I started putting a post in the combiners group about the mess that the Elfquest graphic novels are and how they needed to be separated, then I realized that the series issue needed to be address first.

There should be at least two different Graphic Novel series for ElfQuest. One is the "ElfQuest Reader's Collection" which is all in black and white and lower quality.

The other should for the Color prints which are of a higher quality. It is for the color printed books I'm running into problems. At some point someone seems to have seperated them into two series: "The Complete Elfquest" and "ElfQuest Graphic Novels"

There is a Disambiguation notice on many of the these which says "This is book # of the Starblaze graphics / Donning Press editions." With a little exploration I believe this is suppose to be for "The Complete Elfquest" series. I haven't been able to figure out a difference between this edition and the Father Tree edition.

It seems to me that the Elfquest graphic Novels should be pared down to two series the black & white one and the color one. Before I waded in to fix things, I want to check with y'all to make sure I'm not missing anything or messing something up.

Not really. The first question should be are they separate works and only if they are then can you then address the question of whether they should be separate series. I posted the following in the Combiners group in response to your question there.

Whether their in black&white or color shouldn't by itself make them separate works. The question should be is the text the same. If the text is the same but the graphics are different (and not just a color difference) then I don't think it's a settled question of whether they should be considered different works.

Yeah, I agree with that. Same text and just color vs b/w on the same art is the same work to me. But since the art is so central to a graphic novel, I'd have to throw my vote into different art making it a different work.

ETA: And I think this fits in with Tim's oft-cited "dinner party" rule. When someone asks you if you've read a certain graphic novel, they're probably going to make a differentiation if the art has been redrawn.

This thread on Combiners about picture books with the same text and different illustrations may be of interest to some people here.

And this is why I asked before I did anything. So, since the essence of the story and art is the same even if the one is much poorer quality they are essentially the same work in this case.

I'll wait a few more days to see if anyone else ways in, but it looks like what I should do is combine all the reprinted b&w volumes with the color volumes and collapse it down to just the one series. I have to double check but I don't think the b&w series changes the order of the original print run.
