends it meant so much to me, and still does.

I don't know how well I'll be able to keep up this thread now, but I think I should really start visiting all of your threads again. I probably won't be able to go back and real the miles of posts that I've missed, but I'm going to keep up with what you've all been up to now.

if anyone's interested, I'll be writing a "what I did with my life whilst on hiatus" post, and I'll also go swoop in on your threads.

Love you guys.

Forget about shame and embarrassment! We are just delighted to hear that you are okay! No demands from this end--if you want to just post what you've read fairly regularly, we'll keep your thread warm for you. I have to confess, we were a bit worried at your complete disappearance! It's good to know you are well.

My first question of course is, what do you think about the new Who rumors? My second (multi-part) question is, how is school going, are you taking time off over the summer, and are you still making art?

Kathy - The new Who rumors? After suffering a serious emotional breakdown over Matt's departure, I've kinda been able to function properly. I really have no idea who Twelve is going to be! I'm with Neil Gaiman when it comes to who Twelve will be - he should be an unknown actor. I want someone who doesn't have previous acting baggage, and can come on without being typecast. I want someone who can surprise me at the start of Series 8. :)

So, what are all of your thoughts on a new Doctor, that BLOODY CLIFFHANGER FINALE, and John Hurt's possibilities? Oh, and I was extremely happy with who Clara was revealed to be! She really was an ordinary girl, but one who made an extraordinary sacrifice for the Doctor. *sniff* I really adore Clara.

School is going fantastically, because it is all done. :D I am a free woman now! No more high-school and no more ridiculous California standards! I should probably be working on going to a community college, but mostly I've just been so happy to be free of all that pressure. I've mostly been writing and keeping up with art. It is glorious! I have been doing a lot of watercolors and oil pastels, and have also taken up art journaling. So much fun.

Writing has been my biggest pleasure, though. Out of the creation of my NaNoWriMo novel, Abigail Smith and the Seven Sisters hath sprung an entirely different novel but somewhat related novel, Ad Astra. I have plans for it, and have been working on this beloved baby of mine for the past few months. I'm really excited about it, and I hope I'll be able to write it the way that it should be.

Thank you so much Roni, Leah, Nora, and Foggi! I am so happy to be back, I truly am. *hugs to everyone*

SONG OF THE DAY

Space & Time, by VNV Nation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLiNr57387k

"Lost in thoughts,
On open seas,
Let the currents carry me,
If I could, would I remain,
Another life for another dream?
No turning back, face the fact,
I am lost in space and time,
Standing here, looking back in time."

A really good friend got me into this song and Irish and English electronic band, and for both of us it represents Doctor Who so well. It also reminds me of the state of life for me and many other young adults who have no idea what we're going to do with our lives - we're all lost, sometimes.

Editado: Jun 7, 2013, 7:02 pm

I agree with you (and Neil) that it should be someone unknown. I would love a fresh face! Some of the rumored candidates are just silly, like Richard Ayoade, Paris Jackson, Russell Brand, and... David Tennant. Haha!

As for John Hurt, I'm not real sure if I'm interested in a large story arc with him in it. (I know I know!) I just don't like the idea of a "fallen" or "bad" or "damaged" Doctor fragment. Yes, he's been all of those things at some point, but the whole point of the Doctor is that he recovers and adjusts and gets on with it. IDK, I think some resolution would be nice, not to just leave him floating out there in space and time, but I'm not sure how much after that we need to see.

I liked Clara's explanation a lot, mostly because it surprised us!

That's very exciting to hear you've been working on your writing. Good luck with it Eris!

This thread is already dangerous! I've been in Seattle for a month now and therefore missed ALL the Who action of the last few weeks. There are so many places on the internet that I can't even go near for fear of ruining it all for myself. Unfortunately, Pinterest managed to spoil one or two things for me before I even realized what was happening. Damn it! I look forward to getting home next week, getting caught up, and being able to chat with you guys about everything Who again.

I have spoiler-free lenses in my glasses. ;) No, I'm very adept at lightly scanning and avoiding when need be. The one thing I did read here just happened to be the thing Pinterest ruined for me, so no worries. And then, even if Pinterest hadn't ruined it for me, Wes did. He and Lisa haven't been inDOCTORinated yet but Wes read something somewhere online and was being a good friend by trying to strike up a conversation about something he knows I'm interested in. Unfortunately, he led with the spoiler. ;)

Jun 9, 2013, 7:04 pm

I completely agree about the new Doctor needing to be played by someone mostly unknown. A role as iconic as that just doesn't work if you bring in someone who is already cemented in the public mind due to previous roles.

