read aloud vs. silently

I really think that David Sedaris' work should be read aloud for the ultimate effect. I've read his books and they are wonderful, but the story I loved the most was from 'Me Talk Pretty' when it was read aloud at an open-mike night.

I agree 100%, some of the nuances are lost on the page. I received the David Sedaris Box Set for Christmas last year and it is a great way to hear David and Amy tell the stories themselves.

My ex-husband would read him to me at bedtime. It was great. Something about a human voice with those human experiences just does it for me.

I've only briefly heard David Sedaris reading his essays, and I've read all of his books silently. Maybe I'll have to get an audience so I can read them aloud and see what the hubub is about.

I first got into Sedaris by reading Barrel Fever aloud in my Theory of Comedy class in college. I always find him much funnier that way.

Aloud is the way to go, most definitely. His live recordings are great as well. They are much better than the study versions as he interacts a bit with the audience. Great stuff.
