Has anyone heard any news reports about a study done on Celestial Seasonings that found high levels of pesticides? I can't seem to find the story, but this is pretty alarming to me since some of their teas are my favorites.

Seriously, you couldn't find the story?

Okay, okay...my apologies for the unnecessary snark. I think I'm just disappointed that Sleepytime is included in this list. I love SleepyTime. Anyone have a suggestion for an alternative?

There's no way to be sure.

Ideally yes, anything that says organic should be free of "harmful" pesticides, but does the company test it's own product, etc? Are organic pesticides like Sevin and Neem really safe?

There's plenty of contamination that can happen from other avenues outside the growing process as well. Is the air quality good? The water? The soil? So there are various shades of the word organic...

And testing is usually for the product itself, not the tea that is made. And again who is going to do the testing? And how often?

There's differing levels of safe exposure. Sure you wouldn't want these products in your body, however like poisoning it is all about the dose...there'll never be a long term study that will define what the low doses of certain chemicals do to our bodies, especially with the interference from the companies on the politicians and the entities that are supposed to monitor these things so...and let's face it, without these god awful chemicals we wouldn't have half the things we do have, food and otherwise. So, I don't know...

But it's scary stuff. I've always worried about Chinese tea. There are enough stories about everything else that how could you expect their teas not to be effected in some way.

The taste of these chemicals will alter the taste of the tea, so any serious company will realize this and take the necessary action. I'd assume they have tasters who can tell.

But you have chloramines in the water, PBDE's in everything in your house and by extension in your body...the genie is out of the bottle, no putting it back in.

Numi looks good though!

There is also a pretty scathing report about Lipton tea
http://www.greenpeace.org/eastasia/news/blog/lipton-tea-laced-with-toxic-pestici...

I also saw one about Teavana it said that they would probably pull theirs from shelves.

I am wondering about a couple brands I get for my Kuerig the Timothy brand Chinese Vert Green Tea it is made in Canada so I ordered the report from the link in message #2.

Most don't list the chinese name of the tea I wish I could find a more comprehensive list of exactly which brands I should avoid. I'm still searching will let folks here know if I find one.

#7 Sevin is organic? Didn't realize that--it's toxic as all get-out to Japanese beetles. In fact, it's the only thing that'll wipe them out. But imo, if something's organic but can kill insects that easily, isn't it still poison?

There seems to be some concern that the pesticide report on Celestial Seasonings may be overblown or false; apparently it was created by a company that had an interest in short-selling Celestial's stock. I will try to post a link to a blog that had a lot of links to the various reports from both sides.

and another to the Glaucus Research site:

Just for information purposes, I'm not sure which reports are accurate--I'm too tired to figure this out. And I only drink CS's Nutcracker Sweet tea when I can find it--their herbal stuff isn't tea.