Going to respond to all comments later. I've been cleaning a lot this week (LOTS of cleaning) and had an exciting adventure of rescuing a dog, so I'm a bit tired.

I did want to say that I went to Barnes & Noble a couple of days ago, and bought three books. I am so excited so about them!

Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman - I checked this book out from the library and am about eighty pages into it. I'm enjoying it so much so far that I had to buy it. I've listened to the BBC adaptation and absolutely adored it, so I am really savoring this novel.

The Once and Future King, by T. H. White - I've tried to read this book in the past, but I couldn't connect with it. Somehow I just started getting into it while standing in the bookstore reading it, and had to buy it!

And lastly, Selected Poems, by Robert Frost - the man is amazing, and since I didn't previously have any of his poems in my library that had to be changed.

Love you all so much, and thank you for coming to my thread! I'll get caught up tomorrow when I'm less tired. ^_^ *hugs to all*

SPOILERS

Caught up on Who tonight and I have to say I am totally confused. What is the connection between River and Clara? There has to be something there. I mean, they certainly didn't bring River back just so she could open a door. And the her parting words about still being linked to Clara and the parrallel of her telling Clara she'd just be a copy and Doctor telling River she was just a copy.... ARGGGG, so confused.

But that kiss between River and the Doctor. Man. I love them. I want all River, all the time!

I'm sad that Matt is leaving. I really did like him a lot.

23bluesalamanders
Editado: Jun 14, 2013, 7:14 am

Matt was pretty good as the Doctor. He did a great job of capturing the old-man-in-a-young-man's-body aspect of the character.

I really wish the announcement had been that Stephen Moffat was no longer going to be a writer/producer/whatever on the show. Most of the weirdest, most nonsensical and most irritating stuff is because of his influence.

24PaulCranswick

Good buys Eris. Robert Frost remains my favourite American poet and sadly and unfairly overlooked for the Nobel prize IMO. Have a lovely weekend.

BTW there are 11 books re-released by the BBC to celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who; 1 per Doc. Highly recommended. I have bought five of the new editions thus far.

22, 23 - Can't believe we're talking about Matt in the past tense! I'll miss him, but I'm dying to know who the next Doctor will be.

Kathy - My theory about the John Hurt Doctor is that he is the one who fought the Time War, and the one had to make incredible sacrifices and be the cause of many deaths in order to preserve the Universe. That's what I love about the Doctor - it's that sometimes he has to make hard choices.

Paul - Thank you so much for coming to my thread, even as I struggle with dusting it off. It means so much to me. :)

Donna - I grew up with the film that was based on The Killer Angels, Gettysburg. It was responsible for my brother's obsession with the Civil War and history at a young age, and my awe of Joshua Chamberlain at the age of eight. He's still one of my heroes.

Paws - Right! It's like the way I am with Will Smith, Martin Sheen or other big name actors. When I see them on the screen it's hard for me to see the character by themselves, because I'm so familiar with the actor. A lot of times all I can see is "oh, there's Will Smith!" I hope that made sense. :P

Leah - That kiss between River and the Doctor made me sob like a baby, and I'm not even a huge fan of their relationship. I like it, but I'm a complete Whouffle shipper. :) I think the connection between River and Clara was because they were still in that dream palace thing of Vastra's and the psychic connection between them in that palace wasn't severed. Or something. There could be more to it!

Bluesalamanders - Wah, I'm sorry you feel that way. :( I'm a huge fan of Moffat's work, personally, and I adore what he's done with the concepts of time travel, memory, non-linear storytelling, and complex villains. There's a lot more to his stories then meets the eye, and I love analyzing them.

And hey, when hasn't Doctor Who been weird? :D

Jun 27, 2013, 12:24 pm

Paul - Robert Frost is one of my favorites, too! And why he didn't get a Nobel Prize I cannot fathom. Morons. I saw those books at Barnes & Noble! I'm going to look up some reviews of them to see if they're any good, and then I'll probably get some of them. ^_^

PensiveCat - I hate talking about Matt in the past tense, too. :( He's still the Doctor, and we've still got the 50th Anniversary to look forward to, so he'll definitely leave with a bang.

Kathy - BIRDIE! :D I think that's the key - pictures of birdies will make me stay.

Nora - Ducks, too. :)

For the love of stars, supernovas, and the galaxy entire, don't watch it! I'm not familiar with Peter Capaldi's work, but looking at photos of him, I can see how he could pull off a range of Doctor-like qualities: roguish, charming, mysterious, dead-serious, goofy, emotional... and he fits the bill for an older Doctor as well. Hmmm!

SORRY I HAVE A TURRENT OF FEELS RIGHT NOW!

In case people didn't get the news:

All in all, I'm quite happy! We won't know for certain until the episode he appears in rolls around, but I am happy. He's Scottish and an older Doctor, which I think is great, and I can't wait to see how his relationship with Clara pans out. Yes, I am a Doctor/Clara shipper, but I am a Whovian first, so whatever direction they decide to take I am cool with.

Also, Peter Capaldi seems to be a sassy little snit, so that pleases me greatly.

I think I'm just stuck on him as John Frobisher from Torchwood: Children of Earth. Hopefully all will be well. Doctor Who is ruining my Christmas.

He was also in The Fires of Pompeii! Personally, I think he'll do nicely. I've been going through "The Thick of It" and damn, he can be very intimidating and charismatic at the same time! I'm excited. ^_^

I like an older Doctor - hopefully it'll be a bit more like Classic Who - I've been watching the old stuff and it was great to not have the shippy stuff. Not that they can't put him in a romantic role. What I really like is that he is a Doctor Who fan. That enthusiasm was certainly good for Tennant!

Don't know if you've had time to go to Mark's thread, but David Tennant has a new series that started on Wednesday, called Broadchurch. The first episode is available free at bbcamerica.com for a 'limited' time. (whatever that means)

Tennant is a detective-- slightly dark, mysteriously wounded-but-still-in-control warrior and seeker of justice. Which, as DD pointed out is not a bad description of 10.

I watched the first episode a while ago when it was coming out in England. Didn't mind it. I'll probably have to check the show out further when it comes out on DVD. It's nice to see two Doctor Who actors in the lead roles.

Sorry for not commenting so much here on LibraryThing! I've been mostly focusing on Goodreads, especially with the past week. I learned that one of my friends on Goodreads, a charming, thoughtful, grammar conscious twelve-year-old Whovian named Cat was killed in a car crash. It's rocked the little group I'm a part of there, and all of us are still in shock about it. She was too young to go, and for me to register that this girl - someone who I had fangirled and chatted with - is dead, is still inconceivable.

I've mostly been spending my time hanging out with this group and appreciating each other's company, and supporting each other. You never know when you're going to go, so we're trying to never take each other's company for granted.

Well, that black hole really loves me.

GAAAAAAH! Your comments are so beautiful. Thank you for them, even though I was a non-existent responder. They mean a lot to me.

Happy new year, everyone! I hope things are looking a bit more up this year.

So yeah, here's kinda of an update thing...

I'll get the big thing that really killed a lot of my enthusiasm for internet connecting first thing, though.

Remember that girl who got killed in a car crash? Turns out her "friend" who reported her death was lying, and this girl who was supposed to be dead made a grand reentrance, before leaving. Both the accounts were invented by a liar. This person then went on to troll a bunch of wonderful, sweet, and kind-hearted kids on Goodreads, by having a series (I know of two other accounts and one suspect) of accounts where this person gained their confidence, and then lied and made a huge drama-fest.

Pretty bloody low. It made me feel horrible, because I'd shed tears and grieved over this kid that I'd thought died, and turns out it was all a lie to get attention. So I tried to be there for this group, and we've all gotten past it pretty much.

Didn't know how to explain all this crap a few months ago, but I've gotten over it now. Bah. Reminds you of how the internet can be abused.

So yeah, that was my big internet drain thing! I've also been going through a lot of Horrid Angst Stuffs. I'm eighteen, so I'm technically an adult, whee. But I don't feel like one. And I'm no longer a teenager, really, so what am I? *existential crisis* So angst. :D

Something really beautiful and joyful has entered my life, though. ((Richard, if you're reading this, avert your eyes. I don't want to sully my reputation in your eyes. ;D )) I'm officially converting to Catholicism. I started RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults something or another, I don't speak Acronym) back in September or so, and in four months, at Easter, I will be baptized, confirmed, and have first Eucharist. :') This is something I've strongly desired for over two years, and I am finally doing it!

I've been Agnostic-ish, Deist, New Age-y, and researched a variety of faiths, yet Catholicism has called to me above them all. I know this is the path, I know it in my heart and my head.

Sooooo yeah! Really overjoyed about that. I'm also finally beginning to take courses at the community college this semester! I'm taking English, Art, and American History, so it should be fun. :) When I'm feeling brave I'll get into math. *shudder*

Thank you so much for sticking around and everything! If you read this, you get a pony.

Love you.

I get a pony!

Eris, I'm so sorry to hear about the drama and heartache that person caused. It's selfish and horrid. Unfortunately it can be a common occurrence on the internet, and is one reason I don't let myself get involved in online groups too often. I've seen fake illness, fake death, fake children, fake vacations, fake degrees, you name it. I don't understand it and it's made me pretty cynical. I don't wish that upon you! Our online friends can become as precious to us as real life friends and when they betray us or are lost to us it hurts just as bad. But don't beat yourself up for being duped by it-- pride yourself in your compassion for others, even when it turns out they didn't deserve it. I'm very glad you're okay now. :)

And congrats on the monumental decision to convert! I myself am an atheist (more apathetic agnostic I guess), but I do believe in the value of a community and faith that brings you comfort and well-being. My best wishes to you on your journey.

POOOOOONY!

You're right, and I do see that trolling a lot. I guess it's just strange to see it happen with someone you thought was a neat person, and seemed to be, but there was something off. I don't understand it either, and it did make me cynical. But you're right, the one thing that stopped me were the good online friends, the ones who had proven themselves. For me there is one in particular. Her name is Ellie, and she's one of my closest friends, even though I've never met her in real life. I met her through Goodreads, and if it weren't for her, I would've lost all connection to the internet. She encouraged me to come back here, too, so I definitely owe her one. I owe her a lot, really.

Thank you! Still have quite a long road ahead of me. Aye, my dad is kinda in the apathetic agnostic camp, too. He's been really lovely and supportive, so I am really thankful for that. Without my parents, I wouldn't have been able to do this.

I pray for your journey, too, wherever it leads. *hug*

Eris, I've had that happen to me, too on a horse training message board. The supposed husband came on and said his wife had been killed when a horse fell with her. I think people were even collecting for a memorial fund to help the husband out. It was very saddening and eye-opening.

And -do I dare say this - there's one person here on LT whose story just doesn't hang together. Maybe I'm being cynical, (once burned, twice shy) but it happens everywhere.

Congrats on your big news! Although I'm Protestant, there are some really neat people here on LT who are Catholic. Sometimes I skim posts on the Catholicism group. Have you discovered that group yet?

Dearest Eris,
The whole "adult" thing is a total scam. I'm almost twenty-six and I've never, for one moment, felt like an adult. The important thing is to just keep doing the things that make you feel best about yourself, and to continue to grow into the person you most want to be. (Which I can tell that you are doing! Good for you!) And then one day when you least expect it, you'll realize that you forgot to care about being an adult, because you're too busy being Eris.

Paws - Ditto. Honesty is such an undervalued trait. And we are doing well! I feel a lot better talking about it, too. At first I couldn't even stomach telling my mom, but it's all in the past now. The person is still trying, but the game gets old, and we've all moved on.

Streamsong - Oh wow, that's horrible. D: I guess it happens a lot more often than sincere users like to think about. Learning that more and more. Quite sobering, but I'm happy you guys found out about the loser in the end.

I haven't gone to the Catholicism group yet! I shall have to check that out. I was a part of the Christianity group here for a bit, but I accidentally made an ass of myself a couple of years ago. But I'll give groups another shot, I guess!

Nora - O_O So basically Adulthood is a gigantic lie? My word! Well, I shall try and keep doing what I'm up to now, I guess.

I doubt my own abilities to know what is best for me, though. I have learned that I am quite fallible. Hopefully I shall do what is right despite myself, however, and continue a progression! Even if it's mean I am still a goofy six-year-old fangirl inside. ^_^

I suppose that to truly become a better person, you have to know how to be little. That a little humble path is a path worth taking. There's a lot to learn from children.

And if I talk any longer, I'll be a babbling mess, so I'll close this now.

And probably go and get a 2014 thread.

113norabelle414
Ene 2, 2014, 2:41 pm

Adulthood is real, I think, but if you worry about finding it then you won't ever find it. It's kind of like romantic movies. If you spend all your time thinking/worrying about whether the things in your life add up to this ideal in your head, you'll miss the romantic things all around you.

You are the only person who knows what is best for you - it's whatever makes you feel good about yourself. Catholicism makes you feel good about yourself. Writing makes you feel good about yourself. Being a fangirl and connecting with other fans makes you feel good about yourself. (I know TONS of fangirls/boys who are well into their adult years, and being open and passionate about the things they love doesn't make them any less of an adult!)

Watch this video of two adult fangirls and you will feel better :-)

I've sort of come to the conclusion that when you let your "inner child" out and just do what you want instead of what you think you should do, that's when you've become an adult.
Most adults I know are ridiculously childish - that's what makes life fun.

115leahbird
Ene 2, 2014, 4:55 pm

Don't worry that you don't have answers at 18. I was more adult at certain points in my mid 20s than I am now at 31, but it is different for everyone. Being adult to me is knowing who you are and what you want and that can change. I was sure of that for a while but I became a different person and went back to the drawing board. I'm getting there now, but I'm still muddying through the growing pains a bit. You'll do fine.
